초록

본 논문은 한대(漢代)의 제례 기념물인 화상석(畫像石)의 제작 의도, 화상석에서 표현되는 이야기와 그 의미의 세 가지 측면을 통해 화상석에 나타나는 유교 사상과 신화적 사유를 검토하고, 이를 통해 한대의 독특한 문화에서 나타나는 신화적 사유와 유교와의 접점과 그 가치를 재조명하고 모색한다.
Ⅱ장에서는 무량사(武梁祠)의 효행고사를 중심으로 효 이데올로기를 드러내고자 하는 외적 의도를 검토하였다. 그중 증자(曾子)의 화상에는 『효경』 제작자로 널리 알려진 그의 상징성을 통해 효를 선양하려는 의도를 비롯하여 『전국책』 고사를 인용하여 군주와 신하의 신의를 드러내고자 하는 의도가 있었음을 알 수 있다. 정란(丁蘭)의 화상에서는 실정법을 넘어서는 효의 가치를 드러내고 있으며, 안국(安國)의 화상에서는 죽은 이가 아닌 산 자의 공적을 드러내려는 의도를 확인하였다. 더욱이 일반적인 부모와 자식 사이의 효를 넘어서 열녀의 중요성을 강조하는 사회적 풍토를 확인할 수 있었다.
Ⅲ장에서는 화상석의 신화적 제재로서 서왕모(西王母)와 관련한 불사의 관념과 이를 통해 구현되는 죽은 이의 영원성에 대해서 검토하였다. 특히 누각배례도를 통해 마차를 타고 출행한 묘주가 후손의 제사를 받는 장면을 재연함으로써 선계로 상승할 가능성을 표현하였음을 확인하였다. 이것은 무덤과 사당에서 반복하여 거행하는 제사를 통해 조상의 영원함이 실현되기를 기원하는 후손의 염원이 조상 배례의 형상과 서왕모를 비롯한 선계의 형상으로 구현하고자 한 것이다. 곧 『중용』의 ‘사사여사생((事死如事生)’의 진정한 의미로서 조상의 영원함을 현세에 실현하고자 하는 의도인 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis examines the Confucian thought and mythological reason shown in the stone statues through three aspects: the production intention, the story expressed in the stone statues, and the meaning of the stone statues, which are memorial stones for ancestral ceremonies in the Han Dynasty.
Through this, it is a paper that re-examines and seeks the contact point between mythological thought and Confucianism in a unique culture and its value.
In Chapter 2, the external intention to reveal the filial piety ideology was reviewed, focusing on the filial piety story of Muliang temple. Among them, in the image of ZengZi, in addition to the symbolism widely known as the producer of 『Xiaojing』, it can be seen that there is an intention to reveal the trust of the monarch and subjects through faithfully following the state system by citing the story of 『zhanguoce』. The story of zhengran reveals the value of filial piety beyond the law of reality, and the story of Anguo confirms the intention to reveal the achievements of the living, not the dead. Furthermore, it was possible to confirm the social climate emphasizing the importance of virtuous women beyond the filial piety between parents and children.
In Chapter 3, the idea of immortality related to Xiwangmu as a mythological subject of stone statues and the eternity of the dead realized through it were reviewed. In particular, it was confirmed that the possibility of ascending to the world of immortals was expressed by reenacting the scene where the owner of the shrine, who rode in a carriage, received a ancestral rite for his descendants through the picture of a memorial service in a pavilion. This is to realize the wishes of the descendants, who pray for the realization of the eternity of their ancestors, through the repeated rites held in tombs and shrines, in the form of ancestor worship and the image of the sages, including Xiwangmu. This is the true meaning of serving the dead of the 『Zhongyong』 as if they were alive, and the intention is to realize the eternity of their ancestors in this world.
