    초록

    The purpose of this study is trying to build the lay leadership in Catholic Church. It is known that Catholic Church has a typical hierarchy structure and an institutional character. In the vertical structure of the church could be only the clergy taken a role as a leader. In other words, there seems to be no possibility of the lay leadership in the institutional Catholic Church.
    In the years since the Second Vatican Council(1962-1965), Catholic Church has tried to change from the vertical structure as ‘Institutional Church’ to the horizontal structure as ‘Communion Community’. Due to the paradigm shift of the Church structure it becomes more and more important of the role and charismen of the laity. Today, therefore, laypeople are not merely the clergy's collaborators, but rather share in the responsibility of the Church's ministry.
    This article consists in three parts; in the first part I would like to set forth the paradigm shift of the society and Catholic Church, and then in the second part I try to examine the meaning of the modern leadership in the society and Catholic Church. Lastly, in the third part the specific christian characters of the lay leadership are clarified on the base of the christian spirituality.
    Consequently, I will suggest four points to build lay leadership effectively in Catholic Church. At first, lay people should be aware of self-identity as people of God and Body of Christ. Secondly, it is necessary to be a good leader favoring the consolidation of a mature and committed laity. Thirdly, lay people should change of mentality shifting from considering themselves collaborators of the clergy to recognizing themselves as co-responsible for the being and action of the Church. Lastly, the special commitment of laity is to evangelize the world, it means, lay people could be a servant leader in our society as well as in the Church. It is sure that to serve for others based on the religious virtue can make our world better place to live. To build the lay leadership it is necessary to think of the position of the laity who is living in the world. Thus, I argue that the lay leadership should be based on the christian spirituality, namely ‘diakonia’(serve). Consequently, the leadership of lay people can be called 'servant leadership'.
