중세 영국 로맨스에 나타난 왕비의 회임의 의미: 『고써 경』, 『애덜스턴』, 『투르 백작』을 중심으로 (The Meaning of a Queen’s Pregnancy in Middle English Romances: Sir Gowther, Athelston and Erle of Tolous)

초록

The heroines of Sir Gowther, Athelston and Erle of Tolous are pregnant queens. The pregnant queen in these romances, though situated in a respectively different context, is necessarily involved in the inheritance of kingdom and the succession of kingship as are the queens having lived in medieval history. The aim of this paper is to analyze the role and the meaning of a queen’s pregnancy in these romances and to reveal the patriarchical ideological constraints operating in these romances, which try to suppress, disguise, mystify or silence the power of a queen who has given birth to a future king.
The cognomen hero in the three romances shares it in common that he succeeds to the throne although he is not a son of the late ruler, while the hero of the romances dealing with inheritance is, in most cases, a son of the former king, separated from his family and deprived of his kingdom at first and reunited to his family and regaining his kingdom and kingship in the end. The three romances reveal that the hero manages to establish the legitimacy of his succession through private ties with a pregnant queen, whether she is his mother or spouse, whose life is presented to be assimilated to Marian images or, at least, to be formulated into saintly qualities. The Duchess, Sir Gowther’s mother is presented to belong to the clan of Mater Dolorosa, Edyff who replaces the miscarrying queen of Athelston through the production of a king’s heir is likened to a saint who goes through a tormenting test to prove her innocence, and Beaulybon is described being next to Mary in beauty, virtue and wisdom. The sanctified queens become the matrices on the basis of which the heroes lacking in royal blood can justify their royalty and start their own dynasty with legitimacy claims. The remarriages of a queen dowager also contribute to the establishment of the authority of a newly crowned king. A queen’s conception and production of royal heirs play the role of a living evidence of a king's achievements.
The queen is, however, marginalized and silenced in spite of her contribution to the establishment of regal power when she finishes the job of facilitation of peaceful succession. These romances in which the pregnant queen’s character and royal background are presented to be of greater importance than, or no less than the hero’s legitimate claims reflect the socio-politico-economic changes in the fourteenth century England experienced by both the nobility and the newly-rising gentry.
