초록

조선이 쇠망하면서 전통이 해체되고 한자 교육에도 많은 변화가 일어난다. 이 과정에서 아동들을 가르치기 위한 새로운 교과서가 필요했고, 그것이 바로 주흥사 『천자문』과 전혀 다른 개념인 우리식 천자문인 동천자류의 출현이다. 이들은 『천자문』이라는 철저히 고착화된 규범적 틀을 깨고 시대적 변화에 따른 새로운 감각과 생각을 반영하고자 했다. 본고는 바로 이러한 점을 염두에 두고 동천자류의 자료적 성격과 일제강점기에 있어서의 저술배경 및 저술방향, 그리고 그 의의를 포괄적으로 다루고자 했다.
동천자류의 자료는 대체로 네 가지 계열로 나뉜다. 신편천자문은 『천자문』에서 ‘천자’는 빌려 오되 다른 측면에서 천자를 구성하는 경우이며, 분류천자문은 글자의 내용에 입각하여 일정한 어휘 범주를 설정하고 이에 따라 분류 내지 체계화한 천자문이다. 그리고 사상천자문은 유교 등 특정한 이념이나 사상을 아동들에게 가르치기 위한 것이며, 역사천자문은 중국이나 조선의 역사를 1천 자로 구성하여 엮은 것이다.
일제강점기 동천자류 저술의 배경으로는, 개항을 거친 후 한일합방이라는 당대의 역사적 환경을 먼저 들 수 있다. 때로는 현실을 수용하고 때로는 여기에 저항하면서 당대인들은 천자문을 만들었다. 서당이 많아지면서 주흥사 『천자문』이 활발하게 간행된 것도 중요한 배경이 된다. 이 책은 가장 믿을 만한 한자 교육서였기 때문이다. 그리고 주흥사 『천자문』에 대한 한계를 자각한 결과이기도 하다. 서당교육이 활발히 전개되면서 재야 지식인들을 중심으로 이 같은 자각이 활발히 일어났다.
일제강점기 동천자류 저술의 방향은 각 계열마다 서로 달랐다. 신편천자문 계열은 대체로 전문 서포를 통해 출판되었기 때문에 당대인들의 현실적 관심도에 따라 저술되었으며, 분류천자문 계열은 기초한자를 체계적으로 이해하는 데 초점을 두었다. 그리고 사상천자문 계열은 유가적 전통을 계승하는 것이 일차 목표였으며, 역사천자문 계열은 당대를 읽는 상이한 시각에 따라 黨色이 천자문에 나타나기도 하고, 친일적 경향이 나타나는가 하면 이를 비판하며 독립의지를 불태우기도 했다. 따라서 동천자류는 당대의 총체상을 보여준다고 하겠다.
동천자류는 중국어나 일본어 등을 두루 부기하여 미래를 담보하는 아동들에게 세계화의 길을 열어주고 있다는 측면에서 중요한 의의를 확보하고 있다. 그리고 아동들의 기초한자 숙지와 함께 인성교육을 강조하고 있는 점, 민족의식을 고취하고 독립의지를 강화시키고 있는 점, 당대를 바라보는 다양한 시각을 천자문에 반영시키고 있는 점 등을 들 수 있다. 이밖에도 가사문학 등 여타의 문학 장르에 수용되거나 공조를 이루면서 저술되고 있는 점 역시 중요한 의의 가운데 하나이다.

영어초록

The liquidation of tradition resulting from the collapse of the Joseon Dynasty brought lots of changes to Chinese character education, and thus there arose a need to write new textbooks. Responding to the need, Dong-cheon-ja species, Korean style one thousand character texts which are totally different from 『the Thousand Character Classic(千字文)』 by Xingsi Zhou(周興嗣), were created. They were written in a way to reflect novel views and thoughts rather than to follow the entrenched framework of 『the Thousand Character Classic』. With this in mind, this study comprehensively discussed the features of Dong-cheon-ja species as materials, background and direction for writing them, and the meanings of their publications during the Japanese colonial period.
Dong-cheon-ja species are divided into four categories. The new style one thousand character texts borrowed the concept of ‘one thousand characters' from 『the Thousand Character Classic』, but the one thousand characters in the texts were organized differently from those in 『the Thousand Character Classic』. The classified one thousand character texts were produced after setting specific vocabulary categories based on the meanings of characters and then classifying and systemizing the characters. Besides, the ideology one thousand character texts were aimed to teach specific thoughts and ideologies including Confucianism to children. The history one thousand character texts told of the history of China and Korea.
Background for writing Dong-cheon-ja species during the Japanese colonial period involved Japan's annexation of Korea more than anything else. Sometimes accepting and sometimes resisting the reality, people at the time wrote one thousand character texts. The vigorous publication of 『the Thousand Character Classic』 written by Xingsi Zhou resulting from an increase in the number of private schools called Seodang also significantly contributed to the writing of Dong-cheon-ja species. As Seodang education was conducted vigorously, intellectuals living outside of the government bureaucracy became increasingly aware of the limitations of 『the Thousand Character Classic』, the text considered as the most trustworthy material for Chinese character education.
Directions for writing Dong-cheon-ja species during the Japanese colonial period were different depending on which category the one thousand character text belonged to. The new style one thousand character texts were written according to the interest of people at the time because they were usually published through specialized bookstores. The classified one thousand character texts focused on making students systematically understand basic Chinese characters. The history one thousand character texts contained the features of political parties, pro-Japanese attitudes or the willingness to regain independence from Japan, depending on various views on the circumstances at the time. Therefore, it can be said that Dong-cheon-ja species show the comprehensive aspects of situations at the time.
Dong-cheon-ja species are significant in that they opened the door the door to globalization for children by adding Chinese and Japanese words. In addition, they not only helped students to learn basic Chinese characters but also emphasized character education, instilled ethnic consciousness, reinforced the willingness to regain independence, and reflected various aspects on situations. Furthermore, they are significant in that they were accepted by other literature genres like Gasa-literature(歌辭文學) or written in connection with them.
