실천의 측면에서 본 顔元과 陶行知의 교육사상 (The educational thought of Yan Yuan(顔元) and Tao Xingzhi(陶行知) from the viewpoint of practice)

초록

본고에서는 실천적 교육사상을 중시한 明末淸初의 顔元과 淸末에서 民國時代를 살았던 陶行知의 사상에 대하여 알아보았다. 이를 위해 이들의 성장 배경, 사상 형성 과정, 사상적 同異를 통해 변화의 시기를 겪고 있는 우리의 현실과 교육에 주는 교훈이 무엇인지 탐색해보았다. 안원과 도행지는 동란의 시기에 살면서 교육적으로 실천을 기초로 한 방법론을 제시하였다. 이들은 당시 사회와 국가의 衰落 원인을 性理學 중심의 교육과 봉건주의 교육에서 찾고, 이를 극복하기 위한 방법으로 안원은 習行을 도행지는 生活敎育을 제시하며, 이를 교육현장에 적용하였다. 이들은 교육에 있어 實踐을 중시하였다는 공통점이 존재하지만, 실천을 교육에 접목하는 과정과 방법에 있어서는 차이를 지닌다. 그러나 궁극적으로 안원이 교육에서 習行을 중시한 것이나 도행지가 생활을 중시한 것은 그 자체에 목적이 있는 것이 아니라 올바른 교육을 통해 당시 사회의 문제를 극복하려는 것에 목적이 있다. 올바른 교육의 본질은 일반적으로 추상적인 형태로 있지만 이것이 사용되어질 때는 구체적인 언어로 각자의 눈높이에 맞춰 드러나야 한다. 안원과 도행지는 이것을 당시 처한 사회적 상항에 근거하여 습행과 생활로 표현하였다. 안원과 도행지의 실천사상은 서로 괴리감이 존재하지만 우리가 당면해있는 현실에서 교육의 본질에 의거해 현실의 문제를 해결해야 함을 일깨워 주고 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, I examined the idea of two representative educators in China who emphasized practical educational thought. The one is Yan Yuan(顔元) who lived late Ming and early Qing dynasty and the other one is Tao Xingzhi(陶行知) who lived in the era from the late Qing dynasty to the Republic of China. For that purpose, I studied the background of their growth, ideological formation process, ideological similarity.And, with this, I wondered what lessons the ideas of two person gave to our life and education experiencing the changing times.
They lived in the era of the East and propose a methodology based on practice. A methodology based on educational practice. was presented by this two educator who lived in the period of turbulence. In this paper, their thoughts centered on practices is classified into three stages, examining the problem raising, concentrating problems and exploring solutions, and presenting their own solutions. They found the cause of decline of the society and the state in the education centered on Neo-confucianism and feudalism as the cause of the decline of society at the time. As a way to overcome this Yan Yuan(顔元) presented the methods of practice and practical philosophy(習行) and Tao Xingzhi(陶行知) presented life education which were applied to the site. Although there is a common point that these two educational thought emphasizes practice, there is a difference in the process and method adopted in education practice. Ultimately, Yan Yuan(顔元)’s emphasis on practical philosophy(習行) in education and Tao Xingzhi(陶行知)’s emphasis on life education does not have its own purpose, but rather attempts to overcome social problems of the day through appropriate education. The essence of proper education is generally abstract, but when it is used, it must be presented in concrete language at the level of the individual's eye. They expressed this as practical philosophy(習行) and life in education. Of course, the criteria are based on the situation they are in. Therefore, there is a sense of divergence even though their thoughts of education are classified in the same practical thought. In the end, the lesson they give us is not in the practice itself, but in the reality we are in, we have to solve the real problem based on the essence of education. And they reminded us that it is our burden to present it in a specific language according to the height of our own eyes.
