귀환재러한인 전직의료인 생애사 연구* - 두 전직 간호사의 생애사 - (Life History Research on Former Medical Professionals among Ethnic Return Migrants from Russia - The Life Histories of Two Retired Nurses -)

초록

이 연구는 영주귀국 사할린 한인 전직 간호사들의 생애사를 통해 이들의 사회주의 의료체제 내에서의 교육과 직업경험을 재구성하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 이를 통해 재러한인들의 근대적 직업경험을 내부자적 입장에서 이해하고 재외한인 간호사의 경험의 지평을 확장하고자 하였다. 먼저, 재외한인 간호사 연구를 검토하여 재러한인 간호사에 대한 연구가 이루어지지 않고 있음을 지적하였다. 이어, 소련의 의료제도 및 소련 간호의 역사를 개관하여 생애사가 서술되고 해석되는 맥락을 제시하였다. 또 우리에게 익숙하지 않은직업경험을 연구하기 위한 방법으로 생애사를 채택하였다는 것을 논의하였다. 그리고 연구참여자들의 생애사를 의료전문학교 입학 전, 의료전문학교에서의훈련, 그리고 간호사로서의 직업경험 등 세 부분으로 나누어 서술하였다. 연구참여자들은 강제징용으로 사할린에 와서 힘든 삶을 사는 부모들을 도와주겠다는 동기를 가지고 의료전문학교에 진학할 것을 결심하였다. 간호학생들의 의학 교육은모두 의사가 하였으며 학업성적이 우수한 학생들은 의과대학에 진학할 수 있었다. 연구참여자들은 모두 의료전문학교를 마친 후 곧바로 간호사로 일을 하였는데, 병원에서 일을 하게 된 연구참여자는 직무교육을 통해 여러 전문간호사 자격증을 받았고 소련의 1차 의료기관의 간호사가 된 연구참여자는 진료소에서의 간호는 물론 방문 간호를 통해 지역사회 보건 업무도 담당하였다. 재러한인 전문직업인의 생애사는 그동안 한국 민족국가의 역사가 투영되어 전형화되었던 재러한인들, 특히 사할린 한인들이 가진 근대성을 보여준다. 또한 이는 사회주의 체제에서의 내부자로서의 경험을 한인의 관점에서 서술한다는 의미도 가지고 있다. 본 연구는 탐색적 연구이다. 본격적인 연구를 위해 다른 지역의 재러한인과 다른분야의 의료전문인을 대상으로 연구를 확대할 필요성이 있다

This study examines the life histories of two former ethnic Korean nurses who had worked in the former Soviet Union and Russia and then returned to Korea from Sakhalin Island after their retirement, to reconstruct their educational and occupational experiences in a socialist medical system. It is an attempt to understand the modern professional experiences of ethnic Koreans in Russia from an insider’s perspective and to incorporate their occupational experiences into those of overseas Korean nurses.
For this purpose I first review the existing literature on overseas Korean nurses to point to the lack of study about Korean nurses in the former Soviet Union and Russia. Then I brief the medical system and history of nursing in the former USSR to provide context to the life histories told, and discuss the relevance of the life history method to study occupational experiences in foreign systems.
The life histories of the participants are presented in three phases: before admission into middle medical school, training at the school and the occupational experiences as nurses. In the first phase, the participants decided to become a nurse to ease the burden of their parents who had endured harsh lives coming to Sakhalin Island as conscripted labourers.
Teaching medical subjects was dominated by medical doctors and graduates with high grades were able to advance to medical school to become physicians. Both participants began working as nurses immediately upon graduation, which is covered in the third phase. One participant worked at a special hospital and became a qualified professional in multiple disciplines through on-the-job training. The other participant, employed by a local primary care institution called polyclinic, not only worked as a clinic nurse but also a visiting nurse responsible for the public health of locals.
The professional life histories of Koreans in Russia, especially in Sakhalin Island, are significant in that they reveal modernity in this population that was often hidden due to Koreans projecting the nation’s history onto and typifying them according to their perceptions. The life histories are also meaningful in that they narrate the experiences in a socialist medical system from an insider’s perspective.
This study is an exploratory investigation. For further study on a full scale, there is the need for more participants including Korean medical professionals in other parts of Russia and in other areas of the profession.
