초록

인간을 위대하게 변모시키는 것은 교육이다. 본 논문은 성인이 되는 핵심 수양 방법인 ‘敬’공부의 교육적 의미와 존 로크의 『교육론』에 대한 내용을 분석하고 그 속에 담겨있는 우리의 교육목표를 지⋅덕⋅체에서 체⋅덕⋅지로 지향해야 하는 이유를 밝히는데 그 목적이 있다.
율곡 이이(李珥)는 心을 氣로 해석하며 ‘심시기(心是氣)’라 말했다. 나아가 人心과 道心 모두 氣가 발한 것임을 강조하며 ‘기발이승일도(氣發理乘一途)’로 정리하였다. ‘기발이승일도’란 인심⋅도심 두 개의 근원은 하나의 心에 있으며 실제로 발용하여 性을 드러내는 주체는 ‘기(氣)’가 된다고 한다. 만약 ‘기’가 있고 형체가 없다면 마음이 머물 곳이 없으니 허상에 불과할 것이다. 그러므로 ‘기’를 담고 있는 형체 또한 성명과 함께 결합되어 있으니 형체가 있는 모든 것은 본연지리에 순응하는 본연지기를 잘 다스려야 ‘氣’ 또한 맑고 善한 본연지기가 되므로 수양하는 대상을 氣로 설정하지 않을 수 없다고 했다.
따라서 주희의 「경재잠(敬齋箴)」과 남당의 「숙흥야매잠」은 바른 몸가짐으로 ‘氣’를 다스림으로써 바른 마음을 갖추는 ‘경(敬)’을 실천하는데 그 요지가 있다고 하겠다. 그러므로 건강한 신체를 위주로 마음을 흩어지지 않게 하나로 모으는 바른 몸가짐⋅바른 동정(動靜)을 최고 덕목으로 실천하는 ‘敬’이야 말로 모든 사기(邪氣)를 물리치는 힘이 있다고 말한다. ‘敬’을 실천한다는 것은 바른 몸가짐으로부터 덕과 지혜를 갖춘다는 체⋅덕⋅지로 교육목표를 지향한다는 것과 다름이 없다고 생각한다.
존 로크는 건강한 식습관으로 뼈를 강하게 하고 배를 튼실하게 하여 신체가 정신의 명령을 따르고 실행할 수 있도록 체력과 활력을 유지해 나간다면 세상에 나갔을 때 어떤 유혹이나 어려운 고난을 잘 극복해 나갈 수 있을 것이라 했다. 또한 건강한 신체와 함께 정신력을 배양하고 덕성과 지성을 길러 나가며 유약한 몸이 장애가 되지 않도록 하는 것이야 말로 가장 중요한 조건이 된다고 생각했다.
고대인이나 현대인이나 또한 후세의 사람들에게 막중하게 요구되는 것 중 건강만한 것은 없을 것이다. 높은 정신과 지식을 갖추고자 할수록 동시에 건강한 신체를 위해 실천해 나감이 옳을 것임은 두말할 나위가 없다. 그러므로 지식을 위주로 경쟁에 시달리는 오늘날의 어린 청소년들에게 무엇보다 중요한 것은 ‘바른 마음’을 깃들게 하는 ‘바른 몸가짐이다. 그러므로 ’敬‘공부와 『교육론』은 건강한 신체에 덕성을 겸비한 훌륭한 몸가짐을 지향하고 있는바 오늘날의 교육 시스템에 시사하는 바가 크다고 하겠다.

영어초록

It is education that makes man great. This study set out to analyze the educational meanings of "敬(respect)" study content and the content of John Locke's Some Thoughts Concerning Education and explain why the educational goals of South Korea in them should move from knowledge, morals, and body to body, morals, and knowledge.
Yulgok Lee Yi interpreted the mind as energy, saying "Simsigi." He further emphasized that both the mind of man and that of morality were the manifestation of energy, arranging them as "Gibaliseungildo," which states that the origin of the mind of man and that of morality is a single mind and that "energy" is the subject of actual Balyong and the revelation of Seong. If there is "energy" with no shape, there will be no place for the mind to stay, which means that it will be nothing but illusion. The shapes containing "energy" are combined with Seongmyeong, which means that everything in a form should govern Bonyeonjigi compliant with Bonyeonjiri so that the "energy" can be Bonyeonjigi that is clear and good. It is thus inevitable to set the object of cultivation as "energy." Zhu Xi's Gyeongjaejam and Namdang's Sukheungyamaejam argue that the main point is to practice "respect" with the right mind by governing "energy" with the right conduct. As "respect" is to practice the best virtues of the right conduct and the right Dongjeong, which is to gather the minds into one around the healthy body, it has the strength to dispel all the evil energy. The practice of "respect" is to pursue as educational goals body, morals, and knowledge, which is to cultivate virtues and wisdom based on the right conduct.
John Locke argued that if people make their bones strong and fill their stomachs with healthy eating habits and keep their physical strength and vitality for the body to follow and implement the orders of the mind, they will be able to overcome any temptations and difficult hardships in the world. He also maintained that the most important condition should be the prevention of a weak body from being an obstacle when one cultivates his or her virtues and intellect along with physical strength and mind.
Health is the most important requirement for future generations for ancient and modern people. It is the right way to practice for a healthy body when one tries to have high spirit and knowledge. The "right conduct" promoting the "right mind" is the most important for today's young adolescents suffering from knowledge-based competition. Both Zhu Xi 敬(respect)" study and John Locke's Some Thoughts Concerning Education sought after great conduct in a health body combined with virtues, thus having huge implications for the educational system today.
