윌리엄 뎀스키의 ‘지적 설계’ 개념 비평 ― 불확정성, 복잡성, 특정성을 중심으로 (A Critical Reflection on William Dembski’s the Concept ‘Intelligent Design’ — Contingency, Complexity and Specification)

초록

이 글은 지적 설계론의 대표주자인 윌리엄 뎀스키의 지적 설계론에 대한 것이다. 특별히 그것은 지적 설계의 흔적(신호)을 탐지하기 위해 고안되었던 설계 탐지 방법에 관한 것이다. 그가 고안한 설계 탐지 방법 중에서 중요한 것은 2가지의 설명 필터인데, 필자는 그것을 각각 ‘확률 수준에 의한 설명 필터’와 ‘3가지 기준 원리에 의한 설명 필터’라고 명명했다. 한마디로 말해 설명 필터는 ‘법칙과 우연을 배제하고 설계의 흔적을 드러내는 방법’이라고 규정할 수 있다.
이 글이 본격적으로 다루고자 하는 것은 이 설명 필터에 대한 설명과 아울러 3단계로 이루어진 이 설명 필터의 각 단계의 개념적 장치라고 할 수 있는 ‘불확정성’, ‘복잡성’, ‘특정성’에 대한 것이다. 이 3가지 개념이야말로 뎀스키의 지적 설계론이 무엇을 의미하는지를 확실하게 알려주는 핵심 개념이라고 보기 때문이다.
첫째, 불확정성에 대한 논의에서는 불확정성 개념의 의미와 한계, 맹목적 불확정성과 유도된 불확정성이라는 2가지 불확정성의 차이, 폴라니와 뎀스키의 불확정성, 듀얼 시스템 등의 문제를 다루었다. 둘째, 복잡성에 대한 논의에서는 다양한 복잡성 개념들, 페일리의 복잡성, 뎀스키의 복잡성, 자기조직화의 복잡성 등에 대해 논의하였다. 또한 논쟁의 장에서는 카오스 이론의 자기조직화와 지적 설계론의 지적 존재, 뎀스키와 도킨스의 다양한 대립 문제를 다루었다. 셋째, 특정성에 대한 논의에서는 특정성이 가진 의미와 특성에 대한 분석, 설계 탐지가 가진 한계, 화석 기록을 둘러싼 특정성 문제에 관한 논쟁을 제시하였다.
결론적으로는 지적 설계의 설계 탐지 방법은 과학적, 신학적, 철학적인 다양한 문제들이 포함되어 있으므로, 지적 설계자들이 주장하는 대로 순수하게 과학적인 방법일 수만은 없다는 점을 지적했으며, 또한 과학적 방법임을 주장함에서 벗어나 형이상학적 주장임을 인정하고 철학과 신학의 장에 당당히 나설 것을 주문한다. 왜냐하면 학문은 검증과 비판을 먹고 자라기 때문이다.

영어초록

This article is about the intellectual design theory of William Dembski, the representative of intellectual design. Especially, it relates to the method of design detection designed to detect vestiges (signs, signatures, fingerprint) of intellectual activity. Among the methods of design detection he devised, two explanatory filters are important, and I named them “explanatory filters based on probability levels” and “explanatory filters based on three basic reference principles,” respectively. In a word, the explanatory filter can help decide a ‘how to exclude law, chance and reveal vestiges of design’.
What this article intends to deal with in earnest is not only the interpretation of this explanation filter, but also the conceptual devices of each stage of this explanation filter consisting of three stages, ‘contingency’, ‘complexity,’ and ‘specificity.’ These three concepts are considered key concepts that clearly tell us what Dembski’s intellectual design theory means.
First, in the discussion of contingency, I dealt with problems such as the meaning and limitation of the concept of contingency, the difference between two contingencies: the blind contingency and indirected contingency, the difference between Polanyi’s contingency and Dembski’s contingency, and dual system and so on.
Second, in the discussion of complexity, the various concepts of complexity, Paley’s complexity, Dembski’s complexity, and complexity in self-organization is discussed. And in the field on controversial arguments, the self-organization in Chaos theory, the intellectual existence in intellectual design theory, and various confrontation issues between Dembski and Dawkins is dealt with.
Third, in the discussion of Specification, the analysis of the meaning and characteristics of specificity, the limitations of design detection, and the debate on specificity issues around fossil records were presented.
In conclusion, I point out that the method of design detection in intellectual design contains a variety of scientific, theological, and philosophical problems, so it cannot be a purely scientific problem as ID theorists argue and it is a metaphysical argument. Therefore, I suggest that they come confidently into a place for debates in philosophy and theology. Because academics grow up with verification and criticism.
