신라 기호문토기 고찰 - 경주 노동동 12번지 유적을 중심으로 - (A Consideration on Silla Potteries with Symbol Inscription - Focusing on the historic site in Gyeongju Nodong - dong 12 -)

초록

경주 노동동 12번지 유적에서 출토된 133점의 기호문토기를 시문형태에 따라 세 가지 유형으로 분류해 본 결과 날카로운 도구로 깊게 새긴 형태의 기호문이 103점(77%)이며, 토기의 기종은 단각고배(50점)와 뚜껑(24점)이 많다. 기호 가운데에는 ‘⌗’(33점)이 가장 많으며, ‘山’字와 유사한 유형의 기호와 특정 기종을 중심으로 시문된 기호가 출토되었다. 따라서 이러한 기호의 성격을 알아보기 위해 기왕에 경주지역에서 기호문토기가 출토된 유적 가운데 28개 유적의 기호문토기 619점과 함께 검토를 시도해 보았다.
경주지역에서는 4세기 고분유적에서 기호문토기가 처음 출토되었으며, 6세기 후반 이전까지는 주로 고분유적 출토 고배와 뚜껑을 중심으로 기호가 시문되었다. 기호 가운데 ‘×’, ‘Λ()’, ‘⌗’은 일찍이 삼국시대부터 지역에 관계없이 고분유적 출토 토기에 시문되었으며, 특히 ‘×’와 ‘⌗’은 월성해자를 비롯하여 생활유적 출토 토기에도 지속적으로 시문되었다.
6세기 후반 이후부터 월성해자를 비롯한 생활유적에서는 고배와 뚜껑은 물론이고 대부완, 완, 시루, 옹 등 토기의 기종이 다양해졌다. 기호의 종류도 ‘⌗’, ‘×’, '大‘, ‘山’字와 유사한 유형을 비롯하여 시루, 동이, 옹 등 큰 기종에만 시문된 기호 등 다양해졌다. 이러한 현상은 토기의 대량생산과 분업화, 그리고 공인(집단)의 증가로 인해서 기호의 기능이 확대된 양상으로 추정된다.
7세기 후반까지는 문양과 기호가 함께 시문되기도 하였으나 밀집시문 등 인화문이 유행하면서 기호의 시문은 쇠퇴한 듯하다. 이후 기호는 토기제작과정에서 표기하기보다는 소비처에서도 표기가 가능한 墨(朱)書나 토기 저부에 얕게 긋는 형식으로 시문수법이 변화되어 명맥을 유지한 것으로 판단된다

영어초록

An analysis of the 133 pairs of potteries with symbols which have been excavated from Nodong-dong 12 in Gyeongju has put in three types by their inscriptions, and found that 103 pieces (77%) have symbols inscribed with a sharp tool, and that the types of potteries are mainly short foot mounted cups (50 pieces) and lids (24 pieces). Among the symbols the ‘井’ is the most (33 pieces), the symbol similar to the character ‘山(mountain)’, and some symbols inscribed are specific to the pottery type. With these findings this study attempts to examine and determine the characteristics of the symbols inscribed in the 619 pieces of potteries which have been excavated from 28 sites in Gyeongju.
In Gyeongju region the first symbol inscribed pottery was excavated from the ancient tomb site of the fourth century, and before the late sixth century the symbols were inscribed mainly in mounted cups and lids. The symbols ‘X’, ‘Λ()’ and ‘井’ were inscribed as early as the Three Kingdoms Period regardless the regions.
From the late sixth century in the dwelling sites including the Weolseong Moat there were various potteries found such as mounted cups, footed bowls (Daebuwan), steamers (Siru) and jars. The symbols also became diverse: ‘井’, ‘X’, ‘大’, and a symbol similar to the character ‘山'. The symbols inscribed on large potteries such as pots and jars became diverse too. These phenomena can be due to the mass production of potteries, division of labor and the expansion of public (group), which led to the expansion of the functions of symbols.
Until the late seventh century patterns and symbols were inscribed together, however, with the popularity of stamped designs and dense patterns the inscription of symbols seemed to be declined. After that, symbols were not inscribed at the pottery production stage, rather they were marked at the consumption places with a black (red) ink writing or with a shallow draw at the bottom of the pottery. This change seems to keep the tradition of inscribing in potteries remain in existence.
