초록

본고는 1~5세기 호남 동부지역의 주거와 취락에 대한 연구성과를 개괄하고, 지역권별 취락의 변동과 의미, 주거·주거군·취락의 규모와 위계, 취락 유형과 경관 등을 검토하였다. 아울러, 취락의 발전과정을 지역 정치체의 성장과도 결부지어 보았다.
호남동부권에서 1~5세기는 백제가 이 지역을 영역화하기 이전단계이다.
세지역권으로 나누어 각 지역권별 취락의 입지·구조·출토유물·편년 등의 변천상을 개괄하고, 중심취락과 일반취락을 구분해 보았다. 취락의 입지는 구릉상부에서 평지로 점차 내려오는데, 환호가 있는 1~3세기대의 거점취락이 4~5세기대에는 평지로이동한다. 이는 1~3세기대의 개별 방어시스템이 4세기이후에 광역화되고 그 만큼 정치체의 규모가 커졌음을 의미한다. 주거지의 규모는 호남서부지역에 비해 소규모여서계층화의 진전이 상대적으로 늦었음을 알 수 있다.
각 읍락별로 거점취락과 일반취락이 구분되는데, 주거의 밀집도가 높은 거점취락에서는 방어시설·패총·대형주거지·외래계 유물·창고·생산시설·분묘 등이 빈출되어 일반취락과 차별성을 보인다.
호남서부권은 분묘유적이 취락과 인접하여 분포하는 경우가 많은데 비해, 호남 동부권은 취락에 비해 분묘유적이 희소하다. 이는 결국 위계화와 관련되고 호남동부권이 복합사회로의 전환이 지체되었음을 의미한다.

영어초록

This study summarized the research outcomes on the dwellings and settlements inthe eastern area of the southwestern region of Korea during the Three States period andreviewed the change and meaning of settlements in each district and the type and sceneryof settlements. The time scope for the research was the period before Baekje territorializedthis region, and the central period is between the 1st and 5th centuries.
The changes such as the settlement site, structure, excavated relics, andchronological recording were summarized by district and settlements were divided intocentral and general settlements. The site for settlement gradually moved from the top ofthe hill toward the flat land, and the stronghold settlement with defense facilities betweenthe 1st and 3rd centuries are found in the flat land between the 4th and 5th centuries. Theplane form of the dwelling gradually changed from circular shape to square shape. Thesize of the dwelling is smaller than those found in the western area, suggesting that theformation of hierarchy progressed relatively slowly.
The settlements in each district are divided into stronghold settlement and generalsettlement, and the stronghold settlement which is more populated is differentiated fromgeneral settlement by frequent findings of large dwelling, relics from outside, storage,ironware production facilities, and tombs.
In the southwestern region of Korea, tomb remains are distributed near settlementsin many cases; however, tomb remains are scarce compared with settlements in the easternarea of the southwestern region of Korea. This is eventually related with the formation ofhierarchy and indicates that the eastern area of the southwestern region advanced into thecomplex society rather slowly.
