초록

본 연구는 계명대학교 행소박물관 소장 필자미상의 <영모도>와 추가 사례들을 중심으로, 채용신 영모도의 도상과 화풍이 민간 화단에서 어떻게 수용되고 변용되었는지를 고찰하였다. 채용신은 초상화의 대가로 널리 알려져 있으며, 특히 고종의 어진을 통해 높은 명성을 얻었다. 그는 주로 전북 지역에서 활동하며, 지역사회의 문화적 중심으로 자리 잡았다. 채용신의 화조·영모도는 그의 초상화와 마찬가지로 많은 사람들의 선망의 대상이었으며, 독창적인 도상과 세부 묘사를 통해 화조화와 영모화 분야에서도 뛰어난 성과를 남겼다.
본 연구는 계명대학교 행소박물관 소장 필자미상의 <영모도>와 채용신의 여러 영모도 병풍을 면밀히 비교하여, 버둥거리는 말, 어미개와 강아지, 사슴, 원숭이 등 그의 영모도에서만 나타나는 독특한 도상과 유사성을 확인하였다. 필자미상의 <영모도>는 표현 기법과 완성도 면에서는 부족함이 있었으나, 채용신의 도상과 구성을 충실히 반영하며 그의 화풍이 민간 화사들에게 미친 영향을 보여주는 중요한 사례이다. 이 외에 채용신의 영모도 영향을 받은 것으로 여겨지는 국립중앙박물관 소장의 필자미상 《화조영모도》 병풍들을 통해 채용신 영모도의 도상과 양식이 민간 화단에서도 높은 인지도를 가졌음을 살펴보았다.
채용신 영모도의 확산은 그의 작품이 단순히 상류층의 전유물이 아니라 민간에서도 강한 호응을 얻었음을 보여준다. 이는 채용신의 작품 세계가 단순히 전통적 화조화와 영모화의 계승에 그치지 않고, 당시 대중의 미적 감각과 문화적 요구를 충족시키며 전통 회화의 대중화와 현대화를 연결하는 역할을했음을 시사한다.
본 연구는 채용신 영모도가 민간 화단에서 어떻게 수용되고 변형되었는지를 구체적으로 분석함으로써, 그의 작품 세계와 예술적 유산을 새롭게 조명하였다. 본 연구가 채용신의 화조·영모도가 지닌 가치와 역사적 의의를 논의하는 데 기여하기를 기대한다.

This study examines the anonymous <Bird-and-Animal Painting> from the Hengso Museum of Keimyung University, focusing on its stylistic imitation of Chae Yong-shin’s bird-and-animal paintings and exploring its broader significance. The <Bird-and-Animal Painting> is composed of four panels, each depicting a horse, a pair of deer, a dog with her puppies, and a monkey. These animals are portrayed beneath different trees: a willow, a pine, a paulownia, and a maple. The motifs and compositions closely resemble those found in Chae Yong-shin’s works, suggesting that this painting may have been modeled after Chae’s distinctive style.
Chae Yong-shin is widely recognized as a master portraitist of the early 20th century, best known for his official portraits of Korean royalty, including Emperor Gojong. However, Chae was also prolific in the genre of bird-and-animal paintings, where he developed a unique and innovative style. This study highlights the specific motifs of a struggling horse, a nursing dog with puppies, deer, and a monkey, which appear frequently in Chae’s bird-and-animal paintings. Through a detailed comparative analysis, the motifs and techniques of the anonymous <Bird-and-Animal Painting> were found to closely align with those of Chae Yong-shin’s works, indicating a strong likelihood of imitation.
Chae Yong-shin’s bird-and-animal paintings are distinguished by their unique composition and expressive brushwork, setting them apart from the works of other contemporary artists such as Ahn Joong-sik and Jo Seok-jin. Chae’s style became a model for many anonymous folk painters, whose imitative works reflect the popularity and influence of his paintings in the late Joseon and early modern period. The <Bird-and-Animal Painting> at Hengso Museum of Keimyung University serves as a significant example of this trend, demonstrating how Chae’s distinctive iconography was disseminated and adapted by lesser-known artists.
In conclusion, this study identifies the <Bird-and-Animal Painting> at Hengso Museum of Keimyung University as a derivative work strongly influenced by Chae Yong-shin’s bird-and-animal paintings. This finding sheds new light on the widespread recognition and demand for Chae’s works during the early 20th century. The study not only underscores Chae Yong-shin’s artistic contribution but also provides valuable insight into the transmission of his style within the broader context of Korean art history, offering a reevaluation of his legacy in the genre of bird-and-animal paintings.
