질베르 시몽동에서 기술과 존재 (Technology and Existence on Gilbert Simondon)

초록

이 글은 인간중심적인 것도 기술결정론적인 것도 아닌 새로운 기술이해의 가능성을 보여준 시몽동의 기술철학에 대해서 살펴보고 그 의의와 한계를 가늠해보고자 한다. 시몽동은 시스템의 준안정성과 상전이에 따른 발생적 생성이라는 독특한 관점에서 기술적 대상들과 기술성의 존재론적 본성을 고찰한다. 그는 인공물과 자연물 사이에서 구체화하는 기술적 대상들의 존재 양식, 기술발달의 정도에 따라 기술적 대상들과 인간이 맺는 상이한 상호협력적 관계와 공진화, 기술적 발명의 개체초월적 역량과 문화상전이에 따른 기술성의 발생 등 독창적인 기술에 대한 사유를 보여준다. 그에 따르면 기술의 발전은 반-인간화나 반-자연화를 촉진하지 않는다. 기술은 본성상 인간과 자연, 인간과 인간의 관계를 매개하는 소통의 역량이며, 기술적 앙상블이 구축된 정보네트워크 시대는 기술을 매개로 실현된 개체초월적 관계를 통해 집단적 공명과 소통이 가능할 수 있다. 하이데거와 마르크스의 기술론에 필적할만한 비판적 대안으로 유력한 시몽동의 기술철학은 노동과 사용도구의 관점이 아닌 기술적 본질과 기술적 활동의 관점에서 인간과 기술의 앙상블을 강조하며 정보기술문화 속에 살아가는 현대 인간의 삶을 이해할 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 열어주었다. 그러나 문화상전이론에 전제되어 있는 존재론적 가설의 정당화 문제, 그리고 기술적 본질의 존재론적 탐구로 인해 소홀해진 기술과 사회ㆍ정치ㆍ경제의 관계 문제는 좀 더 검토해 볼 필요가 있는 한계지점들로 지적할 수 있다.

영어초록

This article aims at examining G. Simondon’s philosophy of technology and measuring its significances and limitations, because he opened a new possibility of understanding technology which is neither anthropocentric, nor techno-centered. Simondon investigated the ontological nature of technological objects and technology in terms of his peculiar point of view, that is, genetical becoming caused by metastability of system and phase-transition. The modes of existence of technological objects concretized between the artificial and the natural, the cooperative relations and co-evolutions deployed differently depending on the levels of technological developments, the transindividual power of technical invention and the generation of the technical caused by phase-transition of culture, and so forth stand for his original thoughts about technology. According to him, technological developments accelerate neither anti-humanization nor anti-naturalization. Technology is, by nature, communicative power that mediates both between human and nature and between human and human, and the collective resonance and communication can be achieved only by ransindividual relation mediated and realized by technology in the information network age built on technological ensemble. Simondon’s philosophy of technology as an alternative to those of Marx and Heidegger opens a new possibility to understand contemporary, information-technology oriented, human life by emphasizing the ensemble between human and technology not from the standpoint of labour and instrument but from that of technological nature and activity. However, justifying the ontological hypothesis which his theory of phase-transition of culture presupposes, and explicating the relation between technology and society, between technology and politics, and between technology and economy on the basis of his ontological investigation on technological essence remains expecting further considerations and discussions.
