19세기 책가도(冊架圖)의 새로운 경향: <호피장막도(虎皮帳幕圖)>를 중심으로 (A New Current of Chaekgado in the 19th Century: Focusing on a study of ‘Scholars Accoutrements in a Leopard Skin’)

초록

삼성미술관 리움 소장 <호피장막도> 8폭 병풍은 기존의 책거리 형식과 다른 양식으 로 전개되어 눈길을 끈다. 병풍 전체 화면에 표피(豹皮) 장막이 드리워졌고, 병풍의 5 면과 6면을 중심으로 장막 안 공간을 보여준다.
이 연구에서는 <호피장막도>가 보편적인 민화(民畵)또는 책가도의 범주에서 해석 되었던 연구와 관점을 달리하고자 한다. 구체적으로 용어의 개념과 병풍의 양식, 표현 된 기물의 특징 분석을 통해 조선 19세기 경화세족의 물질문화를 보여주는 작품으로 분석하고자 한다.
이 작품은 궁중화원이 제작하거나 궁중에서 사용된 책가도에서 볼 수 있는 장막이 드리워진 형식과 함께 민간에서 널리 유통된 호피와 표피의 문양을 병풍으로 제작하여 사용한 두 가지 양식의 결합으로 볼 수 있다. <호피장막도>의 형식상 가장 큰 특징은 호피를 비단 장막처럼 사용한 것과 정교한 필치로 장막 안 공간에 여러 가구를 배치하 고 기물(器物)들이 자유롭게 놓여있는 공간을 그려냈다는 점이다. 가구 안과 밖에는 문방사우(文房四友)를 비롯한 서책과 고동기(古銅器), 도자 등 문인들의 생활이 연상 되는 기물이 장막 안 공간의 주인공이 어떤 행동을 하고 있는지 암시한다.
최근 문갑(文匣) 위에 펼쳐진 서책의 내용은 다산(茶山) 정약용(丁若鏞, 1762-1836) 의시로밝혀졌다.정약용문집에수록되지않았던시가병풍에적힌전례는기존책가 도에서볼수없는특수한경우다.이를통해병풍을주문했던주문자와정약용의관계 를 추측해볼 수 있고, 정약용과 친밀했던 경화세족(京華世族)을 중심으로 이상적인 주 거론을 전개했던 19세기 이후 물질문화의 양상을 고찰할 수 있다.
이 작품의 주문자는 병풍을 통해 자신이 이상적으로 생각하는 현실에 존재하는 그 럴듯한 공간의 이미지를 자신의 공간을 찾는 사람들에게 제공하여 주문자가 의도하는 또다른상상의세계로안내하고있다.이를통해상상과현실의매개체로활용되고있 는 조선시대 <책가도>의 새로운 면모와 변화상을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

Scholar's Accoutrements in a Leopard Skin, an eight-panel folding screen in the collection of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, is notable for its form and style, which differ from other paintings in the chaekgeori (scholar's accoutrement collection) genre. A curtain of tiger or leopard skin is painted across all eight panels, with the scene behind it revealed principally on the fifth and sixth panels only.
This study adopts a different perspective to previous research, which has interpreted Scholar's Accoutrements in a Leopard Skin in the context of general minhwa (民畵; folk paintings) or of chaekgado (冊架圖; bookshelf paintings). Specifically, I intend to analyze the work as one that shows the material culture of certain noblemen in mid-to-late 19th century Joseon, by analyzing terminological concepts, the style of the screen and the characteristics of the objects depicted in it.
This painting can be seen as a combination of two styles – the curtain-covered style found in chaekgado painted by court artists or used in palaces, and the tiger skin pattern in common public use – produced and used as a screen. Scholar's Accoutrements in a Leopard Skin's most salient characteristic in terms of form are the use of a tiger skin like a silk curtain and the delicately rendered depiction of various items of furniture strewn with objects behind the curtain. In and around the pieces of furniture are items that call to mind the life of a scholar, such as the “Four Treasures of the Study” (文房四友; brush, ink, paper and inkstone), books, old copper vessels and ceramics, hinting at the actions of the person behind the curtain.
It has recently come to light that the text on top of the stationery chest is a poem by Dasan Jeong Yak-yong (茶山 丁若鏞, 1762-1836). The inclusion on a folding screen of a poem by Jeong not found in his collected works is unprecedented in the chaekgado genre. It allows us to speculate about the relationship between the client who commissioned the screen painting and Jeong, and offers a glimpse of the material culture of influential Seoul nobility in the mid-to-late 19th century.
The client who commissioned this work wanted the image on the screen to lead those visiting his personal space into his imagined, ideal version of reality. This shows a change to a new aspect of Joseon folding screens: their use in mediating between imagination and reality.
