초록

This article is part of endeavor to understand Ignatius of Loyola's spirituality in the context of the intellectual history of Christian spirituality. Focusing on the role of literary mediation played by Thomas à Kempis' De Imitatione Christi in the origin and formation of Ignatius' spirituality, it aims at determining as accurately as possible the essential nature of its influences. First, it reviews previous researches on the influences of literary sources on Ignatius' spirituality to attain a necessary background for our studies. Second, it focuses on Ignatius' total experience at Manresa where he came to know first time De Imitatione Christi and eventually to understand an apostolic life in the world as his purpose of life and consequently to draft the first redaction of The Spiritual Exercises. It considers Ignatius' The Autobiography and the essential elements of the first redaction of The Spiritual Exercises to discern the most important aspect of De Imitatione Christi's influences in relation to his own distinctive spirituality. It, then, studies the testimonies of early Jesuits on Ignatius' experience at Manresa to gather more evidences.
This article contends that De Imitatione Christi was the primary literary source that helped Ignatius to grasp the principle of discernment, and argues that, precisely in that regard, the book had significant bearings on Ignatius' discovery of his own way of spiritual life orientated to an active apostolic life in the world. It is fundamentally by way of divine teachings at Manresa that Ignatius was led to such an apostolic vision of life. Nonetheless, De Imitatione Christi was on the human level the most decisive help for him when he was struggling to grasp the meaning of the inner and spiritual experiences that he had at Manresa.
The article concludes by suggesting that there are textual evidences that support and corroborate the thesis, and states the necessity of a separate, complementary study.
