‘덜’이 쓰인 차등 비교 구문의 특성 (On the Characteristics of the Comparative construction with ‘deol’)

초록

본고에서는 비교 구문의 연구에서 많이 다루어지지 않았던 ‘덜’이 쓰인 차등 비교 구문의 특징을 살피고, 그에 쓰인 비교 대상들이 서술어의 내용과 관련된 속성을 지님을 밝혔다. 한 대상의 성질이나 특성을 다른 대상과 관련지어 파악하는 비교의 의미가 언어적으로 표현된 비교 구문 중에서 차등 비교 구문은 비교 대상들이 문장에 쓰인 정도성 표현과 관련하여 정도의 차이를 가짐을 나타낸다는 점에서 동등 비교 구문과 차이를 갖는다. 차등 비교 구문은 일반적으로 우세 비교 구문과 열세 비교 구문의 명칭으로 구별되어 불리는데, 이들은 차등 비교 구문의 핵심적 의미를 표현하는 ‘보다’에 ‘더’가 결합하는지 아니면 ‘덜’이 결합하는지에 따라 구분된다. ‘덜’이 쓰인 열세 비교 구문은 비교 중심 대상과 비교 기준 대상의 관계에서 비교 중심 대상이 비교 기준 대상보다 열세에 있다는 점에서 이와는 반대의 관계를 표현하는 ‘더’가 쓰인 우세 비교 구문과 구별된다. 기존의 연구에서는 ‘더’를 포함하는 차등 비교 구문에 중점을 두었고, ‘덜’의 쓰임은 깊이 있게 논의되지 않았다. 본고에서는 ‘더’와 ‘덜’이 쓰인 차등 비교 구문의 특성을 고찰하며, ‘덜’이 쓰인 비교 구문이 갖는 차이점을 밝혔다.
본고에서 ‘덜’이 쓰인 열세 비교 구문의 특성의 파악하는 과정은 비교 기준 대상의 특징을 파악하고, 이를 바탕으로 비교 중심 대상의 특징을 파악하는 단계로 이루어졌다. 먼저 차등 비교 구문에 쓰이는 ‘보다는’과 ‘보다도’가 그와 결합하는 비교 기준 대상의 속성에 영향을 미침을 밝힌 선행 연구를 바탕으로, ‘덜’이 쓰인 열세 비교 구문에서는 비교 기준 대상이 항상 서술어의 내용과 관련된 속성을 지님을 보였다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 두 개의 비교 구문이 결합하여 비교 중심 대상의 비교 범위를 제한하는 표현들을 살피면서 비교 중심 대상 또한 비교 구문에 쓰인 서술어의 내용과 관련된 속성을 지닌다는 것을 밝혔다. 이는 ‘덜’이 쓰인 열세 비교 구문에서는 서술어의 내용과 관련된 속성을 지니는 것만이 비교 대상으로 쓰인다는 것인데, 이런 관찰에 바탕을 두고 ‘덜’이 쓰인 차등 비교 구문이 그에 쓰인 서술어와 관련된 정도성의 척도에서 그 서술어의 내용과 관련된 속성을 지님을 규정하는 일정한 기준을 초과하는 비교 대상들 사이의 정도 차이를 나타냄을 주장했다.

영어초록

This article claimed that in the inferior construction, comparative objects have the property which is related to the meaning of gradable predicate used in it, while examining the characteristics of the comparative construction with ‘deol’. The construction in which two objects are compared with respect to the degree related to gradable predicates is in general classified into the equative and comparative construction. The comparative construction expresses that the comparative objects have difference in the degree related to the gradable predicate. The comparative construction is classified into the superior and inferior comparative in which the comparative center is superior than the comparative standard and the comparative standard is superior than the comparative center in degree respectively. Compared with the equative construction, the core meaning of comparative construction is expressed by ‘boda’, and the difference between the superior and inferior comparatives is related to the use of ‘deo’ and ‘deol’. In the previous researches, the characteristics of inferior comparative have not discussed much, being compared with the superior comparative. Thus, this article was intended to focus on the function of ‘deol’, while investigating the different characteristics of the comparative constructions with ‘deo’ and ‘deol’.
To reveal the characteristics of inferior comparative with ‘deol’, this research examined the property of comparative standard first, and with the result, it focused on examining the property of comparative center. Based on the previous research claiming that the use of ‘boda-neun’ and ‘boda-do’ have effect on the property of the comparative standard combined with them, this paper has shown that the comparative standard in the inferior comparative has the property related to the meaning of gradable predicate. Furthermore, it has shown that the comparative center in the inferior comparative also has the property related to the meaning of gradable predicate while investigating the characteristics of the sentences expressing the limits of comparing range for the comparative center by combining two comparative construction. As a result, this research reveals that in the inferior comparative, only the comparative objects which have the property related to the meaning of gradable predicates can be used. This result points out that the inferior comparative with ‘deol’ expresses the difference between degrees of the comparative center and comparative standard, which are understood as exceeding a certain standard on a related scale with which the objects are determined to have the property related to the meaning of gradable predicates.
