트라우마 이론의 폐단과 대안 서사 모색: 돈 드릴로의 「미래의 폐허에서」와 『떨어지는 남자』를 중심으로 (The Negative Effect of Trauma and Seeking of an Alternative Narrative: Focusing on Don DeLillo’s “In the Ruins of the future” and Falling Man)

초록

현대 트라우마 이론에 지배적인 자리를 차지하는 사건중심 트라우마 이론 모델(혹은 기습적 트라우마 모델)은 이론적인 영역에서부터 치료 영역에 이르는 많은 영역에서 유익한 역할을 해왔다. 그런 유용성에도 불구하고, 이 이론 모델은 맹점을 갖고 있다. 사건 자체와 그 피해자 사이의 이분법적 관계에 중심을 두고, 문제의 사건을 해석하기 때문에, 그 틀에 포섭되지 않는 다른 고통 경험들은 배제되기 때문이다. 그럼으로 그것은 결국 특별한 사건과 그 사건의 관련 당사자들을 위한 편향된 관점을 제공하는 위험한 결과를 낳는다.
편향된 관점을 가진 트라우마 이론은 트라우마 문학과 비평 장르에 그대로 적용되어왔다. 그럼으로 지배적 트라우마 이론과 관련된 문제가 문학작품과 비평에 반복적으로 재현되는 것이다. 더 심각한 것은, 트라우마 장르에서 생산된 악순환이 대중 독자들 사이에도 스며들어, 다양한 폭력 사건에 대한 해석과 해법에 영향을 미친다는 점이다. 트라우마 장르 내부의 악순환을 깰 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. 그러기 위해선 기존의 지배 트라우마 이론 모델의 문제를 인식하고 대안적 서사를 마련할 필요가 있다.
이 같은 문제인식의 바탕에서, 본 논문은 주류 트라우마 이론을 재연한 기존 트라우마 서사의 대안적인 서사를 제시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 논문에서 돈 드릴로의 『떨어지는 남자』는 바로 그 대안적 트라우마 서사 가능한 한 방편으로 제시된다. 『떨어지는 남자』는 지배적인 트라우마 모델에 기대서 쓴 그의 에세이 「미래의 폐허 속에서」 이후에 나온 소설이다. 이 소설에서 드릴로는 그의 에세이에서 묘사된 트라우마 공식을 수정, 보완하고, 지배적 트라우마의 대항서사를 위한 새로운 시나리오를 제시함으로써, 트라우마 장르의 악순환을 끊어낸다. 이 논문은 『떨어지는 남자』가 트라우마 장르의 악순환을 깨는 방식에 초점을 맞춘다. 그 작업을 위해서 먼저 「미래의 폐허 속에서」에서 나타나는 트라우마 서사의 형태을 검토하고, 그러고 난 뒤 에세이에서 재현되는 것과 달리 『떨어지는 남자』에서 트라우마 서사가 재현되는 방식을 찾는다.

영어초록

“An event-centered model of trauma theory”(or “a punctured- trauma theory”) which holds a dominant position in the modern trauma theory study has played a beneficial role in many areas, from theoretical field to therapeutic field. Despite its usefulness, this theory model exposes a blind spot. Because the model interprets an event in question, focusing on d​ichotomous relationship between the event itself and its victim, other misery experiences which do not fit into this frame is excluded, therefore produces the danger result which provides a biased perspective for specific event and the person directly concerned In the regard of this problem of the theory, this essay notices that this trauma theory model including the lopsided perspective has been true for a genre of trauma criticism and literature, therefore repetitively reproduces the problem and limit of a dominant trauma theory. Worse, the vicious circle produced in a trauma genre is expanded to public readers and effects on an interpretation of many other violent events and the way to solve the problems. Here is the reason why breaks the vicious circle of trauma genre. To do this, it is necessary to recognize the problem of the existing dominate model of trauma theory and provide an alternative narrative for it On the ground against this an awareness of the problem, this essay aims to find and provide a possible way to create a counter narrative against existing dominate trauma theory. Falling man is the novel which his essay “In the Ruins of the Future” written depended on a dominate trauma model before the novel. Here Dellilo corrects and enhances the formula of trauma enacted in his essay and suggests new scenarios for a counter narrative against the dominate trauma theory. break the vicious circle of trauma genre. This essay puts emphasis on the way how Falling Man breaks a vicious circle of trauma genre. For this work, this essay first examines the form of trauma narrative in “In the Ruins of the Future”, and then finds and reveals modes of trauma narrative represented in the different way from his essay.
