초록

이 글은 3·1운동의 33인으로 잘 알려져 있고, 90평생을 민족의 근대와 자주독립에 매진한 한국근현대사의 산증인이자 거인인 권동진의 생애와 민족운동을 구명한 것이다. 1880년 군인의 길에 들어선 그는 갑신정변과 청일전쟁, 갑오개혁, 을미사변 등의 한말 격동기를 온몸으로 헤쳐 나갔고, 그로 인해 오랜 일본 망명 생활을 해야 했다. 1906년 귀국해서는 천도교와 대한협회를 통한 계몽운동에 나섰으며, 3·1운동 때는 천도교 측을 대표하며 만세운동을 추진하다가 옥고를 치렀고, 이후 60이 넘는 나이에도 사회주의 사상을 민족독립운동에 수용하려 한 진정한 인류주의자였다. 그리고 사회주의 세력과 연대를 이루는 ‘국민당’을 세워나가려 했던 것이든지, 1926년 6·10만세운동을 계획 추진할 때 천도교 구파를 이끌고 힘을 다해 도왔던 것이든지, 민족통일전선체인 신간회 창건의 주역으로 활약하는 등 종교 이념 뿐 아니라 정치·사회사상까지 초월하며 민족독립운동에 전력투구한 그였다. 1929년 광주학생운동 때는 신간회 차원에서 지원하기 위해 세칭 민중대회사건을 주도하다가 옥고를 치르기도 했다. 그런가 하면 1930, 40년대 일제가 대륙침략을 위해 전쟁에 광분할 때에도 민족적 지조를 잃지 않으며 만년청절을 지켜 나갔으며, 해방 정국에서는 1947년 순국하는 그날까지 독립국가 건설의 일선에서 활약한 민족의 지도자였다. 그가 남긴 독립운동 족적은 3·1운동에 이어 6·10만세운동, 신간회운동, 광주학생운동에 이르기까지 광범하고 지대했다.
해방을 맞이할 때, 그의 나이 85세를 넘어서고 있었다. 그럼에도 독립국가를 건설해야한다는 일념으로 그는 건국운동에 매진해 갔다. 그는 임시정부환영준비위원회 위원장을 맡아 독립운동의 정신을 계승한 국가 건설에 힘을 기울이는가 하면, 1945년 12월 신탁통치의 소식이 전해지자 신탁반대국민총동원위원회를 결성하고 독립국가 수립에 온 힘을 쏟아 나갔다. 또한 정치권이 비상국민회의와 민주주의민족전선으로 대립하는 분열상태를 보이자, 신한민족당을 결성하며 ‘자율적 통일정권 수립을 목표로 전민족의 총의와 총력을 집중할’ 것을 촉구하기도 했다.
이러한 그의 건국운동은 독립운동을 계승한 민족운동이었으며, 진정한 독립을 달성하려는 제2의 독립운동이었다. 독립 달성을 위해 마지막 불꽃을 태우던 그는 해방정국의 혼란을 가중되던 1947년 3월 9일 87세의 나이로 서거하고 말았다.
