동아시아 학술교류의 회고와 전망 (Retrospect and Prospect for Academic Interchange in East Asia)

초록

동아시아 학술 교류 미래의 새로운 가능성을 살펴보려면, 먼저 동아시아학술이 직면하고 있는 문제에 대해 회고와 반성을 해 볼 필요가 있다. 동아시아의 현대 학술은 서양 학술 관념의 충격과 계발 하에 형성되었으며, 19 세기 이래 범세계적 범위에서의 漢學 연구는, 漢學(Sinology)에서 中國學 (China Studies)으로의 변환이 있었다 하더라고, 결국에는 모두 서양학술 구조의 일부분이었다.
구미의 漢學 연구 학계에서 漢學家들이 기꺼이 인정하는 중국학자들의작업 가치는, 주로 문헌의 정리나 고증 상에만 체현되며, 이론과 방법론적측면에 대해서는 그들 나름대로 구비하고 있을 뿐 아니라, 자신의 전통 이외의 것은 거들떠보지도 않는다. 이에 대해 우리는 냉정하게 반성해볼 필요가 있다. 우리는 혹시 연구 작업 과정에서 문헌 수집과 정리만을 중시하고 문제제기나 분석은 소홀히 하지 않았는가? 만약 우리의 연구 작업에서, 과제선택․이론가설․사고체계․주제의 의의 및 가치 등이 모두 구미 漢 學에서 빌려온 것이라면, 어떻게 과분하게 그들의 주목을 바랄 수 있겠는가? 이런 점에서 ‘방법으로서의 중국’을 주장한 일본의 미조구치 유조와 한국의 백낙청, 대만의 陳光興선생의 주장은 경청할 만하다. 이들은 여영시선생의 주장처럼 중국이나 아시아를 주체로 삼아 다시 다양한 내재적 실마리를 바탕으로 깊이 있는 연구를 진행해야 한다는 것이다. 아울러 일본의靜永健선생이 지적한 것처럼 ‘같은 시기 동일문화권 내 주변지역의 문화정치의 連動’에 대해서도 주의해야 한다.
이런 점에서 나는 중국 이외의 자료에서 중국을 이해하는 방법으로 ‘域 外漢籍研究’를 제안한다. 域外漢籍은 풍부하고 방대한 학술 자원으로, 우리에게 무수하고 신선한 학술 화제를 제시해주며 새로운 학술방법과 학술이념을 마련해준다. 그러한 까닭에 역외한적은 이미 고전학문을 재건하는과정에서 빠져서는 안 될 자료이며, 그 자체 또한 고전학 연구의 대상이 되어야 할 것이다.
물론 新資料이든 新觀念이든간에 그것들은 舊資料․舊觀念과 서로 맞물려 호응하고 參證하는 관계이지, 서로 대립하고 공격하거나 대체되는 관계가 아니라는 것이다. 자료는 관념의 통솔을 받으며, 방법은 연구 대상과연구 목적에 의해 결정된다.
동아시아 지식인은 서양문명에 대한 대응에 초점을 맞추었으며, 의식적․무의식적으로 동아시아 문명 간의 대화를 홀대하였다. 문학 방면에 있어서도, 동아시아 문학을 제쳐두고 멀리있는 문학에만 관심을 가졌다. 동아시아 지식인이 동아시아내의 교류와 대화는 더욱 강화할 필요가 있다. 동아시아 삼국 교류의 미래는 이러한 시야와 시각에서 관찰되고 설명되어야할 것이다.

영어초록

To examine new possibilities of future of academic interchange in East Asia, one should first conduct retrospect and reflection about the problem the East Asia scholarship is facing with. The modern academia in East Asia has been created under impact and development of Western scholastic notion, and studies on Sinology in a global scope since the 19th century have been, although there was once a change from Sinology to China Studies, parts of Western academic structures.
In the academic circle of Sinology in Europe and US, the value of task of Chinese scholars Sinologists are willing to acknowledge is mostly embodied in arrangement of literatures or historical research and equipped with their own theoretical and methodological aspects, never giving a look at things other than their traditions. We need to realistically reflect on it. Isn’t it by any chance that we only focused on collecting and arranging literatures in the process of research and neglected raising issues and analysis? If selection of project, hypothesizing theory, process of thinking, and significance and values of subjects are all borrowed from Sinology in Europe and US, how can we unduly expect their attention? In this sense, Mizoguchi Yujo from Japan who has insisted ‘China as a method,’ and the assertions of Baek Nak-cheong from Korea as well as Professor Kuan-Hsing Chen(陳光興) from Taiwan are worthy of our attentive listening. Their contention is that, as what Yeo Young-si’ argues, having China or Asia as the main subject, we must proceed in-depth study again based on various immanent clues. Along with that, as Takeshi Shizunaga(靜永健) from Japan pointed out, we must be careful of ‘interlocking of cultural politics neighboring regions within the same cultural area at the same period of time.’ In this respect, I suggest ‘Overseas Chinese Character Literature Study,’ as a way to understand China with materials outside China. The overseas Chinese character literatures, affluent and vast academic resources, propose numerous and fresh academic issues to us, providing new academic methods and philosophy. That’s why overseas Chinese character literature is the material which cannot be excluded in the process of reconstructing classical studies, and the literature itself should be an object of study of the classics.
Of course, however they are new materials or new concepts, they are in the relations that are engaged in the new materials and concepts to respond and prove; they do not oppose, attack or replace each other. Materials are directed by concepts, and methods are determined by objects and purposes of studies.
East Asian intellectuals focus on the correspondence to Western civilization, mistreating consciously and unconsciously the conversation between East Asian civilizations. In even literary field, they were only interested in literature in distance, disregarding East Asian literatures. It’s necessary to strengthen interchange and conversation of intellectuals within East Asia. The future of the three countries in East Asia should be observed and explained in such vision and point of view.
