백철의 전통론과 신비평 : 두 비평적 관점의 관련성 연구 (Study on the relationship between Back Chol’s Korean traditional criticism and New criticism)

본 논문의 목표는 첫째, 백철의 전통론이 신비평 수용과 어떤 관련을 맺는지 살펴보는 것이다. 특히 백철이 1954년 『문학개론』에서 가장 유능한비평이라고 언급했던 ‘평가평단’의 비평방식에 대한 선호는 신비평의 분석비평의 도입 후에도 변함이 없는데, 이 ‘평가평단’의 비평방식에 대한 선호가 그의 전통론과 어떤 관련을 보이는지 살펴보겠다.
둘째는 백철이 1959년에 번역한 르네 웰렉과 오스틴 워렌의 『문학의 이론』을 중심으로 그 전과 후에 백철의 문학관에 어떤 변화가 있었는지 확인하는 것이다. 특히 내용과 형식에 대한 입장의 변화에 대해서 알아보도록하겠다.
셋째는 백철이 분석적 비평방법의 도입을 주장하면서 비판했던 우리 전통문학 비평방식의 문제점을 정리하고, 그에 대해 반론을 제기 하는 것이다.
위의 목표를 위해 본고는 백철이 1954년에 출판한 『문학개론』과 1959년에 번역한 르네 웰렉과 오스틴 워렌의 『문학의 이론』, 그리고 1961년에 개정 출판한 『문학개론』, 그리고 백철의 전통론관련 논문들을 연구 대상으로 삼는다.

영어초록

Back Chol(1908~1985) introduced New criticism to Korea and he translated Rene Wellek and Austin Warren’s The Theory of Literature in 1959. He generally wrote critical essays about Korean modern literature. But he sometimes wrote articles about Korean premodern literature and premodern criticism. And Back Chol wrote three kinds of The Introduction of Literature during his whole life.
In this report, I will handle two kinds of The Introduction of Literature. And they were published in 1954 and 1961 respectively. Between these books, Back Chol translated Rene Wellek and Austin Warren’s The Theory of Literature in 1959.
The purpose of this thesis can be devided into three. First, I will check if there are any change in Back Chol’s attitude toward literature after the translation of Rene Wellek and Austin Warren’s The Theory of Literature in 1959. To do this, I will compare major contents of two versions of The Introduction of Literature which Back Chol published in 1954 and 1961. Second, when Back Chol introduced ‘analytic approach’ of New criticism, he criticized the Korean traditional criticism as a ‘dilettante’ or an amateur’s. I will try to argue about that. Third, even though Back Chol criticized the Korean traditional criticism as an amateur’s,his actual critical attitude was on the verge of Korean traditional literary concept.
I can find this kind of tendency in both The Introduction of Literature. Especially,it is more obvious when he showed a strong preference for a critical attitude which he called “evaluation and judgement”. I will discuss the relationship between the critical attitude of “evaluation and judgement” and Korean traditional literary criticism. We can find his preference for the critical attitude of “evaluation and judgement” in both The Introduction of Literature. And it means his critical preference was not affected by the Analytic approach of New criticism. I will argue this through comparing these two books and analyzing his articles about Korean premodern literature during this period.
