조선후기 도산서원 원장의 구성과 그 특징 (The Composition and Characteristics of the Heads of Dosan Seowon(陶山書院) in the Late Joseon Dynasty)

초록

이 논문은 조선후기 약 300년 동안의 도산서원 원장의 구성에 대한 분석을 통해 그 특징을 살핀 것이다. 도산서원 원장직은 서원을 대표하면서 서원과 관련한모든 일에 대한 책임을 지는 자리였다. 서원을 대표하는 존재이기에 학식과 덕망을 갖출 것이 요구되었고, 일단 선출된 이후에는 그 권위를 인정받았다. 도산서원의 원임안과 각종 고문서를 주 자료로 이용하고 그 외 사서와 자료를 활용하였다.
조선후기 300년을 100년 단위로 크게 세 시기로 구분하여 각 시기별 특징을분석할 수 있었다. 총 463명의 원장을 대상으로 하여 분석한 결과 다음과 같은몇 가지 특징을 시기별로 밝힐 수 있었다.
먼저 원장의 수와 재임 기간의 변화를 살필 수 있었다. 18세기에는 원장의 수가 급증하였음을 확인할 수 있었는데, 17세기와 비교하면 약 3배 이상 증가한 규모였다. 19세기에도 그러한 상황은 유지 확대되었다. 원장의 수에 반비례하여 재임 기간은 짧아졌다. 17세기에 2년 남짓이었던 원장의 평균 재임기간은 18세기와19세기에는 각각 5.4개월과 5.3개월로 짧아졌다. 이러한 현상은 원장 수를 늘려서 우호세력을 확대하려는 의도와 깊은 관련이 있었다.
다음은 원장의 거주지 분포에서도 상당한 변화가 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다.
17세기의 원장은 거의 모두 예안 지역 거주자였는데 18세기에는 그 비율이 56.6 %로 급격히 줄었다가 19세기에는 68%로 다시 늘어난 추세를 보였다. 18세기에는 안동을 위시한 경상도 북부 여러 지역 출신을 원장에 임명하였기 때문이다. 19 세기에 예안 출신이 다시 약간 증가한 것은 예안의 독점구조가 더 강화된 것이라기보다 예안의 진성이씨 집안에서 맡을 수밖에 없는 현실이 반영된 것이었다.
원장의 성씨별 분포 비교도 의미 있는 변화의 양상을 설명해줄 수 있는 주요한 잣대였다. 17세기 원장은 예안현의 유력 성씨인 광산김씨, 진성이씨, 봉화금씨순으로 많았으며, 세 성씨의 합이 전체의 약 82%를 차지하고 있었다. 18세기 원장 구성은 진성이씨와 광산김씨의 순으로 비중이 바뀌었으며, 세 성씨의 합은 약54%에 그쳐서 세 성씨의 독점 구조가 상당히 완화되었음을 알 수 있었다. 19세기의 경우는 진성이씨의 비중이 월등히 높아져서 약 64%를 차지하였다. 진성이씨가 감당할 수밖에 없던 현실을 보여주는 것이다. 원장 자리의 일부를 예안현의 수령이 감당한 것도 19세기에 나타난 특징이었다.
도산서원 원장에 취임할 당시의 경력에 대한 분석에서도 변화의 양상을 살필 수있었다. 17세기에는 전직 관료 출신 비중이 17세기에는 약 40%를 차지하였고, 18 세기에는 약 62%로 크게 늘었다가 19세기에는 약 32%로 급격히 줄어든 모습을보였다. 상대적으로 유학의 비중은 세 시기에 각각 34%, 27%, 58%로 변화하는모습을 보였다. 주변 지역의 명망가를 원장으로 영입하여 서원을 유지하려한 18세기의 모습과 원장 선임에 어려움이 있었던 19세기의 상황을 잘 보여주고 있다.
도산서원은 시대적 변화에 비교적 잘 대응하면서 운영되었다고 평가할 수 있는데, 대응 과정의 어려움을 원장 구성의 분석을 통해서 확인할 수 있었다. 분석의 결과 나타난 여러 특징들은 바로 도산서원 역사의 생생한 모습인 것이다.

영어초록

This study examined the characteristics of the heads of Dosan Seowon, a private Confucian academy, by analyzing those who served as the head of the academy over the past three hundred years of the late Joseon Dynasty. The head represented the academy and took responsibility for all of the affairs related with the academy. As he represented the academy, he was required to be equipped with knowledge and virtue suitable for the position and was given authority once elected. This study used Woniman(院任案) and a variety of old manuscripts as main materials and other historical records and materials.
The researcher divided the three hundred years of the late Joseon era into three one-century periods, then analyzed the characteristics of the heads of the Dosan Seowon in each period. Through the analysis of 463 heads of the academy, the following results were acquired.
To begin with, the number of the heads of Dosan Seowon and their service durations were examined. In the 18th century, their number increased sharply, about three times that of the figure in the 17th century. This trend continued and accelerated in the 19th century.
Meanwhile, the service durations of the heads shortened, forming a negative association with the number of the heads. In the 17th century, an average service duration reached two years. But the figure decreased to 5.4 and 5.3 months in the 18th and 19th century respectively. This was related to the intention to increase those who were favorable to the academy by producing more of them.
Next, a significant difference was detected in the head's residential district. In the 17th century, almost all heads of Dosan Seowon were the residents of Yean(禮安), but in the 18th century, the proportion of the heads from Yean dropped sharply to 56 percent. The figure, however, rose slightly to 68 percent in the 19th century. In the 18th century, those from Andong(安東) and other districts in the northern Gyeongsang region were appointed as the head of the academy. The sight increase of the heads from Yean in the 19th century reflected the reality in which one from the Jinseong Lee clan had to take the position not the enhanced dominance of those from Yean in the position.
The family names of the heads turned out to be an important yardstick of changes in the characteristics of the heads of Dosan Seowon.
Of the heads of the academy in the 17th century, ones from the Gwangsan Kim clan took the highest proportion, followed by ones from the Jinseong Lee clan and the Bongwha Geum clan. Those from the three influential clans in Yean-hyeon accounted for about 82 percent of the entire heads in the 17th century. In the 18th century, however, the Jinseong Lee clan produced more heads than the Gwangsan Kim clan, and the heads from the three clans accounted for about 54 percent, showing the dominance of three clans had weakened. In the 19th century, the proportion of the heads from the Jinseong Lee clan surged, recording about 64 percent.
This reflected the reality in which ones from the Jinseong Lee clan had taken the position. Another characteristic that newly appeared in the 19th century is that the governor of the Yean-hyeon played part of the role of the head of the academy.
It is appraised that Dosan Seowon was well managed, responding relatively well to generational change. This study looked into the difficulty with managing the academy amid those changes through the analysis of the composition of the heads. The various characteristics of the heads found from the analysis represent the vivid history of the academy.
