Study on the World Exposition Space Characteristic and Exhibition : Focusing Survey on the Exhibition Preference of the Expo Milano 2015

(Background and Purpose) The World Exposition is one of the three most celebrated events in the world and it has changed its characteristics and value over time. Social, cultural, economical and other factors are reflected in World Expositions, however the Expo site plays the most important role in showing its characteristics and value of the World Exposition. In the Expo site, participants are able to display its own identity within their individual space throughout the designated duration of time and the individual space is constructed according to the Expo theme and it is used to deliver thematic consciousness and attract visitors. In addition, a large Expo site has a various national and theme related pavilions including the Theme Pavilion and these pavilions should consider exhibition presentation in order to maximize the visitors interest. This study has the purpose of drawing the conclusion through theoratical consideration of the World Exposition that examines the characteristics of the site and by conducting a survey, visitors and operating staff’s preference can be found according to the exhibition method. (Method) This study has rearranged the characteristics of the Expo site into three categories, which are environmental, physical and functional. And the study used these three categories to understand the Expo site’s environment composition, effect on visitors and the function of the Expo. The study is analyzed mainly around the Expo Milano 2015 and the study will organize the theme guide and theme space of the Expo Milano 2015 to understand its thematic consciousness and theme message. In addition, a survey was conducted on site to conclude visitors' plan and the direction of exhibition. (Results) In order to investigate the composition of the space and exhibition presentation, survey was done from visitors and operating personnel of the Expo. Visitors' survey, which will give the objective point of view, was conducted in two different occasions and the survey was conducted to those personnel who worked in the Korea Pavilion since they have visited many other pavilions throughout the Expo period and had the opportunity to have comparison analysis. From the result of the survey, the study could inference the expected elements, visitors average observation duration in a day and average visited pavilions in a day. (Conclusions) The World Expositions have the characteristic of presenting the space for a large size of visitors to view the space in a short time and only for the limited period. The best described theme selected by the visitors was the pavilion which the visitors can experience to understand the theme and the best exhibition presentation felt by the visitors was the pavilion which included performance. If the pavilion with the best described theme is selected as the Best Pavilion, then the theme message will be sustained in visitors’ long-term memory and in result, the theme message can be practiced in real life. In this case, the exhibition composition has achieved the purpose of the World Exposition. Through a survey on pavilion ranking and characteristics, more studies need to be done in this area. In anticipation of further studies, this current study hopes to be the basic data model for the bidding of Exposition and building of Korea Pavilion in the next World Exposition.
