동아시아 근대 중심주의의 성찰 (A Reflection of Centralism in Modern East Asia)

초록

본 논문은 동아시아 중심주의가 오랜 중화중심의 기축문화에 뿌리를 두고 있고, 그것은 서구 근대 중심주의의 충격에 의해 어떻게 변모되고 있었으며, 서구에 의해 만들어진 근대에 한국, 중국, 일본이 어떻게 그 같은 입장을 견지하였는지 살핀 것이다. 동아시아 근대 중심주의는 과연 시간적 조건에 적절하였는지, 국내외적으로 주변화, 소수자, 지방 문제를 야기한 점은 없는지 또한 성찰하였다.
역사 경험을 통해 볼 때 근대 서구중심주의는 이성의 메커니즘 속에 자본주의를 가능하게 하였고 물질에 대한 본능적 욕망은 제국주의와 식민주의를 불러 일으켰으며, 그러한 중심주의적 역학은 제3세계 국가 문제를 야기하기도 하였다. 또한 근대 유럽 중심주의는 동아시아, 중국, 일본, 한국 모두를 '주변'으로 만들더니, 이젠 일본이 한국과 중국을 주변화, 변방화하였다. 그와 동시에 동아시아 각국, 특히 한국과 중국, 내부에는 소수적 타자의 문제 또한 크게 발생하였다. 오랜 전제정권에 의하여 자행된, 동아시아 중심주의는, 강요된 이데올로기, 이분법적 획일성을 작동시킨 나머지, 국가간, 민족간, 지역간의 문제, 젠더(여성 차별), 주변화의 문제를 야기하였음에도 불구하고, 그에 대한 인식이나 발견은 전혀 없었다고 할 수 있다.
이 같은 맥락에서 근현대까지 계속된 하부 계층이나 소수자들이 겪는 고통에 대한 발견은 더더욱 기대할 수 없었음을 이 논문은 지적한다. 나아가 본 논문은 동아시아 근대 중심주의는 일정부분 관변적인 것이었고, 그것은 잘못된 옥시덴탈리즘일 수 있음을 경계한다. 예컨대 중국의 중체서용, 한국의 동도서기, 일본의 화혼양재의 중심주의 입장이 사물의 이치를 본질적으로 접근하려는 것이 아닐 수 있고, 이는 단순화된 이분법에 의한, 집권층의 부패 권력연장술은 아니었던가 묻고, 이는 오늘날 우리가 겪는 극단적 이분법 즉 양자택일적 사물접근법과 무관하지 않을 것이라고 본다.

영어초록

This thesis is to study that the centralism in East Asia had rooted in Chinese enlightenment as a standard of culture, it met changes from the western attack to the East, and how Korea, China, and Japan kept and changed their centralism in the Modernity forced by the West.
And the writer checks whether the centralism in the East Asia was proper to the situation of the time, it originated in too excessive dichotomy for solving problems, and resulted in the matters of borderization, minority, and locals and so on.
From historical experiences, we have seen that the centralism in the western modernity which meant mechanism made progressed capitalism possible, instinctive desires for materials caused expansionism and colonialism, and the power of centralism produced the matter of the third nations.
And modern Euro-centralism had East Asia including China, Japan and Korea borderized, and sequently Japan made Korea and China edged. At the same time each nations especially including Korea and China, had their problems of minor others, which resulted from each nation's despotic governments and also their own intrinsic centralism made their learning, politics, and educational systems peripheral, being responsible for their people's suffering.
And even if East Asiatic centralism in modern period, from despotic powers, made the problems of nations, local, gender(female differentiation), and borderization in the central ideology and the principle of standardization forced by nations, there is no trial to find and acknowledge them. In the same context there the discovery of low social stratum and minorities cannot be expected, this thesis indicates.
Furthermore the writer points out that the Eastern centralism, such as the doctrines that China should be body and the western culture is no more than the function, the East is the Way and the East is bowl, and Japan is spirit and the western culture is material for their nations, might be official occidentalism for the purpose of keeping the power of authorities, which is no longer from the reality of the situations. Nowadays we are experiencing the dual approach to the objects and the affairs too, and then it may have been rooted in the conventional method of selecting one alternative in modern East, the writer maintains.
