초록

동아시아 문인들의 사유의식 속에서 예술의 지위는 리더의 자질배양과 관련된, 일종의 ‘수양’(修身)적 차원에서 그 논의가 진척되어 왔다. 특히 예술을 통한 이러한 수양과정은 ‘인문학’을 기반으로 삼아 왔다. 그것은 창작자의 도덕성과 학문적 성취도와 관련된 그 사람의 활동능력에 따라서 예술의 품격이 결정되는 특징으로 나타난다. 환언하면 예술작품을 통해서 작가 즉, 문인사대부로서의 정체성을 살필 수 있다는 의미이다. 이러한 의미에서 문인화는 그 사람의 인문주의 정신이 녹아난 작가의 총체적 사유의식이 담겨진 예술이다. 즉 현실과 이상 경계에 서있는 문인의 의식세계가 고스란히 담겨진 哲理적 양식을 갖추고 있다. 따라서 문인화는 지금의 현실을 내가 어떻게 인식하고 있는지, 그래서 앞으로 내가 나가야 할 방향은 무엇인지를 의미있는 형식을 통해서 함축해서 압축적으로 표현한다는 특징을 보인다.
연구자가 주목하는 바는 이처럼 지성사 위치에서 논의되는 일련의 회화창작론이다. 意象文化로 대변되는 동아시아 예술은 이미 예술을 일개 예술가 본연의 몫으로 보기 보다는 시대를 이끌어가는 지식인들의 소명의식이 담긴 시대적 요구에 따른 결실물로 인지된다. 따라서 동아시아 회화로 일컬어지는 문인화는 지성사적 위치에서 재해석되는 것이 마땅하다고 본다. 이러한 생각에서 연구자는 오늘날 문인화계 외현으로 시각을 돌려봤으며, 이로써 신문지상에 만화형식으로 그려진 시사만평에 주목하였다. 우선적으로 시사만평이 삽화된 신문이라는 언론지는 현실사회의 다양한 문제를 직시하는 지식인들의 관점들이 집약된 공간이기 때문이다. 이들 지식인들은 우리 사회문화의 다양한 문제에 대해서 누구보다도 직접적으로 고민하고 있다. 더욱이 신문은 현실에 대해 고민하는 제2, 제3의 지식인들에게 그 소식을 전달해주고 있다. 기본적으로 신문은 이 시대의 다양한 사건들을 사실적으로 전달해주는 것을 그 목적으로 하고 있다. 동시에 칼럼과 독자 기고와 같은 다양한 강호제현들의 고수들이 여기에 참가하고 있다. 이들은 서로 긴밀하게 상호간의 사유의식을 공유하면서도, 중요관심사에 따라서 진보와 보수로 갈리는 담론을 형성한다. 이 모두는 雅會文化로 일컬어지는 과거 문화지식인들의 지적 담론방식 및 형식과 매우 유사성을 띠고 있다.
더욱이 신문에 게재된 시사만평은 지금 우리가 가장 주목하는 사건의 문제점을 압축적인 형상을 통해서 독자에게 함축적으로 그 의미를 전달하고 있다. 비록 시사만평은 담담하게 은유적으로 자신의 생각을 담은 문인화와 달리, 비판적 견지에서 해학적으로 인간의 형상과 함께 간단한 단어 혹은 문장을 통해서 풍자 형식으로 메시지가 전달되는 그림이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 간략하면서도 압축적인 형태로 시대적 문제의식을 담아내고 있는 형식적 틀은 시대인식과 주체정신을 상징적 물상을 통해서 담아내는 문인화의 형식 및 존재의미와 매우 유사한 특징을 공유하고 있다. 예컨대 간단한 그림과 함께 메시지를 함축적으로 전달시킬 수 있는 단어 또는 문장을 동반하고 있다는 점 등은 기호화된 양식을 그려내고 그 의미를 낙관에 적용시킨 전통적 문인화 양식과 유사하다. 이 점은 문화지성사적 맥락에서 문인화의 계승문제와 맞물린 해석이 가능한 지점이다. 문인화의 현대적 변주의 양상으로 시사만평의 예술적 가치를 읽어낼 수 있다는 의미이다.

Related to the qualities of a leader culture, a kind of status of art in the "improve" dimension, the discussion has been advanced in the grounds of literary consciousness of our East Asia. I've been based on the "humanities" for the process of cultivation of these through the arts in particular.
