≪DumenJilüe≫, published in 1845, holds the distinction of being the first-ever city guide in the Chinese language. This groundbreaking guidebook employed the concept of city gates as fundamental dividers within the Forbidden City, effectively segmenting the palace into discrete sections. The encompassing walls created a boundary that not only enhanced the interior's brilliance but also refracted light in a profound manner. Concurrently, the 13 categories of ≪RixiaJiuwen(日下舊聞)≫, first introduced in Beijing, positioned the imperial family within the public realm, offering detailed narratives of their lives. The gate served as the solitary passage connecting these two distinct realms while acting as a physical barrier separating the palace's inner sanctum from the bustling exterior. The area outside the gate teemed with people constantly traversing to and fro, transforming it into a vibrant hub for trade where vendors from across the city converged to sell their unique wares.
All editions of ≪DumenJilüe≫ follow the same format as ≪RixiaJiuwen≫, serving as a gateway inviting readers into a novel experience.
