조선시대 제주도 漂流·漂到人을 통한 정보·지식의 유입 양상 (Information·Knowledge Inflow Pattern Through the Jeju Castaways and the Foreign Castaways in the Joseon Dynasty Period)

초록

본 논문은 ‘이국 표류 제주인’ 및 ‘제주 표도 이국인’들을 통해 유입된 정보와 지식들의 양상을 추적함은 물론, 궁극적으로 이것이 조선 사회에 끼친 영향에 대해 살펴보았다.
전근대 시기 당시 닫힌 세계였던 조선과 달리 동아시아 각국은 국제적인 무역항을 거점으로 한 광역의 교역 네트워크가 형성되어 있었다. 즉, 중국의 복건과 광동, 일본의 규슈일대를 비롯, 안남(베트남), 여송(필리핀), 서양의 포르투갈, 네덜란드 등은 동아시아 해역을 서로 왕래하며 通交해 나갔다. 이때 동아시아 해상 교통로의 중앙에 위치한 濟州島는 이들의 里程標이자 寄港地(때때로 汲水處의 역할 수행)였던 동시에 海航의 위험요소가 산재한 주요 표착 다발지역으로서, 해역을 오가는 많은 異國人들이 빈번하게 제주도에 漂到되었다. 더불어 異國으로 표류되었다가 구사일생으로 살아 돌아온 제주인 또한 상당했다. 이에 ‘이국 표류 제주인’과 ‘제주 표도 이국인’들은 좀처럼 해외에 대한 정보를 접할 수 없었던 조선정부를 비롯한 당대 지식인에게 탐문의 기회를 제공하였고, 이를 정리·저술하여 닫혀 있던 조선의 변화와 개방의 기회를 꾀하였다.
다시 말해 그 누구보다도 바다를 무대로 생업에 종사하면서 여러 각 지역의 주변정세에 밝았고, 외부세력에 기민하게 대응할 줄 알았던 이국 표류 제주인 및 제주 표도 이국인들이 전달해 준 해외의 이색적인 정보와 지식은 당시 성리학의 사상적 각성에 의해 조선의 변화와 개방의 기회를 꾀하고 있던 조선 실학자들의 호기심을 자극하는 원동력으로 작용하였다. 결국 이는 당시 조선의 닫힌 세계의 빗장을 열어주는 매개체적 역할을 하였음을 시사해 준다.
요컨대 이들 표류 제주인을 비롯한 제주 표도 이국인들은 자신들의 의도와는 상관없이 조선의 정치·경제·사회 전반에 걸쳐 이국에 관한 이색적인 정보(지리, 지형·풍토, 물산, 대외정세)와 선진기술 및 지식(수차 및 병기제작, 선박제도·조선술, 외국어) 등을 전달하는 중요한 첨병역할을 하였으며, 그러한 점에서 이들은 비공식 영역에서 국제교류의 역할을 담당한 셈이었다. 이와 동시에 이들은 또 다른 제3자에게 자신들이 습득한 지식을 전수하는 등 지식의 공유와 재생산의 動因으로 작용되어지고 있었다.

영어초록

This paper traces the patterns of information and knowledge that have flowed through ‘Jeju castaways’ and ‘foreign castaways’ and ultimately examined the impact on the Joseon society.
Unlike Joseon, which was enclosed world during the 15th~19th centuries, East Asian countries had formed a wide trade network based on international trade ports. In other words, Fujian and Guangdong in China, Kiushu in Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, Portugal and Netherlands in the west have been exchanged and entered into friendly relations with each other in the East Asian waters. At this time, Jeju Island which is located in the center of the East Asian Maritime transportation route was a milestone and port of call (occasionally served as a water source), and a major spot where many dangerous elements were scattered. Many foreigners who traveled to and from the ocean were often drifted on Jeju Island. In addition, the number of Jeju Islanders who were drifted to a foreign country and then returned after barely survived were significant. Hence, the ‘Jeju castaways’ and the ‘foreign castaways’ provided opportunities to explore outside for intellectuals including the Joseon government who could hardly access information about the foreign countries. Moreover, the Joseon government attempted to change and open up their country by organizing and writing castaways’ experience.
In other words, the ‘Jeju castaways’ and the ‘foreign castaways’, who were engaged in the business of the ocean more than anyone, were familiar with the surrounding situation of various regions, acted smartly to external forces, and delivered the extraordinary information and knowledge from abroad. The delivered information and knowledge stimulated the curiosity and acted as a driving force for Joseon intellectuals who had attempted to change and open up the country through ideological awakening of Neo-Confucianism at that time. Thus, this suggests that it played a mediating role in opening the closed world of Joseon at that time.
Regardless of their intention, these castaways played an important frontier role to deliver the extraordinary information (geography, topography·climate, product, foreign affairs), and advanced technology and knowledge (hydraulic turbine and weapon producing, vessel system․shipbuilding, foreign language). In this regard, they were responsible for international exchanges in the informal sphere. At the same time, they were used as an opportunity to share knowledge and reproduce such as transferring learned knowledge to other third parties.
