돌굿유구의 구조 (The Structure of Dolgut Features)

초록

수혈, 삼가마 등으로 불리던 돌굿유구는 발굴사례가 점점 늘어가고 있음에도 불구하고 고고학적 연구대상으로 주목받지 못하고 있다. 돌을 달구어 삼이나 닥을 찌는 용도로 쓰였던 돌굿유구는 삼베와 종이의 생산기술과 변천을 추정할 수 있는 중요한 자료로 활용될 수 있다.
본 연구는 대구 신서동유적에서 확인된 4기와 41기의 기발굴조사 된 사례를 통해 돌굿유구의 전반적인 출토경향과 입지, 구조를 분석한 것이다. 이러한 분석을 토대로 삼베와 종이의 생산과 유통에 대한 역사적인 고찰을 진행하여 돌굿유구의 변화과정을 추론하였다. 또한 돌굿유구 조사에서 놓치기 쉬운 문제점들을 짚어보고 고고학적 사실규명을 위해 필수적으로 요구되는 조사방법들을 제시해 보았다.
돌굿유구는 물과 땔감, 돌의 공급이 원활해야하는 작업특성상 (자갈이 포함된)사질토양의 하천변, 선상지, 곡간지 등에 입지하는 경우가 많았다. 돌굿유구의 구조는 두 개의 구덩이에 각각 발열실과 증숙실을 설치하고 증기구로 연결한 분리형과 하나의 구덩이를 격벽으로 분할한 격벽식, 하나의 구덩이에 아래위로 발열부와 증숙부를 설치한 일체형으로 나눌 수 있다. 돌굿유구는 삼베와 종이의 생산, 유통구조의 변화에 따라 대량의 작업에 유리한 분리형과 보다 적은 양의 작업에 유리한 격벽식, 일체형을 선택하여 사용하였던 것으로 보인다.
지금까지 정식으로 조사보고 된 돌굿유구는 내부출토 유물이 없는 사례가 많고 분청사기, 백자, 어골문 기와 등과 같이 서로 다른 시기의 유물이 공반되는 경우가 많아 대부분 고려 말~조선시대에 조성되었다고 할 수 있다. 다만, 보고서 미발간으로 본 연구대상에서 제외하였지만 경주 화곡지구 지표수보강 개발사업부지 내 경주 화곡리유적 Ⅰ구역에서 출토된 돌굿유구는 내부에서 삼국시대 토기편이 출토되어 돌굿유구의 출토연대를 높일 수 있는 중요한 자료가 될 것으로 보인다.
조선후기로 갈수록 삼베와 종이의 생산이 민간에 의해 주도되었다는 문헌자료에 따라 돌굿유구도 함께 변화하였을 것으로 추정된다.
돌굿유구는 삼베와 종이의 생산에 관한 중요한 고고학 자료이므로 층위에 따른 주도면밀한 조사와 기록이 이루어져야 하고 과학적인 분석을 위한 시료확보도 소홀히 할 수 없는 것으로 판단된다. 무엇보다 조사전 유구확인 작업이 중요하다고 할 수 있다.
앞으로 돌굿유구는 지형, 구조에 대한 세밀한 분석, 과학적 연대측정, 토양분석 등과 같은 조사과정을 통해 시대와 작업대상 작물, 구조, 형식에 관한 보다 명확한 사실들을 밝힐 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

Little archaeological attention has been paid to dolgut features, which until recently were referred to as pit features, hemp kilns etc., despite the fact that their presence has been increasingly idenitified though excavation. Dolgut features, which consisted of stones that were heated in order to steam hemp and mulberry paper, were an important resource for the production of hemp and paper. Therefore, they can provide valuable information regarding the technology and development of these resources.
This study analyzed four dolgut features identified at the site of Sinseodong, in Daegu, and examined the published material on 41 previously discovered dolgut features.
It focused on examining the overall exacavation contexts, as well as the location and structure of the dolgut features. The results of the analysis were combined with a historical review on the production and distribution of hemp and paper, and this was used to infer the developmental process of dolgut features. Since it is easy to miss these dolgut features during excavation, the excavation methods required in identifing the features were also discussed.
Dolgut features required vast supplies of water, firewood, and stones, and therefore tended to be found on sandy soil (containing gravel) in riverside locations, alluvial fan locations, and valley locations.
The structure of dolgut features can be classified into three types. Separated types consisted of two pits, in which steaming and heating were carried out, which were connected through a porthole. Bulkhead types consisted of a single pit which was divided using a bulkhead. Finally, in the case of one-piece types, the steaming unit and heating unit were stacked upon one another within a single pit structure. Following changes in the production and distribution structure of hemp and paper, it appears that separated types which were beneficial to bulk work was replaced by bulkhead and one-piece types which were beneficial to small amounts of work.
Most of the officially reported dolgut features were constructed around the end of the Goryo Period and during the Joseon Dynasty. While not many of the dolgot features were found to contain artifacts within the structure, they have been found in association with other types of features which have yielded buncheong ware, white porcelain and eogolmun tiles - artifacts which belong to different time periods. However, it should be 돌굿유구의 구조 157noted that a dolgut feature excavated from the Hwagok-ri Zone 1 site, in Gyeongju, was found to contain sherds of pottery dating to the Three Kingdoms Period, thereby providing important information regarding the emergence of this type of facility.
According to historical sources, the production of hemp and mulberry paper was undertaken by the private sector in the late Joseon Dynasty, and this may have generated changes in the dolgut featuress.
Dolgut features may be regarded as an important archaeological resource which provides information on hemp and paper production. Therefore a careful investigation and recording must be made of the stratigraphy, and we must not be neglectful in obtaining samples for scientific analysis. Above all, the identification of these features is the most important tack which must be undertaken during excavation.
It is hoped that, in the future, we may more clearly understand the chronology,structure, and types of dolgut features, as well as the kinds of crops processed, through the study of the surrounding terrain, structure analysis, scientific dating, and soil analysis.
