두 번의 연행, 일곱 편의 조사 자료 - 1936년 봉산탈춤 연행 조사 자료 연구 - (Twice Performances, Seven Research Materials －A Study on Research Materials on the 1936 Bongsan Mask Dance - Drama Performance－)

초록

본 연구는 1936년 8월 31일 사리원 경암산 아래 광장에서 벌어진 봉산탈춤에 대한 조사 자료를 대상으로 한다. 이때의 봉산탈춤 연행은 많은 관심을 불러일으켰고, 그 관심만큼 여러 조사 자료들이 산출되었다. 필자는 바로 이 조사 자료들에 주목한다. 1936년 봉산탈춤 연행과 관련된 조사 자료들에 대한 섬세한 검토를 수행하려는 것이다. 관련 조사 자료들의 특징과 관계가 본 연구를 통해 정리될 수 있을 것이라 필자는 기대하고 있다. 논의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
1936년 사리원에서의 봉산탈춤 연행과 관련된 조사 자료들은 총 여덟 편이다. 이 조사 자료들은 크게 참여 관찰기와 채록 자료로 대별할 수 있다. 참여 관찰기로는 무라야마 지쥰의 참여 관찰기와 스텐 베리만의 참여 관찰기가 있다. 이 두 참여 관찰기 사이에 영향 관계는 전혀 없다. 채록 자료로는 오청 채록본, 오청 일어번역본, 구자균 필사본, 송석하 채록본, 최상수 채록본, 임석재 채록본 등이 있다. 그런데 오청 일어번역본, 구자균 필사본, 송석하 채록본, 최상수 채록본 등은 오청 채록본을 바탕으로 번역․필사․전재 등을 한 2차 가공 자료들인 것이다. 따라서 채록 자료들은 크게 오청 채록본 계열과 임석재 채록본으로 나누어져 있다고 할 수 있다. 사실상 채록 자료는 오청 채록본과 임석재 채록본으로 대별되는 것이다.
이러한 본 연구의 결과는 또 다른 연구 과제들을 제기한다. ‘오청 채록본과 임석재 채록본의 섬세한 비교 연구’, ‘참여 관찰기의 비교 연구’, ‘봉산 구읍 연희자들 주도의 봉산탈춤 존재 연구’ 등이 그것이다. 이 연구들은 본 연구의 과정에서 산출된 것이며, 동시에 문화 정치학적 논의와 깊게 연관되는 것이다. 이렇게 1936년 봉산탈춤 연행에 대한 조사 자료의 특징과 관계 정리라는 본 연구의 일차적 목적 달성을 기반으로 하여, 여러 연구 과제들이 생성되었다. 어쩌면 본 연구의 본래 목적이 여기에 있었다고 할 수도 있다. 연속되거나 새롭게 떠오르는 과제들을 본격적으로 연구하기 위한 사전 연구로 본 연구가 자리 잡은 것이다.

영어초록

The subject of this study is the research materials of the Bongsan mask dance-drama that took place on August 31, 1936, in the plaza beneath Mt. Gyeongam in Sariwon. That performance drew a lot of interest. As a result of this interest, a number of research materials were produced. I pay attention to those research materials, which were reviewed delicately. The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics of and relationships among those research materials. To sum up, the results are as follows.
There were a total eight research materials related to the 1936 Bongsan mask dance-drama performance at Sariwon. Those materials can be broadly divided into participatory observation diaries and oral records. In the category of participatory observation diary, there are the participatory observation diaries of Jijyun Murayama and that of Stern Bergman. No effects of the relationship between the two participatory observation diaries were found. As for the oral record materials, there are Cheong Oh’s oral records, Cheong Oh’s Japanese translation version, Ja-gyun Gu’s transcript, Seok-ha Song’s oral records, Sang-su Choe’s oral records and Seok-jae Im’s oral records. It should be noted that Cheong Oh’s Japanese translation version, Ja-gyun Gu’s transcript, Seok-ha Song’s oral records, and Sang-su Choe’s oral records are secondary processing materials which were transcribed, translated, and reprinted based on Cheong Oh’s oral records. Therefore, the oral record materials related to the 1936 Bongsan mask dance-drama performance are divided into the oral records of Cheong Oh and the oral records of Seok-jae Im. In fact, the oral records are mainly divided into those of Cheong Oh and Seok-jae Im.
These study results have led to the initiation of other studies. Those are “A comparative study of the oral records of Cheong Oh and Seok-jae Im,” “A comparative study of participatory observation diaries,” “A study of the Bongsan mask dance-drama that is led by performers in the old town of Bongsan.” The studies have been produced in the process of this study, and they are connected with cultural politics discussion. Based on primary purpose of this study, which is the arrangement of the characteristics of and relationships among research materials of the Bongsan mask dance-drama that took place on August 31, 1936, in the plaza beneath Mt. Gyeongam in Sariwon, various research projects have been created. Maybe, the original purpose of this study may be said here. This study was established in a prior study to study the emerging study assignments in earnest.
