서울 암사동 유적의 세계유산적 가치 검토 (Preliminary examination on the value of Amsadong Site in the perspective of Outstanding Universal Value)

초록

1925년 을축년 대홍수로 확인된 암사동 유적은 한반도의 대표적인 신석기시대 유적으로 신석기시대 연구의 기틀을 마련한 중요한 유적이며, 그 중요성으로 이미 국가지정문화재로 지정 보호되고 있다. 최근 암사동 유적의 가치를 새롭게 인식하여 사회문화적 자원으로서의 활용과 함께세계유산등재를 위한 준비가 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다.
암사동 유적의 그간에 연구를 검토해 보면 암사동 유적은 한반도 중서부지역에서 가장 이른시기의 유적으로 새로운 기후환경에 적응하는 과정에서 등장한 신석기문화를 보여주는 한반도의 대표적 고고학 유적이며, 유적의 입지, 출토 유물 등을 통해 초기농경의 도입, 정주형 취락의 조성 등 신석기시대 생계방식의 변화를 보여주고 있다. 특히 암사동 유적에서 출토된 빗살무늬토기를 표식으로 하는 토기문화는 침선문으로 변화하는 동아시아 토기문화의 보편성과, 첨저구분문계의 토기가 한반도 내에서 차별적으로 발생, 변화, 발전, 확산되는 과정을 증거하는 유적이라 할 수 있다. 물론 초기 빗살무늬토기 문화의 연구에서는 유라시아 대륙 토기문화와의 전파론적 입장의 연구도 있었지만 이는 한반도 및 동북아시아 등을 포함한 다층적인 공간설정을 통한 확장된 연구를 통해 재검토가 필요한 시점이다.
암사동 유적의 가치를 세계문화유산의 등재기준인 기준 i)-vi)과 비교해 보면 차별적인 토기문화, 변화하는 환경에 적응으로서의 새로운 생계체계 및 정주형 취락의 형성 등을 고려하여 iii)과 iv)의 등재기준의 적용이 가능한 것으로 판단된다. 다만 이런 세계문화유산으로 등재를 전략적으로 추진하기 위해서는 신석기 토기 및 빗살무늬토기 문화의 발생과 발전을 한반도를 포함하여 보다 넓은 공간범위를 기반으로한 비교연구가 필요하며, 최근 등재경향을 반영한 연속유산으로의 등재 방안 등의 검토 역시 필요할 것이다. 특히 연속유산으로의 검토를 위해서는 한반도 중서부 지역의 신석기 유적에 대한 검토를 통해 탁월하고 보편적인 가치를 검토할 필요가 있다.
세계유산제도는 유적이 가진 가치를 단순히 보호하는 것 뿐 아니라 문화적 자원으로서 가치를 확산, 증진하는 방안으로서 세계유산 등재를 위한 지속적인 노력을 기대해 본다.

영어초록

The Amsadong Site, which were discovered as the Great Flood in 1925, is a representative Neolithic site on the Korean Peninsula, and is already designated and protected as a nationally- designated cultural heritage due to their importance and significance. Recently, the value of the Amsadong site has been newly recognized and used as a socio-cultural resource, and preparations for the nomination of World Heritage based on the value and significance of the site.
According to research on the Amsadong site, it would be the earliest Neolithic site in the Midwest of the Korean Peninsula, and is a representative site of the Korean Peninsula that shows Neolithic culture that emerged in the process of adapting to a new climate in Holocene. In particular, the pottery culture, which is represented by comb-patterned pottery excavated from the Amsadong Site, is a archaeological evidence that proves the universality of East Asian earthenware culture that changes into a new decoration technique and the process of differentially occurring, changing, developing, and spreading of comb-patterned pottery culture in the Korean Peninsula.
In the early study of comb-pattern pottery culture, there was also a study of the diffusionism with Eurasian earthenware culture, but this is time to be reviewed through expanded research through multi-layered space setting including the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.
Comparing the value of Amsadong Site with criteria i)-vi), the nomination criteria of iii) and iv) can be met in consideration of differentiated pottery culture, new substance for adaptation to the changing environment, and the formation of settlement villages. However, in order to strategically promote the nomination as a World Heritage Site, it will be necessary to review the development of Neolithic pottires and comb-pattern pottery culture based on a wider space range, including the Korean Peninsula. In particular, for the serial nomination of World Heritage, it is necessary to review the outstanding and universal value through a review of Neolithic sites in the Midwestof the Korean Peninsula.
The nomination of World Heritage is an effective way to protect and promote the value of the value of Amsadong Site, and we look forward to continuous efforts for World Heritage sites.
