‘거제도’의 전쟁포로에 대한 기억과 흔적 - 손영목의 <<거제도>>를 중심으로 (Memories and Traces of the Prisoners of War in Geojedo - Focused on Son Yeong-mok’s Geojedo)

초록

이 논문은 손영목의 <<거제도>>를 연구대상으로 하여 거제포로수용소에서 이루어지는 전쟁포로들의 일상을 거주민들과 피란민들과의 관계 속에서 살펴보는 한편, 기억과 흔적을 통해 ‘그때’는 있었지만 ‘지금’은 존재하지 않는 전쟁포로에 대한 존재를 규명해 보았다.
1950년대 거제도는 이산과 학살의 대상이 된 전쟁포로뿐 아니라 이곳에서 뿌리를 내리고 살아가던 거주민과 흥남철수를 통해 유입된 피란민들의 일상이 이루어지던 장소였다. 전쟁포로, 거주민, 피란민을 거제포로수용소를 접점으로 하여 호명한 <<거제도>>는 이름 없이 살다가 죽거나 혹은 흩어진 이들을 기억과 복원의 대상으로 끌어올린 중요한 문학적 통로이다. 총 18장의 장편소설 <<거제도>>의 서사가 거제포로수용소를 구심점으로 하여 크게 세 갈래 이야기로 구성된 것은 이러한 이유에서였다.
‘거제도 포로수용소 유적공원’에는 전쟁포로가 남긴 유물들로 구성된 물질적 흔적만 파편적으로 남아 있다. 따라서 이곳은 전쟁포로들의 저항과 배신, 폭동의 활동은 물론 거주민의 고통스런 희생과 강제 이주, 그리고 피란민들과의 생계유지를 위한 피나는 노력 등 비물질적인 흔적과는 괴리되어 있다. 하지만 <<거제도>>에서 거제포로수용소라는 장소는 물질적 혹은 비물질적인 흔적들로 아주 복잡하게 구성되어 있다.
<<거제도>>에는 전쟁포로의 존재를 규명할 수 있는 비물질적인 흔적까지 생생하게 포착되어 있다. 이는 작가 손영목이 자신의 경험기억뿐 아니라 ‘그때 그곳’, 1950년대 거제도에 살았던 거주민, 피란민, 전쟁포로들의 경험기억들까지 사실적으로 서사화했기 때문에 가능한 일이었다. 서사화 과정에서 공식 서술에서 망각되거나 왜곡된 친공포로 혹은 지나치게 기억되거나 부각된 반공포로에 대해 균열을 낸 <<거제도>>는 포로수용소를 단순한 소재나 배경으로 삼았던 다른 작품들과 변별되는 의미 있는 작품이라고 하겠다.

영어초록

This study examined the daily life of prisoners in prison camps through the relationship between the civilians living and the refugees in the island with the aim of studying Geojedo of Son Yeong-mok. And also this defined the existence of prisoners of war who were in the past but do not exist now through memories and traces. In the 1950s, Geojedo(that is Geoje-Island) was a kind of crossing or meeting place where the daily life of the refugees who came in through the withdrawal of Hungnam and the life of civilians of the island as well as the daily life of prisoners who were subjected to disaster and massacre.
In the novel Geojedo, the prisoners, civilians and refugees, were remembered or restored through the place of Geoje Island. So the novel Geojedo is an important literary passage to remember those who scattered or died without name. It was for this reason that the narratives of the 18 full-length novels Geojedo are largely composed of three stories mainly taking place in Geoje prison camp.
Historic Park of Geoje POW Camp only reveals the side of material traces such as materials left at the prison camp from lives of the prisoners. And fails to reveal the side of immaterial traces such as resistance and inevitable treachery among the prisoners, the riots, the civilians’ painful sacrifices and deportation, and prisoners’ desperate behaviors to survive. However, in the novel Geojedo, the Geoje Island prison camp is complexly composed of material and immaterial traces. Geojedo vividly captures immaterial traces which can define the existence of prisoner of war. This was possible not only due to the memories of experiences of the author Son Yeoung-mok but also due to the realistic description of the memories of experiences of the civilians, refugees and prisoners who lived ‘at that place, at that time’, which is Geoje Island in the 1950s. That is, through the narrating process, the novel Geojedo tries to break the concept of the prisoners who were neglected or distorted in the formal records and who were overly remembered or highlighted. Therefore, the novel is meaningful in a way that it is different from other works which mainly use Geoje Island prison camps as themes or backgrounds.
