‘鄕曆’에서 ‘東曆’으로: 조선후기 自國曆을 갖고자 하는 열망 (From Local Calendar ‘Hyangnyŏk (鄕曆)’ to East Calendar ‘Tongnyŏk (東曆)’: An Aspiration for Independent National Calendar in Late Chosŏn Korea)

초록

I would like to characterize the project to formulate Chosŏn's own calendar, based on Shixian li system(時憲曆), during the 18th century as an effort to establish a national calendar, a step forward from the practice using the ‘local calendar (鄕曆).’ It refers to a national calendar of Chosŏn, both of whose formality and function are as reliable as Chinese ones and worthy of the sovereign status of Chosŏn dynasty, not a mere local calendar dependent upon the Chinese one that was serving as a universal calendar in the East Asian region. If Ch’ilchŏngsan(七政算, Calculation of the Motions of the Seven Celestial Determinants, 1442) of the early Chosŏn period was a ‘local calendar’ proper to the national status as ‘independent vassal state,’ it is evident that King Chŏngjo(1776-1800) and his literati bureaucrats did not wish to have that kind of calendar. The aspiration to have Chosŏn's own calendar is also represented by the frequent use of the term, ‘Tongnyŏk (東曆)’ in the 19th century. Tongnyŏk, with its literal meaning of Chosŏn's own calendar as opposed to Hyangnyok, local calendar, might be a term coined through the awareness of the national identity.
