초록

이 논문은 제주도에 전승되는 궤눼깃당본풀이의 존재 의의와 특징을 규명한것이다. 이 본풀이는 돗제라고 하는 돼지고기를 바치는 의례에서 구연되는데돼지고기를 바치는 의례는 제주도에서만 행하는 독특한 음식의례이다. 돗제에서 연행되는 의례를 중점적으로 규명하면서 이 의례의 특징을 규명하는 것이필요하다고 판단하여 의례의 실상을 보고하였다.
여기에서 구연되는 본풀이가 영웅서사시의 특징을 가지고 있는 것이라고 생각하면서 이 영웅서사시의 내용적 특징이 무엇인지 말하고자 했다. 영웅서사시의 핵심은 일곱째 아들이 수난을 이겨내고 다른 곳에 가서 영웅적 위업을 달성하고 돌아와서 신으로 좌정하는 내용이 요점인 점을 밝히고자 했다. 본풀이에서 영웅의 일생에 의한 특징이 있음을 말했다. 동시에 요소들의 상충되는 면모에서 시대적인 흔적을 다양하게 담고 있는 점도 반영하였다.
신화와 의례의 핵심적 이론 가운데 하나인 의례와 신화의 상관성을 재론했다. 신화의 구술적 상관물이 곧 의례라고 하는 견해가 있는데 이를 달리 규명하고자 했다. 신화는 집약적인 것이고, 의례는 해체적인 것이라고 하는 점을 다루고자 했다. 집약과 해체의 상관성 속에서 본풀이가 행해지는 점을 말하면서 이를 본풀이와 돗제의 관련성을 새롭게 규명했다.
세계서사시의 특별한 사례로 본풀이가 긴요하고, 그 가운데서도 당신본풀이와 같은 영웅서사시가 구전되는 사실을 중요하게 내세워서 평가할만 하다고 말했다. 이러한 각도에서 이 본풀이는 세계에 내세울 만한 중요한 가치가 있음이확인된다.

<Oral Epic story summary> Once upon a time, there used to live Keumbaekjo in Utsondang, Mr. Semyungdo in Saetsongdang, and Mr. Sorosocheonkook in Maealsondang. Keumbaekjo and Sorosocheonkook had tied the nuptial knot, had 6 children and conceived 7th child. Keumbaekjo advised Socheonkok to do farming, and he went to Obaengyee Koolwat, to plow a field While Sorosocheonkook was cultivating land, servant Ms.
Neutindeok Cheonghanim took lunch out.
At the right moment a monk, Sambae, who was passing by and pressed by hunger, asked Sorosocheonkook for some food, and he gave the monk his lunch. Though Sochenkook felt hungry, he, as an aristocrat, couldn't eat the food that the monk left, so he roasted the black cow which flowed the field. After that, on the way home he slaughtered and ate other person's cow which razed on the roadside.
Keumbaekjo complained about it and severed husband and wife.
Sorosocheonkook, on the way to Alsondang, met Mr. Semyungdo and made his living by roe deer hunting. Mrs. Keumbaekjo gave birth to the 7th son. Being worried about her son's becoming a bastard, Keumbaekjo took him to Socheonkook. The child sitting on his father's lap touched his father's beard and hit his body. Considering the son a undutiful son, the father summoned another son, Soicheol in East Sea. He asked Soicheol to put the son in an iron case and to set him afloat.
The iron case drifted about at the mercy of the waves, and was hung from a upper branch of a coral which beonged to Whang Jae-kook, the king of Yo country. The king, Whang Jae-kook, heard a strange sound which divided a flowing tide and an ebbing tide continuously. And he ordered his three daughters to search for the reasons. The two oldest of them said that there was nothing, and the youngest informed that an iron case was hung from a coral branch.
The king had his daughters lower the iron case. The first and the second daughters couldn't, the third daughter took it d.own by shaking the coral three times. The emperor gave them an order to open the case. The two oldest was unable to perform his order once more. But when the youngest touched a lock, it opened by itself.
A general came out of the case and lied to the king, Whang Jae-kook that his Abangkook is Sochenkook and his Eomeongkook is Mrs. Baekjoo and he paid a courtesy call the king on his way to suppress the revolt in Cheonja country, Kangnam. Whang Jae-kook wanted to make him his son-in-law. When the general entered the first daughter's room, he didn't even open his eyes and in the second daughter's room he did the same thing. At last he gave a broad smile in the youngest daughter's room. He became the king's youngest son-in-law. The general ignored meals completely and asserted that he ate meals, alcoholic beverage and mea like a general. Whang Jae-kook exerted himself to treat his son-in-law, the country's storehouse was being emptied. Finally, Whang Jae-kook told his daughter and her husband to leave his palace. The general demanded Whang Jae-kook for a bow made of 600,000kg of coral, and an arrow made of 60,000kg of coral.
With the help of the bow and the arrow, the general defended the disaster brought out in Cheonja country, Kangnam. The emperor gave the general a piece of land and a scroll of sea. The emperor bad him enter Jeju island, find good land and collect a land use tax.
The general and his wife tied the boat up at Woomootgae, Jongdallee, went up Sanggody, Byulbang and gaze at Wootsondang to find out that his mother was fanning beans on the hill. Mr. Cheongha, Neutindeok told Mrs. Keumbaekjo that the crown prince whom she deserted in his age of three, came to attack his Abangkook and Eomeongkook, but she didn't take it seriously and scold severely instead. At that time the son came up Wootsondang, his mother was sitting with rubbing her eyes because she had a bean hull in her eye.
When the son used a blue fan, the mother in amazement went up the ridge of Komoony, Wootsondang and seated herself, and the father came down Alsondang and seated himself.
While the crown prince was finding a good land, he arrived at Mangdong mountain in Kimnyung by chance. And the scenery of ripening grain was worth of seating himself. Since there were no offsprings to treat him day and night, he asked his wife's parents to raise a storm so that people couldn't harvest in Kimnyung villiage, Cheonghae. A grandmother, Mrs Hyun, found out that it was the general's creation. Only then they solicited the parents of the crown prince's wife, the king of Yo country, to stop the storm. The village people consulted the place where they set up an altar to offer their first crop of rice for the year. He seated himself on Koinoikee, and said that he would eat a farming bull.
They promised that they would breed their pig as large as the bull, and give it to him after they severed its guts. In old times, when a Tot memorial service was carried out, a grandfather called Mr. Moon, went up Koinoikee and collected stones to make a place for the service, and broke branches from trees to arrange a Tang Toma with royal azalea sticks put into it. However when an emergency brought out on the 3rd April, 1948( in the year of Moojin), people couldn't come up the mountain, therefore they made it a rule to perform ancestral rites at house gate, Ilmoonjeon. When people treated this one family three years in a row, their descendants could lead peaceful lives so that they paid land use tax and water tax.
