아트리뷰 파워 미술인 100인을 통해 본 동시대 미술 지형 (The Topology of Contemporary Art through 100 Art Review Power Artists)

초록

본 논문은 2014년부터 2023년까지 최근 10년 간 아트리뷰(ArtReview)가 선정한 세계 미술계의 파워 미술인 100인 현황 분석을 통해 동시대 미술 경향과 지형을 파악하는 데 목적이 있다. 영국의 권위 있는 미술 전문 매체인 아트리뷰는 2003년부터 영향력 있는 미술계 인사들을 발표하는 ‘파워 100인’을 매년 12월 공개하고 있으며 개인전, 전시 기획 등 한 해의 활동 상황 등을 반영해서 순위가 매겨지고 있다. 이에 본 논문은 동시대 미술의 경향을 알고 지형을 분석하기 위해 2014년부터 2023년까지 최근 10년 간 아트리뷰 파워 미술인 100인 현황 중 상위 10위에 오른 명단 총 100인을 추출해서 분석해보았다. 그 결과 직업군의 비율을 보면 작가, 갤러리스트, 미술관 관장, 학자 및 사상가, 기획자 순이었다. 즉 작가가 가장 높은 수치를 보였으며, 작가 군 중에서는 여성, 유색 인종의 비율이 높았다. 즉 서구 중심의 미술계에서 그동안 타자였던 비서구권 및 여성으로의 이동이 최근 몇 년 새 두드러짐을 알 수 있었다. 갤러리스트의 비율이 높은 것과 관련해서 비엔날레 등 전위적인 미술 전시라는 담론의 영역보다 미술시장이 보다 강세를 보임을 알 수 있었다. 이외에 미술의 영역에서 학자와 사상가가 4위를 차지하면서 미술계 영역의 다학제적인 성향과 탈경계, 유연함을 보여줬다. 또한 이들 사상가 중에서는 생태와 환경에 대한 담론을 다루는 이들이 대거 포진되면서 동시대 미술의 영역에서 생태주의의 부상을 반영하고 있었다. 아트리뷰 파워 100인의 명단을 분석 도구로 삼아 현재 진행형인 동시대 미술의 지형을 가늠한 결과 미술과 사회, 환경, 정치 등 전 영역들이 상호작용하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of contemporary art trends and topography through an analysis of the current status of 100 ArtReview-powered artists over the past ten years from 2014 to 2023. Since 2003, the British media ArtReview has released their Power 100 People list, which announces influential art figures. This appears every December with the rankings reflecting the activities of the year, including individual exhibitions and exhibition planning. In order to understand the trends in contemporary art and to analyze the topography, this paper extracted and analyzed a total of 100 people who were ranked in the top ten among the Power 100 ArtReview artists over the last ten years from 2014 to 2023. It was found that the order in terms of proportion was as follows: occupational groups, artists, gallerists, museum directors, scholars, thinkers, and finally curators. In other words, artists were most prevalent on the list, and among artists, many were women and people of color. In other words, the findings here showed that the movement from the western-centered art world to non-western artists and female artists, thus far considered ‘the others’, has been remarkable in recent years. The high proportion of gallerists suggests that the art market is stronger than the discourse area of avant-garde art exhibitions, such as the Biennale. In addition, scholars and thinkers ranked fourth in the field of art according to this list, showing the multidisciplinary tendencies, the de-boundary facet, and the flexibility of the art world. In addition, among these thinkers, a large number of people engaged in the discourse on ecology and the environment were present, reflecting the rise of ecological thought in the field of contemporary art. Using the Power 100 ArtReview list as an analysis tool to gauge the topography of contemporary art, which is always in flux, it was found that all areas, such as art, society, the environment, and politics, interact and ask questions that promote positive changes in society through the medium of art in the present era. This paper is expected to serve as a type of database for the theoreticalization and systematization of contemporary art by allowing readers to grasp the trends and topography of contemporary art using ArtReview's ‘Power 100’ list as the subject of the analysis.
