박정만 시에 나타난 ‘돌’의 상징성 연구 - 대학주보에 실린 「돌」과 시집 『잠자는 돌』을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Symbolism of ‘Stone’ in Park Jung-Man - Focusing on ‘Stone’ in the University Bulletin)

초록

박정만은 1968년 1월 『서울신문』에 「겨울 속의 봄 이야기」로 등단하기 전인 1965년 7월 경희대학교 <전국 고교생 백일장 대회>에서 시「돌」로 장원에 입상한다. 시 쓰기 첫 발걸음이 되는 「돌」에서 발아된 ‘돌’의 심상은 그 이후 1968년 『서울신문』 신춘문예 당선작인 「겨울 속의 봄 이야기」로 이어져 첫 시집 『잠자는 돌』(1979) 에서 다시 전면에 등장한다.
「돌」에서 시작된 자아와 세계가 조화로웠던 신화적 공간에 대한 소망이 박정만 시를흐르는 한 저류라는 문제의식에서 1965년 7월 14일 수요일 대학주보 256호 4면에 수록된 「돌」을 새롭게 발굴하여 살펴봄으로써, ‘신화적 공간 희구(希求)’라는 박정만 시 쓰기연속성을 관통하는 성소의 매개적 공간이 ‘돌’이 갖는 상징성임을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 매개적 공간에서 이루어지는 전진과 퇴행의 시 쓰기라는 수행성과 함께 역설적이고순환론인 깨달음이 「돌」에서부터 시작되어 첫 시집 『잠자는 돌』에 지속됨을 확인할 수있었다.
‘준비’와 ‘기다림’이라는 상징성을 기반으로 ‘수행의 성소(聖所)’라는 의미의 ‘돌’은 < 아기장수 우투리 설화>의 화소 ‘돌’과 박정만 ‘돌’의 공통분모인 동시에, 박정만 ‘돌’이 갖는 전통지향적 독자성이 확보되는 지점이기도 하다. 비극적 현실에 의해 ‘돌’이라는 퇴행 공간에서 이루어지는 기다림의 정서적 동력이 시 쓰기라는 수행성을 통해 발현될 수있는 것은 <아기장수 우투리 설화>의 ‘돌’에 내재한 양가성인 ‘죽음-부활’에 기인한다.
즉, 돌은 ‘시 쓰기의 수행공간’으로 비극적 현실을 극복할 수 있는 성스러운 장소인 성물이 되기 때문이다. 연구를 통해 추적된 ‘돌’의 상징성은 ‘거룩한 돌’로서 신화적 공간을희구하는 시 쓰기의 수행공간이며, 동양적 순환론의 깨달음이 일어나는 역설적 공간이된다. 초기 박정만 시에 나타나는 ‘돌’이라는 상징적 공간은 후기 시에서는 ‘잠, 꿈’을 거쳐 ‘산’과 ‘선(禪)’으로 변주하게 되는데, 신화적 공간의 매개적 공간인 ‘돌’로 확장되는것은 원시 신앙의 한 이미지적 특성으로 세계 중심의 축이 속세, 화자의 일상적 삶 속으로 이동하여 ‘사랑’을 발견하게 되는 변증법적 발전과정과 그 흐름을 같이하는 것이다.

영어초록

Park, Jung-Man had won the First Prize of The National High School Students Writing Contest , hosted by Kyung-Hee Univ. in July 1965, with the poem , “ The Stone ”. The symbolic image of ‘ stone ’ was showed again in the first poetical work , “Spring Story in the Middle of Winter” , which made him start his literary career as a poet , mounted the platform as Shinchunmunyae(新春文 藝) of The Seoul Paper in 1968. The image of ‘ stone ’ made appearance again in the name of the first collection of poems , The Sleeping Stone (1979). Until now , there is no further study on the poem , The Stone , but the comment , Park, Jung-Man had won the First Prize of The National High School Students Writing Contest, hosted by Kyung-Hee Univ. in July 1965, with the poem , The Stone , was written on his chronological list. With this critical mind , this article focuses on the symbolic image of the stone and on tracing the change of it , according with relating with other words in the poems. Also this article makes a chance “ The Stone ” to be first appearance , was published at the weekly newspaper of Kyung-Hee Univ. on July 14th 1965(no. 265, p.4).
The symbolic meaning of ‘ Stone ’ is one of the main stream of Park, Jung Man. Stone is the x of divinity as the shrine of the world. According to the Rock of the Baby General Tale, the one of the common frenzied tale , stone (rock) is considered as a place for Baby General to prepare rebellion or resurrection.
Repeated training and preparation as the symbol of the stone are the common part of the Baby General Tale and Park, Jung-Man. Also those are the unique part of Park, Jung-Man, which distinguishes him from other poets , using same poetic word ‘ stone ’. The ambivalence of stone , death-resurrection , leads the poetic persona to the retrogression like dream , connected with the past and death , and despair by the tragic perception of reality. Even though poetic persona feels despair , he keeps on treatment of poetry in order to overcome those tragedy. The ironical realization of the existence of the rebirth and life in the symbolic death is the another unique characteristic point in his first part of his poems. In his late part of his poems , the stone is changed to the mountain , which means ‘ absence of ego ’ . The extension of the stone a symbolic place as the desire of the divinity and mediated place from the world to the paradise , means poetic persona achieves ‘ Perennial Philosophy of the East ’ . At the same time , it is possible that the images of paradise (axis mundi) are moved to the world from the paradise , as the same principle of the temple or church in the world. It finally makes the persona find out the small beautiful things like flowers and plants near to him and the love among the world. Finally , the holy stone is the symbolic place for the dialectical development and the treatment of poetry , Desire for the divinity .
