초록

국내 영상제작 시장에서 기획(pre-production)의 중요성은 항상 대두되는 부분이다. 왜냐하면 기획에서 아이디어와 콘셉트, 스토리, 마케팅 등 가장 핵심적인 부분들이 결정되고, 이는 곧 결과물의 성패로 이어지 기 때문이다. 좁은 내수시장과 국제적인 경쟁 속에서 기획 분야의 전문성 없이 프로덕션으로 경쟁한다는 것은 어불성설(語不成說)일 것이다. 하지만 정작 어떤 식의 비주얼과 스토리텔링으로 제작되어질지를 확인하는 기획에 대한 검증 과정은 대부분 스토리보드나 이미지 보드 등 기초적인 단계에서 머물고 있어, 정확한 검증이 이루어지기 힘든 실정이다. 국내 영상제작 시장의 규모와 구조, 기획 단계에 대한 비용투자 어려움, 검증 방법의 부재 등의 이유로 기획에 대한 검증이 쉽지 않다는 의견도 지배적이다.
미국 영상제작 시장에서는 기획 단계에서 충분한 시간, 비용투자와 여러 가지 검증 방법을 통해 아이디어를 거의 완벽하게 검증하고 있다. 괄목할 만한 검증 방법에는 프리비즈(previsualiztion)가 있다. 최신 컴퓨터 그래픽 기술을 이용하는 프리비즈는 단기간에 저비용으로 제작자와 클라이언트들이 원하는 비주얼을 최종 결과물에 최대한 가깝게 구현하는 것을 목표로 한다. 고품질 프리비즈는 기획물에 대한 검증, 시장성 타진뿐만 아니라 프로덕션 단계의 시행착오를 줄이는 가이드라인으로 쓰여, 프로덕션의 품질(quality) 향상, 제작비 절감에 기여하고 있다. 이러한 기획에 대한 확실한 검증과정들이 미국의 영상제작산업을 세계 최고 레벨로 올려놨다.
본 연구는 미국 영상제작 시장에서 제작되고 있는 프리비즈의 동향과 프리비즈 국내 영상 기획 시장에서의 필요성, 기대효과를 연구하고자 한다.

영어초록

The importance of pre-production is already well-known throughout Korea's domestic motion picture production industry. The success of the core parts of the whole production process (concept, idea, story, and marketing) can be determined via pre-production. This can be seen in both domestic and international commercial and film competitions, as well as project proposals, where it is impossible to be competitive without the specialty of pre-production. However, gaining approval for an idea from the client for a story as well as the final look for the production is still done using basic, dated methods such as storyboards and imageboards. As a result, it becomes difficult to check if an idea is good enough. The given reason is that because the scale of domestic productions is small, there is insufficient budget to develop an idea more thoroughly.
In the States, in order to gain approval for and develop an idea, a production company will invest the required time and money for the production of a moving picture, be it an animation, a film or a commercial. American companies also use the 'Previsualization' process to gain approval for an idea before production begins. Previsualization is the process of making a preview footage which is of almost the same quality as the final result. This is achieved by using cutting edge computer graphic technology.
Previsualization takes the guesswork out of the production process, since it allows the client and everyone involved in the production to visualize what the final product will look like after main-production. Making a high-quality "previz" has many advantages. It not only significantly lowers the cost of main-production, but previsualization also guarantees the quality of the final result, as it can also be used as a guide line for the main-production. Thus, previsualization has helped put the American motion picture production industry at the top.
This study will research the trend of previsualization in the States. Furthermore, the necessity and expected results of using previsualization in Korea's motion picture industry will be analyzed.
