초록

경복궁 근정전은 조선시대 궁궐 건축물 중에서 가장 중요한 곳으로 1860년대 중건 시 다양한 상 징을 부여했다. 특히 월대月臺에 설치된 난간석은 이때 최초로 시도된 것이었으며, 그 위에 조각된 사신四神, 십이지신十二支神, 이십팔수二十八宿는 우리나라는 물론 동아시아에서 최초의 사례이다.
근정전 난간석주에 이러한 서수상瑞獸像을 조각한 것은 천문학을 기반으로 하는 것이며, 사신, 십이지신, 이십팔수는 모두 〈천상열차분야지도〉에 나오는 성진星辰이다. 이 서수상들을 조각한 의미는 크게 두 가지로 ‘위정이덕爲政以德’과 ‘경천근민敬天勤民’이라고 할 수 있다. ‘위정이덕’은 북극성을 중심으로 여러 별들이 제자리를 지키는 모습을 군주의 덕치德治로 비유한 것이며, ‘경천근민’은 군주는 천문天文을 살피고, 백성을 위해 부지런히 하라는 뜻이다. 결국 ‘위정이덕’, ‘경천근민’은 부지런히 정사에 임하라는 근정전의 뜻과 부합한다.
이러한 서수상의 상징과 도상圖像을 월대에 구현한 것은 당시 사대부들의 천문학적 소양, 이십팔수의 동물형상이 그려진 『금석색金石索』 등 청淸의 문헌에 대한 연구에서 비롯된 것이라고 할 수 있다. 더불어 강윤姜潤, 1831~1898 등 별간역別看役의 설계, 김진성金振聲, ?~? 등 패장牌將이 석재 채취, 운송, 설치와 장성복張聖福, ?~? 등 석장石匠의 우수한 솜씨를 통해 완성되었다. 경복궁 중건의 마지막을 장식한 근정전 월대 건립은 서수상을 통해 왕도정치를 표방하고, 근정전의 이름 뜻을 되새기는 공역이었다.

영어초록

Gyeongbokgung Palace's Geunjeongjeon is regarded as one of the most signicant structures among the palace buildings of the Joseon Dynasty, having been bestowed with various symbols during its reconstruction in the mid-1860s. Particularly noteworthy is the balustrade stone installed on the Woldae(moon terrace), which was rst attempted during this period. e carved representations of the Four Guardian Deities(사신), Twelve Zodiac Animals(十二支神), and the Twenty-Eight Constellations(二十八宿) atop it marks the rst instance not only in Korea but also in East Asia.
The carving of these mythical creatures, known as Seosusang(瑞獸像), on the balustrades of Geunjeongjeon Hall is based on astronomy. e Four Guardian Deities, Twelve Zodiac Animals, and the Twenty-Eight Constellations all represent celestial beings mentioned in the Stone Constellation Chart, termed Cheonsangyeolcha bunyajido, an ancient Korean star map. The signicance behind sculpting these mythical creatures can broadly be categorized into two main principles: Wijeong Ideok(爲政以德) and Gyeongcheon Geunmin(敬天勤民). e former metaphorically represents the virtue of a ruler, likening the arrangement of stars, particularly around the North Star, to the governance of virtue. On the other hand, the latter conveys the idea that a ruler should diligently study astronomy for the benet of the people. Ultimately, Wijeong Ideok and Gyeongcheon Geunmin align with the intended meaning of Geunjeongjeon, encouraging a ruler to diligently engage in governance.
The embodiment of these symbolic and pictorial representations of mythical creatures on the Woldae (moon terrace) was derived from the astronomical knowledge of the aristocracy at that time and studies of Qing Dynasty documents such as Jinshisu(金石索) depicting animal forms of the Twenty-Eight Constellations. Additionally, the design work of the special supervisors referred to as byeolganyeok, including Kang yoon, the stone quarrying, transportation, and installation eorts led by Kim Jin-seong and other foreman (paejang), and the exceptional craftsmanship of stone masons like Jang Seong-bok all contributed to the completion of the project. e construction of the Woldae (Moon Terrace) of Geunjeongjeon Hall, marking the final phase of the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace, served as a symbolic representation of the Wangdo Jeongchi(王道政治), or the King’s Way of Governance, through the depiction of mythical creatures. It demonstrated a meaningful understanding that rearmed the essence of Geunjeongjeon’s name.
