미군정기 남한과 일본의 문학으로서의 탈식민화 1945~1948 —『문학』과 『민주조선』의 두 사례 (Munhak and Minshu Chōsen :Decolonization through Literature in US Military Occupied Southern Korea and Japan, 1945-1948)

초록

미국 육군 24군단은 1945년 9월 8일에 인천에 상륙해 익일인 9일 서울에 들어가 일본제국군의 항복을 공식적으로 받은 것으로 남한에서의 미군정은 시작되었다. 일본 제국으로부터 ‘해방’된 남한은 이렇게 다시 점령되었으며, 미군은 일본의 식민통치기구인 조선총독부를 미육군사령부 군정청으로 명칭을 변경하였다. ‘국민국가 패러다임’의 관점에서 보면 1945년 8일 15일이란 날짜가 ‘조선’(Korea)을 일본에서 뚜렷이 분리시키는데, 실상 일본의 미군(표면상으로만 연합군)에 의한 점령을 고려하면 일본과 남한을 지배하는 세력이 똑같았으며 연결되는 부분이 많았다고 할 수 있다. 게다가 재일 조선인의 경험을 살펴보면 남한에 거주하는 사람과 비슷한 점이 적지 않았다. 나아가 남한에서의 탈식민화 과정과 마찬가지로 미점령군의 지배하에 놓여 있었던 일본인이 하고자 했던 ‘탈제국화’의 과정 또한 저지되었다.
미군정이 물질적으로 주둔한 것처럼 담론적으로도 탈식민화에 대한 저지 및 식민지 시대와의 연속성이 드러난다. 본론에서는 조선문학가동맹의 기관지인 『문학』과 재일조선인이 출판한 잡지인 『민주조선』을 분석함으로써 일본제국의 분열 이후 남한과 일본에서의 탈식민/제국화의 과정과 그 과정에 대한 미군정의 방해를 살펴보고자 한다. 구체적으로 말하자면 이 두 잡지에 실린 문학작품과 논문에서 드러나는 탈식민/제국화의 과정에 대한 묘사를 분석하고 그 묘사와 미군정기 당시의 검열과 같은 통치 제도와 관계를 탐색하면서, 남한과 일본 사이의 연결성 또는 식민지와 미군정기에 대한 연속성에 대해서 생각하려고 한다.

영어초록

On September 8, 1945 the 24th corps of the US Tenth Army landed in Incheon and established the United States Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK) upon arriving in Seoul the following day. Southern Korea, which had been “liberated” from Imperial Japan only a few weeks earlier, once again became an occupied country—this time at the hands of the US Military which headquartered its administration in the same building as the government-general of colonial Korea and made use of many of the colonial institutions put in place by the Japanese colonial government. When looked at through the lens of the “nation-state paradigm,” the date of August 15, 1945 marks the complete separation of Korea(Chosŭn) from Japan. Taking into consideration the contemporaneous US Military occupation of Japan (only an occupation by the Allied Powers on the most superficial of levels), however, reveals that both southern Korea and Japan were occupied under the same military organization with many connections remaining between the two. Further, there are numerous parallels between the experiences of Koreans who remained in Japan and those in the southern half of the Korean peninsula, and, similar to the decolonization process in southern Korea, the “deimperialization” process of Japan was also obstructed.
The way in which the physical presence of the US Military occupation demonstrates the obstruction of decolonization and continuity with the colonial period is mirrored in the discursive realm. Through analyzing Munhak, the official publication of the Korean Writer’s Alliance, and Minju Chosŭn, a magazine published by Koreans in Japan, I will examine the processes of decolonization /deimperialization in southern Korean and Japan and how they were affected by the US Military occupation. Specifically, through looking at how literary works and articles published in these two magazines represent the processes of decolonization /deimperialization and how these representations were affected by censorship and systems of control, I will attempt to address the issues of post-imperial connections between Japan and southern Korea and the continuity between colonial Korea and postwar southern Korea occupied by the US Military.
