천안 두정동 유적 출토 이형철기의 성격 -백제의 초기갑주 양상 검토 (On the Features of the Iron Object Excavated at the Archaeological Site in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan - A Review of the Baekje’s armor -)

초록

삼국시대 갑주는 해방 이후 많은 유적조사를 통해서 다양한 종류가 출토되었다. 그렇지만 갑주가출토된 유적은 신라와 가야 고분이 대부분을 차지한다. 이처럼 갑주의 분포가 영남지방에 집중되었지만 이러한 현상을 두고 당대의 사실이 그대로 반영된 것으로 보기 어렵다. 백제는 삼국사기 기록에 의하면 당나라에 갑옷을 보낼 정도로 우수한 제작기술을 갖춘 갑옷이 있다고 되어 있다. 그렇기에 백제가 신라와 가야보다 출토량이 적은 현상은 당시 매장 의례의 풍습과 연관이 있을 것이다.
그러나 백제 지역에서 출토된 갑주는 신라와 가야 지역과 비교하여 출토량과 다양성이 적어 당시백제 갑주의 모습을 적극적으로 추정하는 데 어려움이 많다. 이러한 여건에도 백제 갑주의 양상을 전체적으로 파악하고자 한 연구가 있어서 그 흐름의 대강을 이해할 수 있다. 하지만 백제에서 철제갑주가 본격적으로 제작된 시기인 4세기대는 여전히 자료가 부족하고 자세한 분석도 많지 않다.
그런데 이와 관련하여 천안 두정동 유적에서 출토된 한 점의 이형철기가 주목된다. 세장방형 형태를 띤 이 철기는 Ⅰ지구 4호 주거지에서 출토되었다. 본고는 이 유물의 형태 등 세부적인 특징을 검토하고 영남지방과 일본열도에서 출토된 자료를 비교함과 동시에 주거지에서 갑옷 자료가 확인되는 백제 지역의 특징적 양상을 고려해 보면 이 철기는 갑옷으로 볼 수 있다고 판단하였다.
이번 연구로 두정동 유적 출토 이형철기가 가지는 역사적 함의는 다음과 같다. 이 철기편은 4세기대 백제 갑옷으로 그 형식은 판갑으로 볼 수 있다. 주변에 확인된 판갑 자료를 비교하면 신라와 가야에서는 종장판갑으로 불리고 일본열도에는 수신판혁철판갑으로 보이는자료이다. 이 자료는 현재까지 그 양상을 정확하게 알 수 없는 4세기대 백제 갑옷 자료로 중요하며 당시 백제와 왜의 기술 교류를 보여주는 자료로도 그 가치가 매우 높다.
이러한 자료 외에도 백제 지역 출토 갑주는 그 수량이 적지만 면밀하게 검토되어야 할 자료가 적지 않다. 특히 주목할 연구 대상은 최근 자료가 증가하는 서남해안과 중부내륙의 찰갑과 대금식 갑주를 들 수 있다. 이 연구를 기초로 백제 갑주 연구가 활성화되길 기대한다.

영어초록

A variety of suits of armor from the Three Kingdoms Period has been discovered during archaeological excavations conducted in the years since Korea’s liberation in 1945. The great majority of those unearthed to date were discovered in and around Silla and Gaya tombs scattered across the present-day Yeongnam region. One cannot conclude, however, that such discoveries provide an accurate picture of the situation of the period given that, according to the records in The History of the Three Kingdoms(Samguk sagi), the manufacturers of armor in Baekje consistently maintained high standards of workmanship, producing high-quality products that were even exported to Tang dynasty. The fact that considerably fewer pieces of Baekje armor than Silla and Gaya armor have been excavated so far might be connected with burial practices.
This lack of Baekje armor, compared with Silla and Gaya, has been a major obstacle for archaeologists seeking a clearer, more complete picture of the suits of armor made in Baekje. Despite this difficulty, researchers have made efforts to gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject, resulting in the collection of basic yet valuable information on such artifacts. Unfortunately, however, researchers have had to cope with a serious lack of sources for studies on the fourth century, the period in which Baekje produced metal suits of armor on a large scale.
It is in this context that an iron object recently excavated at the archaeological site in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan has attracted a great deal of attention among researchers.
This long, rectangular object was unearthed at Dwelling 4 of Zone 1 of the site. In this study, the features of the object were compared with those of similar items excavated in the Yeongnam area and the Japanese Archipelago, leading to the conclusion that it was originally a part of a suit of armor worn by a warrior of the Baekje kingdom. This conclusion can be corroborated by the fact that pieces of Baekje armor have been found at Baekje dwelling sites.
This metal artifact is historically significant in that it is a part of a suit of plate armor dating back to fourth-century Baekje. A comparison between this object and other similar items shows that it is a part of a piece of armor that was called a “jongjang pangap” (“vertical plate armor”) in Silla and Gaya and a “tatehagi-ita kawa-toji tanko” (“short suit of armor consisting of vertical plates bound together with leather thongs”) in Japan. That is why this metal object should be regarded as valuable source material that will increase our knowledge about Baekje armor in the fourth century, which has been rarely studied due to a lack of archaeological evidence, and technological exchanges between Baekje and Japan in the early phase of their history.
Apart from this object, other important discoveries of suits of Baekje armor have been made recently, although limited in number. Of the latest excavations, the scale armor and “girdle-style armor” discovered along the southwestern coast and in the middle inland region of Korea are regarded as particularly important. This study is expected to contribute to the ongoing efforts to promote studies on Baekje armor
