덕의 도야와 비판적 사고 (The Education of Virtue and Critical Thinking)

초록

인간이 다른 사람과 인격적 관계를 형성하기 위해서는 도덕성으로 무장해야 할 뿐만 아니라 무엇보다 법칙에 따라 행위 할 수 있는 의지의 강한 힘을 끊임없이 유지할 수 있어야 한다. 의지의 강한 힘이 바로 칸트가 말하는 덕이며, 이 덕이야 말로 이성과 감성 사이에서 갈등하는 나약한 인간의 선택을 늘 이성의 명령 쪽으로 인도하는 근원적인 힘이다. 이는 결국 감정의 훈육을 의미하며, 이런 의미에서 칸트는 유한한 인간이 선험적 도덕법칙을 의식하지만 도덕적으로 행위 하지 않는 모습을 극복하고자 덕의 도야를 강조한다. 따라서 덕의 도야는 판단력의 훈련과 올바른 감정을 계발하는 것이다. 또한 칸트가 덕의 도야를 위해 제시한 방법은 문답법과 도덕적 교리문답법인데, 이 방법을 통해 그는 덕의 도야와 판단력의 훈련을 실천적으로 이끌어내고자 하였다.
칸트가 덕의 도야를 위해 제시한 방법은 오늘날의 비판적 사고와 같은 맥락을 취하고 있다. 사실 비판적 사고에 있어 중요한 두 요소는 판단력과 관련된 지적능력인 사고능력과 태도와 관련된 사고성향으로서, 이 두 요소가 조화를 이룰 때 진정한 비판적 사고는 실현될 수 있고, 이를 위해서는 문답을 포함한 토론이 상당히 중요한 역할을 한다. 이렇게 볼 때 칸트의 「덕론」은 비판적 사고와 상당히 밀접한 관계가 있다. 왜냐하면 칸트는 도덕적 교리문답법을 통해 사고능력(기술)으로서의 판단력의 향상과 사고성향으로서의 감정의 훈육을 위한 덕의 도야를 강조하고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 이러한 논의를 통해 칸트 윤리학에 대해 제기되는 비판, 소위 ‘형식적이거나 추상적’이라는 비판에 대해 칸트적 답변을 제시하고자 한다.

영어초록

In spite of knowing morality or moral law, humans do not necessarily behave morally despite their ability to overcome the temptation of sensibility or inclination, and then act only according to the command of reason. This is not as easy as it sounds though, thus humans should listen to the command of practical reason and try to act accordingly. In order to do so, humans must not remain only in the dimension where they only know the moral laws, they must go further to act according to them. In other words, based only on the tendency to act with good behavior, the moral laws are realized through them. At this point, the important thing is the power of will to behave well. Such power of will is a virtue. Based on virtue, humans as rational beings should reinforce the will to practice moral laws through the discipline of emotions.
This aspect of Kant's ethics is also related to critical thinking. Although the ability to think critically is excellent, if you do not have the attitude and inclination to use your thinking skills properly, it is truly difficult to achieve critical thinking practically. So as you see, of greater importance for critical thinking is not the ability of critical thinking, but the tendency of critical thinking. In other words, it's the matter of thinking attitude. Therefore, the true owners of critical thinking should have not only possess good thinking skills, but also the correct and rational tendency of critical thinking.
In conclusion, Kant's virtue and critical thinking seems to have a fairly close relationship. True moral agents are the persons that constantly try to develop the inclination to practice the moral laws. Similarly, the owners of such real critical thinking are the persons who always try to improve their practical disposition to correctly use the technique of thinking. Here, it can be seen that the will to practice the moral law is more important than the moral law itself, and the tendency of correct critical thinking is more important than the critical thinking skill itself. This means that problems related to persons are more important than the actions themselves. Therefore the criticisms that Kant's ethics is formal and abstract are only the things pointed fragmentarily, and can not be seen as a legitimate critique of Kant's ethics.
