데오토코스에 대한개혁신학적 평가 (A Reformed Assessment of the Term “Theotokos”)

초록

자유주의 신학자들은 고대 기독론을 결정한 공의회를 마리아 숭배와 신화와 연결시켜 이해하려고 하였다. 이러한 이해로 인해 그들은 역사 안에서 기독론적인 결정을 마리아 숭배와 신화 연결된 로마교회의 역사로서 고려했고, 교회의 신학과 역사를 왜곡하는 일이 발생하였다. 그 중에 가장 심각한 오류는 데오토코스를 마리아 숭배와 신화와의 혼합으로 여기려는 것이었다. 이러한 신학적 이해는 결코 올바른 것이 아니다. 궁극적으로 기독교의 서고 넘어짐의 교리를 파괴하여 기독교의 존립을 부정하는 것이다.
첫째, 데오토코스 문제는 안디옥과 알렉산드리아 신학의 대립 때문이었다. 알렉산드리아 교구와 안디옥의 교구는 가장 중심된 비잔틴의 교구였다. 그러나 삼위일체 논쟁이 주로 알렉산드리아(아리우스, 아폴리나리우스) 출신들로부터 이루어진 결과로 많은 안디옥 출신들이 알렉산드리아 교회의 주장 중에 데오토코스에 대한 이해를 의심하고 있었다. 그리고 서로 대립했다. 그러나 디오도레와 데오도레로 대표되는 안디옥 신학 역시 기독론에 문제를 가지고 있었다. 그리고 논쟁의 중심에 있는 네스토리우스에게 영향을 끼쳤다. 이들의 신학은 ‘내주’라는 개념 속에서 그리스도가 두 위격이 연합하여 한 위격을 이루었다고 생각하였고, 후에 이단으로 정죄되었다.
둘째, 기독론 논쟁과 관련된 중요한 용어들이 있다. 우선적으로 안디옥이 주장했던 안드로포토코스, 네스토리우스가 중재하려고 했던 크리스토토코스, 마지막으로 알렉산들이아 교회가 유지하고 있었던 데오토코코스이다.
1) 이 용어들은 기본적으로 마리아에 대한 용어가 아니라, 그리스도의 신성과 연관된 것이다. 우선 안드로포토코스는 마리아가 품은 존재가 인간이라고 말한다. 그래서 디오도레와 데오도레의 신학에서처럼 주로 ‘내주’ 사상에 기초하여서 두 그리스도를 지시하게 된다. 두번째로는 크리스토토코스이다. 이 용어는 네스토리우스가 표면적으로 안디옥과 알렉산드리아를 중재하기위해 제시한 용어였다. 그러나 네스토리우스 역시, 내주의 교리 속에서, 두 그리스도를 말하는 것외에 다른 것이 아니었다. 마지막으로 데오토코스이다. 공의회는 지속적으로 데오토코스를 정통적인 교리를 인정하였다(431/433(화해신조)/451). 그럼에도 불구하고 끊임없는 왜곡이 일어났다.
2) 이 왜곡은 두 가지 측면에서 발생한 것이다. 하나는 에베소 공의회를 마리아 숭배를 결정한 회의로 왜곡하였다. 이로 인해 마치 교회가 처음부터 마리아 숭배를 지지 한 것처럼 혼동하도록 했고, 마리아 숭배 중심에 데오토코스를 세워놓았다. 두 번째 왜곡은 데오토코스를 이방의 신화와 연결시켜서 설명하려고 하였다. 이는 자유주의자들의 왜곡이었다. 이들은 동정녀 탄생을 사실로 보지 않고, 신화로 보았기 때문에, 데오토코스 역시 신화이며, 따라서 거부하였다.
결론적으로 데오토코스는 마리아가 아닌 그리스도의 신성에 대한 문제였다. 개혁신학은 공의회를 따른다. 특별히 개혁신학자들(칼빈/바빙크)은 네스토리우스를 정죄하였다. 그러나 자금에 혹자는 네스토리우스와 그의 이해를 따른다. 그러나 이는 교회의 서고 넘어짐의 교리를 파괴하는 것이다.

영어초록

Liberal Theologians try to connect the decision of ancient ecumenical Council to the Mariolatry and Myth. On the basis of this understanding, they regarded all Christological decisions in history as Roman church’s history connected with Mariolatry and Myth. These theologians distort the Theology and the history of Church. The most serious Christological err is the understanding of the term Theotokos, which is wrongly regarded as mixtures between Mariolatry and Myth. However, this theological idea is not just.
Firstly, the term Theotokos is one of contradictions between theologies of Alexandria and Antioch. Both have authoritative positions in Byzantine Church. However, the church of Antioch doubted Alexandrian concept Theotokos as heretical, for the controversy surrounding the doctrine of the Trinity was caused by two Alexandrians (Arius and Apollinarius). So, they confronted each other. Theology of Antioch presented by Diodore of Tarsus and Theodore of Mopsuestia had also a heretical concept as inhabitatio surrounding Christology. They influenced Nestorius, following the concept inhabitatio, to be at the heart of Christological controversy in A.D 431. Antioch theologians regarded Christ as one person being the union of two persons on the basis of the concept inhabitatio, which implies that two persons in Christ are still held. They were condemned as heretics.
Secondly, the controversy surrounding Christology connected closely with several concepts. Above all, there is Anthropotokos which implies a bearer of man, was used by Antioch, second is Christotokos, as a bearer of Christ, which was superficially regarded as intercession between Churches of Alexandria and Antioch by Nestorius. Finally, Theotokos, a bearer of God, which generally was the orthodoxy term in eastern church.
1) These ideas are basically not connected with Mary, but with the deity of Christ. So, Anthropotokos is indicative of being, whom Mary conceived, as a human being. So as Diodore and Theodore held, on the basis of idea of inhabitatio, it is indicative of two Christs. Next is the Nestorian term Christotokos, a bearer of Christ, in which Nestorius held nothing other than two Christs on the basis of the understanding of inhabitatio. Finally, Theotokos which was approved as orthodoxy doctrine by ecumenical Council. In spite of it, the Nestorian distortion of the term Theotokos, as a term for Mary, not for Christ’s deity, has been considered legitimate.
2) Two distortions of the term Thetokos on basis of Mariology occur as follow. One distortion which the Ephesian Council in 431 approved officially was the concept of Mariolatry. It made people misunderstood that term Theotokos caused Mariolatry from the beginning. The other is that the Theotokos was on the basis of other religious myth. It was the concept which liberal theologians’ distorted in the concerning the Theotokos as Myth. They didn't believe virgin birth as historical fact, but as myth. Therefore, they identified Theotokos with Myth, and rejected it.
This paper concludes that the concept of Theotokos is not about Mary’s deity, but about the deity of Christ. Reformed theology follows the ecumenical council’s direction on this matter. Reformed theologians (Calvin and Bavinck) condemned Nestorianism. However, there are currently some who follow Nestorius’ understanding on the two persons of Christ. However, to deny the term Theotokos by following Nestorius is to destroy the doctrine of standing and falling of the church.
