초록

본 연구는 현시대의 대표적 컨템포러리 안무가 중 하나인 아크람 칸(Akram Khan)의 대표작 <데쉬(Desh)>의 안무 및 표현의 특징에 대한 탐구와 이와 연관된 문화 해석적 의미를 연구하고자 한다. 이는 세계적인 안무가의 작업을 세부적으로 분석하고 그 안무 특성에 대해 문화 인류학적 해석을 시도하는 작업으로, 후기 구조주의적 해체와 창의적 재창조를 통한 안무 창작법 개발 및 문화 연구에 있어 창의적 시각과 실용적 지식을 제공해 줄 것이다. 구체적 분석을 위해 이미영이 접근한 세 가지 범주—내용적 메시지, 구성적 움직임, 시각적 이미지—의 춤 양식적 분석 기준에 의거하여 연구를 진행하였고 그 특성과 의미적 해석은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 메시지 면에서는 고국이라는 뜻의 벵골어인 제목 ‘데쉬’가 내포하듯 방글라데시 영국인 이민자 2세인 아크람 칸 자신의 겪는 혼란스러운 정체성을 중심으로 인종, 국가, 문화 간의 엇갈린 시각과 갈등에 대한 현시대의 사회적 이슈를 담고 있다. 8개의 에피소드로 이어지는 치밀한 장면구성과 연기와 춤, 동화적 상상력과 신화적 스토리텔링을 엮어 위트있고 설득력 있게 전달하였다. 둘째, 움직임의 측면에서 칸은 <데쉬>의 창조적 이미지를 일으킬 수 있는 모든 가능성에 접근했다. 이에 카탁과 현대무용을 결합시킨 자신만의 몸 언어를 사용하고, 춤 외적 신체 표현 기법으로 가능한 연기, 인형극 등을 함께 활용해 융복합 퍼포먼스를 구현했다. 다양한 문화와 춤의 표현 기술을 경험한 그의 혼종적 몸이 창출하는 융합적 춤 어휘를 창출하고, 춤과 연기, 인형극을 넘나들며 자연스러운 조화를 이루는 새로운 공연양식을 형성했다. 셋째, 이미지의 측면에서 칸은 디지털 애니메이션, 조명, 무대장치 등의 다 무대예술 분야와 창조적 협업을 이루어 더할 나위 없이 장면들로 강렬한 미장센을 이루었다. 특히, 칸의 상상 속 방글라데시를 신비로운 환상의 세계로 아름답게 이미지화한 애니메이션과 무대를 가득 메운 장관으로 펼쳐진 무대장치의 활용은 칸의 이야기가 현실과 가상세계를 넘나들며 초월적 차원의 환상성을 이루고 모국을 아름다운 이미지로 재구성하는 것을 돕는다.
<데쉬>는 명확한 주제와 탄탄한 스토리 라인, 구체적이고 치밀한 장면구성, 장르적 제약을 벗어나 사실적 모방과 추상적 표현을 넘나드는 자유로운 움직임 표현과 동서양 문화와 현실과 가상세계의 신비로움이 공존하고, 이 모든 것이 조화로운 시각화를 이루는 총체예술로 대변된다.
다양하고 종합적인 표현 기법을 통해 칸이 추구하는 예술적 사고와 창의적 안무의 핵심적 개념은 결국 자유로운 해석과 해체와 절충적 조화와 융합의 개념이다. 이것은 그의 삶을 둘러싼 이중적 문화배경과 디아스포라적 정체성에 대한 경험으로 얻어진 다양성을 반영한 ‘융합’이다. 문화 인류학적으로 주체와 타자의 중간적 입장에 속하는 칸의 정체성은 동서양 문화의 중간적 적절한 접합점을 자연스럽게 몸 안으로 체화시켜 표현한다. 이렇게 창조된 칸은 작품은 내용, 형식, 기법 면에서 자신의 독특한 문화배경을 기반으로 한 현명하고 본능적인 본인만의 융합을 시도한 것이고 그가 선택한 융합은 다층적이고 협력적인 관계들 사이에 새로운 공연 언어 창출하며 궁극의 ‘융합적 퍼포먼스’를 완성한 것이다.

영어초록

This study aims to explore the choreographic and expressive features of Akram Khan’s <Desh>, along with the cultural analytical implications associated with them. This is a detailed analysis of a world-renowned choreographer’s work and a cultural anthropological interpretation of its choreographic characteristics, which will provide creative perspectives and practical knowledge in the development of choreographic methods and cultural studies through post-structuralist deconstruction. As a specific research approach, the analysis on <Desh> was conducted in terms of the three categories of content message, compositional movement, and visual image previously applied in Mi-young Lee’s study, and the characteristics are as follows.
First, in terms of message, the title ‘Desh’, which means homeland in Bengali, addresses contemporary social issues of conflicting views and conflicts between races, nations, and cultures, centered on Akram Khan’s own confused identity as a second-generation Bangladeshi British immigrant. Through eight episodes of intricate scene composition, acting and dance, fairy tale imagination and mythological storytelling are wittily and eloquently conveyed. Second, in terms of movement, Khan approached all possibilities to create the creative image of <Desh>, using his own body language that combines Kathak and contemporary dance, and utilizing acting and puppetry as possible non-dance body expression techniques to create a fusion performance. His hybrid body, having experienced various cultures and dance expressive techniques, created a fusion dance vocabulary and formed a new performance style that seamlessly blended dance, acting, and puppetry. Third, in terms of imagery, Khan creatively collaborated with multi-disciplinary theater disciplines such as digital animation, lighting, and staging to create intense mise-en-scene. In particular, the use of animation that beautifully imagines Bangladesh in Khan's imagination as a mystical fantasy world and the use of spectacular staging that fills the stage help Khan’s story to achieve a transcendent level of fantasy, moving between the real and virtual worlds and reconstructing his homeland in a beautiful image.
<Desh> is represented as a total art with a clear theme and a solid storyline, specific and detailed scene composition, free movement expression that breaks away from genre constraints and crosses between realistic imitation and abstract expression, and the coexistence of Eastern and Western cultures and the mystery of the real and virtual worlds, all of which form a harmonious visualization.
The core concepts of artistic thought and creative choreography that Khan pursues through his diverse and comprehensive expression techniques are ultimately those of free interpretation and deconstruction, eclectic harmony and fusion. This is a ‘fusion’ that reflects the diversity of the dual cultural backgrounds surrounding his life and his experience of diasporic identity. As a cultural anthropologist, Khan’s identity is an intermediate position between the inner and the outer, and he embodies and expresses the appropriate junction between Eastern and Western cultures. In this way, Khan has wisely and instinctively created his fusion style based on his unique cultural background in terms of content, form, and technique, and his chosen fusion has created a new performance language between multilayered and collaborative relationships, completing the ultimate ‘fusion performance’.
