탈근대 동아시아식 체제모델 − 역내 담론지형을 중심으로 − (Postmodern East Asian System Model - Focused on Discourse Configuration Within the Region)

제2차 세계대전 이후 제3세계권의 지역 가운데 ‘동아시아’만이 정치경제적 팽창을 거듭하면서 서구학계에서는 (동)아시아의 성장을 해명하려는 학술적 조류가 1980년대부터 가시화되었다. 더하여 20세기 말 사회주의권의 몰락에도 불구하고 중국이 ‘미국 헤게모니’를 위협할 정도로 국제적인 역량과 위상이 커지자, 2000년을 전후로 구미 중심적 세계사를 총체적으로 재검토, 교정하고 동아시아 성장의 원인을 해독해내려는 시도가 미국의 ‘캘리포니아학파(California School)’를 중심으로 수행되었다. 이러한 동아시아에 관한 역외(서구ㆍ타자)적 의미부여는 역내 지식인들과의 적극적인 상승작용을 통해 다양한 방식으로 ‘동아시아식 체제모델’을 실체화하려는 움직임들로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 역내 체제담론의 동학(the dynamics)을 주시하면서 탈근대적인 ‘동아시아식 체제모델’을 구체화해보고자 했다. 먼저 세계체제론상 ‘유럽(서구)적 보편주의’의 망령타파와 주체적 시각의 모색이라는 차원에서 근대 서구모델과 그 확산주의(diffusionism)를 비판적으로 검토했다. 그리고 캘리포니아학파, 일본학계의 이론들을 분석해 ‘동아시아모델(동아시아발전경로)’의 실상과 부상과정을 점검해보았다. 또한 그와 연동해서 동아시아와 문명의 의미장이 교차하는 공동번영과 평화협력의 지역체제 다이멘션(Dimension), 즉 ‘21세기형 동아시아 체제모델’ 구상을 한국과 중국의 담론지형에서 포착, 전망해보고자 했다. 요컨대 본고에서 제안하는 대안적 지역체제는 인류의 ‘공유적 보편성’이 수범垂範하는 동서양 두 체제의 혼성화(hybridization)를 승인하면서 동아시아의 전통적 자산과 비전을 간직한 혁신적인 ‘문명시스템(civilization system)’이다.

영어초록

‘East Asia’ was the only region in the Third World that repeated political and economic expansion after the Second World War. In the Western academic world, there was an academic trend to explain growth of (East) Asia since 1980s. In addition, as the global positioning of China has enlarged so much to threaten the ‘American hegemony’ despite the collapse of socialism in the late 20th century, ‘California School’ of the United States attempted to review and correct the world history that was originally centered on the United States and Europe and to interpret the cause of growth of East Asia around 2000. Such external (Western, other) signification of East Asia resulted in movements to embody the ‘East Asian system model’ in various ways by creating active synergy with intellectuals within the region. This study aimed to materialize the postmodern ‘East Asian system model’ while paying attention to the dynamics of system discourse within the region. First, the modern Western model and its diffusionism were reviewed critically from the perspectives of overthrowing ‘European (Western) universalism’ in the world system theory and seeking an independent viewpoint. The reality and rising process of the ‘East Asian model (development path)’ were inspected by analyzing theories of California School and the academic world of Japan. In addition, this study tried to capture and forecast the ‘21st century East Asian system model,’ which is the regional system dimension of prosperity and peaceful cooperation where the semantic fields of East Asia and civilization cross, based on discourse configuration of Korea and China. In short, the alternative regional system proposed in this paper is an innovative ‘civilization system’ that cherishes traditional assets and visions of East Asia while approving hybridization of the Eastern and Western systems exemplified by ‘shared universality’ of the humankind.
