공주 홍장삼 문양에 관한 연구- 복온공주 홍장삼과 덕온공주 홍장삼 수본을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Patterns of Embroidered Hongjangsam - Focusing on Princess Bokon’s Hongjangsam and Princess Deokon’s Hongjangsam Embroidery Pattern)

초록

본 연구는 자수로 장식된 전통 혼례복식인 홍장삼에 표현된 문양의 유래와 의미를 밝힌 것으로, 복온공주홍장삼과 덕온공주 홍장삼 수본을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 두 유물에 표현된 문양은 꽃나무 8종과 풀꽃 8종, 보문(寶紋) 14종, 복합보문 11종 및 접문(蝶紋)과 봉문(鳳紋)은 각 1종, 자연문은 괴석, 삼산, 물결 등이다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다.
화초문은 자손번영, 신부의 용모와 자질, 장수, 관운의 형통 등을 상징한다. 화초문 중 여지, 추해당, 추모란, 패랭이 문양은 복온공주 홍장삼에만 표현되었으며 파련화, 목련문양은 덕온공주 홍장삼 수본에만 나타난다. 보문은 인생에서 바라는 염원이 표현된 길상문이다. 파련화 형태의 보개는 꼭지 부위에 보문이 결합되어복합보문으로 구분하였으며, 복온공주 홍장삼에만 11종이 보인다. 반면 덕온공주 홍장삼 수본에는 복온공주홍장삼과 달리 8종의 보문이 모두 한쌍으로 표현되었다. 봉황문과 자연문은 복온공주 홍장삼에는 보이지 않는 문양 구성으로 20세기 전기에 공주의 홍장삼이 보수되면서 폐기되었을 가능성도 있다. 봉황문은 부부 금슬과 자손 번영을 상징하며, 한 쌍이 표현되었는데 형태는 화려한 수컷인 봉으로 표현되었다. 자연문은 영원과 자연의 근원을 뜻하며 괴석, 삼산, 물결 등이 함께 표현된 것은 음양의 조화를 의미했다. 두 공주 유물의문양은 봉황문과 자연문을 제외하면 유사한 구성을 보이지만 복온공주 홍장삼은 문양이 복잡하고 조밀하게보인다. 반면 덕온공주 홍장삼 수본은 조형적으로 단순하게 표현되어 복온공주 홍장삼의 문양보다 고식(古 式)으로 판단된다.
문양은 인생에서 성취되기를 바라는 삶의 가치관이 투영된 창조적인 결과이면서 오랜 기간 전승되어 내려온 미의식의 소산이다. 공주 홍장삼에 표현된 문양은 “인륜의 근본이며 만세의 시작”인 혼례를 축복하고 자손번영, 영원한 부부의 사랑, 건강과 장수, 만사형통 등 현세의 기복적인 세계관이 내포되었다.

영어초록

This study investigated the origin and meaning of the patterns expressed in Hongjangsam(紅長衫), a traditional wedding dress decorated with embroidery, focusing on the embroidery of Princess Bokon and Princess Deokon. The patterns expressed on the two relics were classified into flowers, treasures, butterflies, animals, and nature patterns. The patterns expressed on the two relics included 8 types of flower trees and 8 types of grass flowers. Additionally, 14 types of treasure patterns, 11 types of complex treasure pattern, 1 type each of butterfly and phoenix patterns, and natural patterns(strange rocks, three mountains, waves) are confirmed.
The flower pattern symbolizes the prosperity of descendants, the appearance and qualities of the bride, longevity, and good fortune. Among the flower patterns, the patterns of litchi, begonia, chumolan (秋牡丹), and dianthus are expressed only on the Princess Bokon’s Hongjangsam, and the Paryeonhwa (芭蓮花), magnolia pattern appears only on the Princess Deokon’s Hongjangsam embroidery pattern.
The treasure patterns are an auspicious pattern that expresses one’s wishes in life. It was divided into complex treasure pattern and single treasure pattern, in which treasure pattern was combined at the top of the bogie expressed in Paryeonhwa (芭蓮花). There are 11 species of Princess Bokon’s Hongjangsam alone. On the other hand, in Princess Deokon’s Hongjangsam embroidery, unlike Princess Bokon’s Hongjangsam, all eight types of treasure patterns are expressed as a pair. The phoenix and natural patterns are patterns that are not visible on Princess Bokon’s Hongjangsam, and it is possible that they were discarded when the Princess Bokon’s Hongjangsam was repaired in the early 20th century. The phoenix pattern usually appears as a pair, but it is usually depicted as a colorful male, so it is also referred to as a phoenix. It symbolizes the prosperity of the couple and their offspring. The natural gate signifies eternity and the source of nature, and the expression of waves, strange stones, and three mountains together signifies the harmony of Yinyang(陰陽).
The patterns of the two princess relics have similar compositions except for the phoenix and natural patterns, but the patterns of Princess Bok-on’s red jangsam appear to be complex and dense. On the other hand, the pattern of Princess Deokon’s Hongjangsam is expressed in a simpler form and is believed to be older than the pattern of Princess Bokon’s Hongjangsam.
Patterns are the creative result of reflecting the values of life that one wishes to achieve in life and are also the product of a sense of aesthetics that has been passed down for a long time. Therefore, it is confirmed that the pattern expressed on the Hongjangsam blesses the wedding, which is “the basis of humanity and the beginning of all ages,” and is decorated with a world view of the wishing good luck in this life, such as the prosperity of offspring, eternal love between couples, health, and longevity.
