초록

이 연구는 불교가 처음 알려지기 시작하던 시기 두 명의 독일 문헌학자를 분석대상으로 삼아 그들의 불교이해를 살피고자 했다. 이 글에서 다룬 불교학자들은 팔리어 경전을 토대로 붓다의 가르침을 이해하는데 평생을 바친 연구자들이었다. 그들은 초기경전에 기록된 붓다의 가르침을 밝힘으로써 불교의 원래 모습을 밝힐 수 있다고 믿고 있었다. 이런 그들의 불교를 대하는 태도가 가진 진정성을 의심할 수는 없다. 그러나 이들이 불교를 접한 초기 단계 유럽 연구자였기에 그들의 불교이해에 있어 일정 정도 한계를 드러내고 있었으리라 추측하는 것은 결코 어려운 일이 아니다.
그리고 이때 이들 서구 지식인들이 낯선 동양종교를 접하면서 다양한 형태의 서구적 우월의식을 내세웠을 가능성을 거론할 수 있다. 그러나 이 글에서 다룬 문헌학자들의 경우 이들의 불교에 대한 인식을 단순히 오리엔탈리즘이라 명명된 하나의 담론, 포괄적인 언설의 작동이란 차원으로 이해하는 것이 제한적인 의미를 가질 따름이라는 점 역시 명백하다. 왜냐하면 독일의 불교문헌학이 다른 식민제국의 경우와는 달리 학술적 동기에서 시작되었으며, 또 이들 독일 불교문헌학자들이 불교에 대한 진지한 이해와 긍정적 인식을 도출해 내는 모습을 보이고 있었기 때문이다.
그러나 그들의 불교 이해가 새롭게 접하게 된 한 동양종교에 대한 깊이 있는 이해로 나아가기에는 아직은 이른 상태였다는 점은 비교적 명백하다. 당시 불교문헌의 소개는 미흡한 상태였고, 특히 아시아 전역으로 전파된 불교의 발전사는 잘 알려져 있지 않고 있었다. 그와 같은 상황에서 그들의 불교이해가 제한적 수준을 넘지 못했으며, 따라서 그들의 불교이해가 불교 그 자체에 대한 이해를 지향하면서도 자신들의 “관심, 이해, 아젠다를 반영”하는 모습을 보이고 있었던 것은 명백하다.
이런 모습은 올덴베르크의 경우 붓다의 가르침을 높이 평가하면서도, 그것을 인도의 고대사와 그 문명적 발전에 대한 관심과 연결시켜 파악하는 형태로 나타났다. 아울러 그는 기독교 역사와 비교 속에서 불교에 의미를 부여하는 모습을 보이기도 했다. 노이만 역시도 불교인식을 자신의 종교적 문제의식과 결부시키는 모습을 보이고 있었다. 그는 불교의 의미를 자신의 종교적이고 철학적인 문제의식 그리고 그를 잘 표현하고 있는 서구 중세의 기독교 신비주의자와 쇼펜하우어의 철학과 연관시키면서 파악하고자 했다. 그리고 이런 차원에서 불교 이해를 지향하고 있었기 때문에 그들이 이해하는 불교는 특정한 형태를 띨 수밖에 없었다. 그것은 바로 불교를 역사적 종교가 아니라 붓다의 교리 그 자체와 일치시키는 것이었다. 그러나 이는 역으로 그들로 하여금 세계종교로 발전한 불교에 대한 이해를 가로막고 있었다는 점은 부인할 수 없을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper sets out its aim to explore the way of engagement of the West with the Buddhist tradition, with an emphasis on the early period of the encounter and those initial imaginative constructions and early discourses. In that period, it is not easy for Europeans, to understand the Buddhist doctrine and its religious tradition of its own. So, for the first part of the 19th century, they thought that the Buddha was no, in any modern sense of the term, a historical figure; rather he was one aspect of a complex comparative mythology and chronology, a semi-divine being. The Buddha was vaguely conceived of as a mythic god in the Indian pantheon.
But in later part of the 19th century, Europe has witnessed a boom of translations, studies, and portrayals. These paved the way for an enhanced knowledge of and interest in Buddha as a historic person and in his doctrines. France, England, and Germany had been the countries foremost in studying Buddhism. This paper focuses on two German Buddhist philologists, Heramnn Oldenberg and Karl Eugen Neumann. Focusing on these two philologists, this paper aimed to explore nineteenth-century European scholarship and its historic-critical approach, trying to reveal their motifs of the studies and their imagination of Buddism. Why did they have any interest in these obscure Asian texts? What kind of factors played a role in their imagination of Buddhism? First of all, the career of Hermann Oldenberg was indicative of the arrival of Buddhist studies within the academic establishment. Oldenberg trained in Berlin and published a popular work entitled The Buddha, His Life, His Doctrine, His Community (1881). He served as professor at Kiel from 1898 to 1908 and from then on at Göttingen. Another philologist, Karl Eugen Neumann, was one of the most widely read translators of Buddhist texts. He first became interested in Buddhism at the age of nineteen after reading Schopenhauer’s philosophical work. Although he never found a university post in India or Europe, he translated and published ten books on Buddhism.
Theses scholars were full of enthusiasm about Buddhism. They studied Buddhism and provided translations which non-academics considered eloquent and which increased the exposure of Buddhism in Germany. Their work provided an introduction to the life of the Buddha, the four Noble Truths, Nirvana and the Sangha. But these academic Indologists were interested only in Buddhism as it had existed millennia ago. Their books on the Buddha referred to the historical Buddha and texts from the early period of Buddhism, but not to modern Buddhist movements in Asia, because they sought to explore the pure Pali-Buddhism. Namely, these scholars studied primarily pali-Buddhist canons to acquire the old and true teachings of the Buddha.
But it is at the same time an undeniable fact that there was a limit in their perceptions of Buddhism. Although European scholars were trying to sort out its details in Buddhism, these early researchers have particularly difficulty in understanding Buddhism of its own. While there work were linguistically and aesthetically refined, from today’s vantage point it appears to be so full of Christian terminology and interpretations – as well as of Schopenhauerian pessimism – that it has contributed to perpetuating a one-sided, reductive view of the teaching of the Buddha that is embraced even by many Buddhists today. It is not surprising that Buddhism in the early period of the introduction to Europe has been represented in the Western imagination in a manner that reflects specifically Western concerns, interests, and aspirations.
