<정읍>의 양면성 - 동아시아적 보편성의 한 징표 - (Two sides of Jeongeup)

초록

삼국시대 백제의 지역 노래인 <정읍>은 고려와 조선에 걸쳐 궁중정재 무고의 악장으로 사용되었다. 왕실이 이 노래를 수집한 것은 채시관으로 하여금 각지의 노래를 기록하여 백성들의 풍속을 관찰하고 득실을 깨달아 스스로 잘못 된 점을 바르게 고치고자 한 옛 제도를 따른 일이자 『시경』 「국풍」의 정신을 받아들여 실천에 옮긴 일이다. 『시경』의 15 국풍은 바로 15개에 이르는 서로 다른 지방 악조(樂調)이자 토풍(土風), 혹은 토조(土調)들이다. 그리고 그것은 주나라 왕조의 아악과 구별되는 악조들로서 각 제후국의 지방색채를 갖는다. 또한 그것들은 각 제후국들의 하층민들이 부르던 노래와 함께 경우에 따라 귀족들의 창작도 포함한다. 따라서 노래들의 내용・분위기・미학 혹은 구조나 형상화의 방법은 역대 왕조들의 속악, 일본의 국풍가요 등과 동질적인 성향을 갖는다. 『고려사악지』의 아악과 당악은 『시경』의 아・송, 속악은 『시경』의 국풍에 대응되는 성격을 지닌다. 『시경』의 「국풍」이 주나라가 봉한 15개 제후국의 노래들인 것처럼, 『고려사악지』에 수록한 3국[신라・백제・고구려]의 노래들도 그런 의식 하에 궁중에서 사용되었을 것이다. 속가들은 민간의 소박한 생활 속에서 만들어진 것들이라 해도 정치집단의 구성원들에 의해 채록되고 궁중이라는 정치적 공간에 수용되는 순간 텍스트는 정치적 멘트로 바뀐다. <정읍사>를 ‘정읍 지역에서 불려 내려오던, 특별한 내용의 민간 노래’로 규정하는 순간 그것은 『시경』의 국풍과 마찬가지로 정치적・역사적 의도를 지닌 특별한 해석의 대상이 된다. 독자나 청자, 연구자는 <정읍사>와의 대화를 통해 그것이 지니고 있던 비밀을 간파하게 되기 때문이다. 이런 점에서 <정읍>과 성격이 같은 상당수 『시경』 「국풍」의 노래들도 해석의 양면성을 갖고 있으며, 의례에 쓰이던 일본의 국풍가무들도 마찬가지였다. 사이바라를 비롯한 헤이안의 가요들 가운데 <아나타후토(安名尊)>・<미마사카(美作)>・<이세노우미(伊勢海)>・<고로모가에(更衣)> 등은 현재도 연주되고 있는 노래들로 이중적 의미를 갖고 있다. 『시경』의 「국풍」, 고려속가, 일본의 풍속가요 등 지역을 기반으로 하는 노래들로서 궁중의 의례에 사용된 것들은 대부분 이중의 의미구조를 지니고 있다. 이 노래들은 지역의 민초들이 부르던 노래였으므로 삶의 현장에 존재하는 것들을 소재로 꾸밈없는 정서를 표출했을 것이다. 그러나 지배집단의 의례공간에서 요구되는 내용이나 이데올로기와 맞지 않는 것들은 교묘한 해석으로 진실을 위장하는 성향을 보여준다. 무엇보다 궁중 무대예술에서 노래들의 이면적 의미가 반복적으로 문제될 때에는 노래 자체가 교체되는 경우도 빈번했을 것이다. <정읍>을 비롯한, 한・중・일의 지역 노래들로서 지배집단에 의해 간택된 것들은 통시적으로 이런 해석적 검증의 테두리를 벗어날 수 없었고, 그것이 바로 지역예술의 궁중 수용과 함께 부각되는 문화사적 의미이다.

영어초록

Jeongeup, a local song of the Kingdom Baekje during the Three Kingdoms Period, was used as an akjang of royal court jeongjae mugo throughout Goryeo and Joseon. The government of the dynasty accepted this song according to the old system, which the poem collector recorded songs from all over the country, observed the customs of the people, realized the good and bad, and corrected what was wrong by themselves. At the same time, it was something accepted the spirit of Shijing Guofeng and put it into practice. The 15 nations’ songs of the Shijing are 15 different local music and indigenous songs, or indigenous times. And it was the local songs of each small country as a musical tunes distinct from A-ak of the Zhou Dynasty. Those also include the creation of aristocrats in some cases, along with the songs sung by the lower class of each country. Therefore, the content, atmosphere, aesthetics, or method of composition or shape of the songs have homogeneous tendencies such as popular music of previous dynasties and Japanese people songs. The A-ak and Dang-ak of Goryeosa-akji have the characteristics of corresponding to the people songs of A·song of Shijing, Sok-ak has the characteristics of corresponding to the Shijing Guofeng. Just as Shijing Guofeng was songs of 15 small countries appointed by the Zhou Dynasty, the songs of the three kingdoms [Silla, Baekje, Goguryeo] included in the Goryeosa-akji would have been used in the court under the consciousness. Even if the people songs were made in the simple lives of the people, the text turned into the political comments as soon as they are recorded by members of the political group and accepted in the political space of the court. As soon as "Jeongeupsa" is defined as "a private song with special content sung in the Jeongeup area since ancient times," it becomes the subject of special interpretation with political and historical intentions, just like Shijing Guofeng. This is because readers, listeners, and researchers discover the secrets of the text through conversations with it. In this respect, many of Shijing Guofeng which have the same characteristics as Jeongeup, also have two sides of interpretation, and the same was true of the Japanese Guofeng songs and dances ceremonies. Among Heian's songs, including Saibara, Anatahuto, Mimasaka, Isenoumi, and Goromogae are songs that are still being sung and have double meaning. Most of the songs used in court ceremonies have double meaning structure as regional-based songs such as Shijing Guofeng, Goryeo songs, and Japanese people’s songs of Shijing. Since these songs were sung by local people, they would have expressed unpretentious emotions based on the things that exist in the field of life. However, those that do not match the content or ideology required in the ritual space of the ruling group show a tendency to disguise the truth with subtle interpretation. Above all, when the meaning of the inner side of the songs in the court stage art was repeatedly problematic, the song itself would have been frequently replaced. Those selected by the ruling group as local songs of Korea, China, and Japan, including Jeongeup, could not escape the boundaries of this interpretive verification, and that is the cultural historical meaning highlighted along with the acceptance of the court from local art.
