宜庵 安德文의 學問精神과 處世方式 (Uiam Ahn Deok-Mun's Academic Spirit and Conduct of Life Approach)

초록

이 글은 조선후기 의령에 살던 安德文(1747-1811)의 학문정신과 처세방식을 탐구한 것으로, 그 요지는 다음과 같다.
안덕문은 과거를 포기하면서 「謝科文」을 지었는데, 士人의 본분을 새롭게 각성하며 성현의 학문을 지향하고자 하는 인식을 드러내고 있다. 그는 과거를 포기한 뒤 영남의 학문이 자기 학파의 설만을 추종하는 편협한 사고에 빠져 있는 것을 직시하고서, 李彦迪·李滉·曺植의 학문을 함께 추숭하는 통섭의 영남학을 추구하였다. 그리하여 이 세 선생을 모신 옥산서원·도산서원·덕산서원을 三山書院이라 칭하고, 이들의 학문을 모두 공자와 주자의 正脈으로 보았다.
안덕문의 학문지향은 세 가지로 정리된다. 첫째, 그는 范浚의 「心箴」과 陳柏의 「夙興夜寐箴」을 가슴속에 새기는 공부를 하였으며, 「太極圖」·「誠幾圖」·「心學圖」를 걸어두고 심성수양하는 공부에 치중하였으며, 창가에 敬·義 두 자를 써 붙여놓고 直內義方의 공부에 주력하였다. 이는 남명학과 맞닿아 있다. 둘째, 그의 「明明德箴」과 「靈臺序」를 보면 명명덕을 통한 도덕적 주체 확립을 학문의 근본으로 삼은 것을 알 수 있다. 이러한 정신지향은 남명의 「신명사도」와 맞닿아 있다. 셋째, 그의 「九容箴」을 보면 일상에서 실천해야 할 조목을 정해 이를 실천하려 한 것을 알 수 있는데, 이런 학문정신도 남명학에 연원을 두고 있다.
안덕문은 이런 지향을 하며 생의 후반기를 보냈는데, 그 실천의 핵심이 日常에서 宜를 찾는 것이었다. 이는 「宜庵序」를 통해 확인할 수 있는데, 일상에서 마땅함을 찾는 삶의 방식이다. 이러한 그의 처세방식을 단적으로 보여주는 것이 교육기관인 興學堂 창건을 주도하고 문중서당인 高山齋를 중수하여 고을의 학문을 일으키고자 한 점, 민생을 살리기 위해 산림을 보호하고 상업을 억제하며 社倉의 개선방안을 강구한 점, 고을의 名勝에 대한 의미를 적극적으로 발굴하여 문화적 자긍심을 갖게 한 점 등을 들 수 있다.
이러한 안덕문의 학문정신과 처세방식은 다음과 같은 사상사적 의의가 있다. 첫째, 안덕문은 자기학파의 설만을 추종하는 조선후기 영남학계에 회재학·퇴계학·남명학을 함께 추존하는 통섭의 학문을 제시하였다. 이러한 학문정신은 후대 경상우도 학자들에게 큰 영향을 끼쳐 남명학과 퇴계학을 함께 추숭하는 인식을 갖게 하였다. 둘째, 안덕문의 학문정신이 남명학의 심성수양과 실천을 근간으로 하고 있는 점에서 남명학이 경상우도에 면면이 전승된 것을 확인하게 해준다. 셋째, 안덕문은 자신의 학문정신을 일상에서 실천하기 위해 자신의 마땅함[宜]을 찾았고, 그것을 자신이 처한 현실세계에 구현하려 노력했다. 이러한 처세방식이 정치권력으로부터 멀어진 향촌 지식인의 사회적 역할이라는 점에 그 의미가 있다.

영어초록

This paper presents an investigation into the academic spirit and conduct of life approach of Ahn Deok-mun(1747-1811) that lived in Uiryeong in the latter part of Joseon. The main points were as follows: Ahn gave up the highest-level state exam at the age of 41 and wrote An Apology, which depicts his new awakening to his duties and his orientation toward the studies of saints. After giving up the state exam, he directly recognized that the scholars of Yeongnam were trapped in narrow-minded thinking by following only the theories of their schools and sought after the Yeongnam studies of consilience to worship the studies of Lee Eon-jeok, Lee Hwang, and Jo Shik together. He called the Oksan, Dosan, and Deoksan Seowon, which held a religious service for the three scholars, Samsan Seowon and stated that the studies of the three scholars were in the right line of Confucius and Zhu Xi.
Ahn had three major academic orientations: first, he studied to engrave Simjam by Beomjun and Sukheungyamaejam by Jinbaek in his mind, concentrated on the cultivation of his mentality by hanging the pictures of "Taegeukdo," "Seonggido," and "Simhakdo," and was devoted to the study of Jiknaeuibang by pasting two letters Gyeong and Ui by the window. His study was in line with Nammyeong studies. Secondly, his Myeongmyeongdeokjam and Yeongdaeseo tell that he found the root of his studies in the establishment of a moral subject. This spiritual orientation of his was in line with Nammyeong's Sinmyeongsado· Finally, his Guyongjam indicates that he made a list of things he would practice in daily life and tried to practice them. This academic spirit of his was rooted in Nammyeong studies.
Ahn spent the latter part of his life by pursuing these orientations. The core of his practice was to find Ui in daily life, which can be checked in his Uiamseo, which introduces a way of life to find the right thing at every moment in daily life. Examples of his conduct of life approach include taking the lead in the establishment of Heunghakdang, an educational institution in the village, and the repair of Gosanjae, the village school of his family to raise the studies of the village, searching for improvement measures for Sachang by protecting the forests to save the livelihood of the village people and control commerce, and making the village people take pride in their culture by excavating actively the meanings of scenic spots in the village.
Ahn's academic spirit and conduct of life approach holds the following significance in the history of ideology: first, he proposed the study of consilience to worship Hoijae, Toigye and Nammyeong studies together to the Yeongnam School that followed only their own theories in the second half of Joseon. This academic spirit of his had enormous impacts on the local scholars of Gyeongsangwoodo later and helped them develop a new perception of worshiping Nammyeong and Toigye studies together. Secondly, his academic spirit was based on the mental training and practice of Nammyeong studies, which confirms that every aspect of Nammyeong studies was transmitted to Gyeongsangwoodo. Thirdly, he found the right things for him to practice his academic spirit in daily life and tried to realize them in the real world he faced. His approach to conduct of life represents a private man's reactions to the reality distant from the political power and helps to find the meanings of local intellectuals' social roles in the era of nobility.
