초록

현대사회에서 슈퍼 히어로가 등장하는 영화, 드라마, 게임, 애니메이션 등은 큰 인기를 끌고 있고 관련 산업 역시 꾸준하게 성장하고 있다. 이처럼 슈퍼 히어로가 하나의 문화현상이자 문화산업으로 급부상한 현실에서, 이 글은 슈퍼 히어로의 이면을 파헤친 미드 <더 보이즈>의 특이성에 주목하였다.
이 작품에서 그려지는 슈퍼 히어로의 이면은 일차적으로는 인간 내면의 부정적인 모습이다. 정의를 수호하는 슈퍼 히어로에게도 인간으로서의 나약함, 비겁함, 저열함, 잔혹함 등이 존재함을 보여줌으로써 그들의 내면이 보통의 사람들과 다르지 않음을 보여준다. 나아가 슈퍼 히어로의 이면은 현실사회의 문제와 관련된다. 정치, 군사, 인종, 성별, 범죄 등 실제 현실에서 벌어지는 사회문제가 환유되는 것이다. 이를 통해 역사적, 종교적, 문화적으로 형성된 아메리카니즘의 부실한 실체가 폭로된다. 이처럼 <더 보이즈>는 슈퍼 히어로의 이면을 파헤침으로써 인간의 내면과 사회의 정체성을 비판적으로 되돌아보게 한다.
한편 이 작품에서 슈퍼 히어로는 왜곡된 부모의 욕망과 이들을 상품화하는 매스컴, 그리고 잘못된 사회화에 의해 만들어지는 존재들이다. 즉 슈퍼 히어로는 자신의 욕망을 충족시켜줄 존재, 혹은 문제를 대신 해결해줄 존재로서 대중에 의해 호출된다. 타락한 대중으로 인해 추악한 내면을 지닌 괴물이 슈퍼 히어로로서 존재하게 되는 것이다. 이처럼 슈퍼 히어로를 대중의 욕망 측면에서 재해석한 <더 보이즈>는 슈퍼 히어로의 전성시대인 현대사회에 대해서도 반성적 성찰을 가능케 한다는 의의가 있다.
대부분의 슈퍼 히어로물에서 그들은 선하고 정의로운 존재로 재현된다. 이와 다르게 슈퍼 히어로의 이면을 폭로하고 그 속에 담긴 대중의 욕망을 비판한 <더 보이즈>는 현실세계에 대한 많은 시사점을 남긴다. 우리가 사는 현실세계에서도 분야를 막론해 다양한 사람들이 영웅으로 추앙받곤 한다. 그러한 영웅화가 문제의 근본적인 해결에는 도움이 되지 않는, 그저 힘든 현실을 망각하기 위해 상상된 타개책은 아닌지 다시금 돌아볼 필요가 있다.

영어초록

In today's modern society, movies, dramas, games, and animation works featuring superheroes are in their popularity with the concerned industries growing day by day. In cultural industries where superheroes emerged as a new cultural phenomenon, this study focused on the special features of <The Boys>, an American drama series that expressed the hidden side of superheroes.
This drama series first expressed negative aspects inside human beings to depict the hidden side of superheroes. It shows that even superheroes defending justice are weak, cowardly, base or cruel as human beings, demonstrating that their insides are not different from those of common people. The hidden side of superheroes is also connected to issues of real society. They are a metonymy to social issues in the actual reality including politics, military, race, gender, and crimes, disclosing the weak truth of Americanism formed historically, religiously, and culturally. <The Boys> expressed the hidden side of superheroes, making viewers look back on the inner side of human beings and the identity of society critically.
In this drama series, superheroes are made by their parents' distorted desire, the mass media commercializing them, and also wrong socialization. In other words, superheroes are asked for by the public to fulfill their desire or solve their issues for them. Monsters that have gotten an ugly inside due to the corrupt public exist as superheroes in the society. Reinterpreting superheroes in the aspect of the public's desire, <The Boys> is significant in that it encourages reflective thinking about the today’s modern society as the golden age of superheroes.
Most works featuring superheroes express them as good and just characters. Unlike them, <The Boys> discloses the hidden side of superheroes and criticizes the public's desire reflected in them, thus leaving many implications for the real society. In real society, various people are revered as heroes regardless of fields. Raises a need to look back and have contemplation on whether such heroization is merely an imaginary solution that is not helpful for the fundamental solution of issues and just works to make people forget about their harsh reality.
