퇴율의 「心學圖」상 求放心 논의와 공감교육 문제 연구 (A study of correlation between discussions about ‘to seek for the lost mind(求放心)’ in ‘XinXueTu’(心學圖) and the education focused on empathy)

초록

본 논문은 목적은 ‘공감’능력의 함양을 위한 ‘감정교육’과 유학(儒學)에서 언급하는 ‘수양’과의 가능성을 고찰해보는 것이다. 감정에 대한 관심과 이를 이용한 교육은 최근 들어 활발하게 논의되고 있다. 감정은 타인을 이해하고 다양성을 존중하는 기본의 언어로써 중요한 위치를 담당한다.
유학에 있어 교육은 ‘수양론’으로 말할 수 있다. 수양에 있어 감정에 관한 논의는 퇴계와 율곡의 서신에서 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 율곡은 ‘구방심’(求放心)의 위치문제를 핵심으로 하는 근거를 들어서 「심학도(心學圖)」가 잘못된 그림이라고 비판한다. 퇴계는 이에 대하여 현재 자신의 감정을 이해하는 것이 학문의 핵심이라고 보아 「심학도(心學圖)」를 단계로 나누어 위치시키는 것을 비판한다. 「심학도(心學圖)」에 관한 퇴율의 논의는 이전까지 서신의 내용을 소개하는 정도로만 다루어졌고, 왜 그러한 이견(異見)이 생기게 되었는지는 연구되지 않았다. 이 논문에서는 그러한 논의가 생기게 된 원인을 감정과 공감 교육의 문제와 결부시켜 연구하였다.
현대사회와 같이 개체성과 다양성을 존중하는 시대에서는 타인에 대한 공감이 중요한 문제이다. 타인과의 공감을 위한 감정교육은 다양성에 대한 이해에 시사점을 준다. 하지만 우리의 일상적 삶에서는 다양성에 대한 존중이 깨어지는 경우가 자주 발생한다. 왜냐하면 다양성이 계약과 같이 타인을 인정하는 합의로 이해되고 있기 때문이다. 공감능력에 기반한 다원성의 인정은 합의가 아닌 ‘포용’으로써 중요한 의미를 지닌다.
본 논문은 감정 소외를 일으키는 학문과 수양의 문제점을 알아본다. 특히 감정에 관한 퇴계와 율곡의 논의에 주목함으로써 유학적 교육인 ‘수양’과 감정 교육의 접합 가능성을 알아볼 것이다. 이에 있어 도덕 감정에 대한 아담 스미스의 논의와 사회 심리학에서 말하는 공감의 실패에 대한 연구 성과를 참조할 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis aims to examine the correlation and possibilities between 'education focused on emotions' that has the purpose of 'empathy' and 'self-cultivation' which is said in Confucianism. It is lively discussed to concern about emotion and be educated through it. At this point, to say, that means that the theme of 'emotion' and 'empathy' have been avoided in the process of education regardless of Eastern and Western society. However, 'emotion' has crucial and significant status as the basic and standard language that have the characteristic of which one is able to understand the others and to respect the diversity.
Education in Confucianism used to mean 'self-cultivation'. It is clearly represented over the letters between Teo-Gye(退溪) and Yul-Gok(栗谷) to discuss and debate about the position of 'to seek for the lost mind'(求放心) on the picture, 'XinXueTu'(心學圖). Yul-Gok regarded that position as lower level in the process of self-cultivation, and thus, 'emotion' of individual has been alienated. Toe-Gye, on the other hand, saw it as understanding of one's present mind and set it as the center of his learning. Hence, the view such as Yul-Gok has the matter of emotion avoided.
In comtemporary society where one should respect the individualism and diversity, empathy for the others is important matters. Education focused on empathy gives us suggestions that help to comprehend the diversity. Yet, in our daily lives, it is often the case that the respect to the diversity is broken. Because the diversity is understood as the consensus to identify the others. Approving the diversity based on the ability of the empathy has the crucial meaning as the 'tolerance‘.
In this dissertation, I would like to investigate the problem of learning and self-cultivation that cause emotional estrangement. Especially, in having attention to the debate between Toe-Gye and Yul-Gok, I would seek to know the possibilities of joining between 'self-cultivation' as of Confucian education and education focused on empathy. In investigating this theme, the insight of moral-sentiment of Adam Smith and the failure of empathy referred in social psychology could be needed.
