초록

갤러리스트로 시작하여, 실험 영화, 사진, 비디오, 에세이, 공연, 건축 등 여러 분야에서 활동했던 댄 그레이엄(Dan Graham, 1942-)은 반사 소재인 유리와 거울에 관심을 갖는다. 1978년에 <파빌리온/조각(Pavilion/Sculpture)> 시리즈를 설계하고1 978년에서 1981년까지 미국의 아르곤 국제 연구소(Laboratoire National, Argonne)에 <아르곤을 위한 파빌리온/조각(Pavilion/Sculpture for Argonne)> 작품을, 1984년 스톡홀름 현대 미술관(Moderna Museet)에 <파빌리온/조각II (Pavilion/Sculpture II)> 작품을, 그리고2003년 네덜란드 바스나르 (Wassenaar)에 <욥을 위한 파빌리온/조각(Pavilion/Sculpture for Joop)> 작품을 설치하였다. 단순한 구조를 가진 세개의 <파빌리온/조각(Pavilion/Sculpture)> 작품은 반사 소재들을 사용하여 우리에게 무형의 비움을 제시한다. 유리 벽의 투명성은 내, 외부 공간, 현실 공간과 비현실 공간, 보는 사람과 비춰지는 사람의 공간, 등, 다양한 공간을 제시한다. 유리 벽은 또한 처리 방법이나, 빛, 시야의 각도에 의해 외부 이미지를 거울처럼 반사한다. 반사 물체는 빈 공간이나 가득 찬 공간, 물질적 공간이나 비물질적 공간을 제시한다. <파빌리온/조각(Pavilion/Sculpture)>에서, 반사 소재인 유리와 거울은 어떤 역활을 하며, 열린 구조로 된 파빌리온의 빈 공간은 어떤 의미를 갖는가? 빈-열린 공간과, 유리와 거울 벽 “사이”에 비워진 공간은 동양의 비움과 어떤 관계성이 있을까? 열려진 구조 사이와 시공간의 의미를 갖고 있는 한자 “사이 간(間)”과 일본 건축가 이소자키 아라타(Isozaki Arata)가 확립한 “마 (Ma, 間)”의 개념과의 연관성은 무엇인가? 거울 자체는 비어있지만, 거울은 반사로 가득해 보인다. <파빌리온/조각> 안에서 보이는 공간과 보이지 않는 공간, 실제 공간과 허구적(반사) 공간이 공존한다. 그 공간들은 동양의 여러 가지 비움의 의미들, 특히 노자(老子)의 무(無)와 불교의 공(空), 완공(完空)과 진공(眞空)과의 상관관계를 가진다.

Dan Graham (1942-), started as a gallerist and worked in a variety of fields such as experimental films, photography, video, essays, performances and architecture. He is interested in reflective object as glass and mirrors. He designed Pavilion / Sculpture series in 1978 and installe Pavilion / Sculpture for Argonne in the Laboratoire National, Argonne, USA from 1978 to 1981. Pavilion / Sculpture II in the Moderna Museet in 1984 and Pavilion / Sculpture for Joop in Wassenaar, The Netherlands, in 2003. Three similar Pavilion / Sculpture with a simple structure use reflective materials to present us with intangible emptiness. Transparency of the glass wall presents various spaces such as inner space, outer space, real space and unreal space, and space of viewer and visible space. According to the processing method, the glass reflects the external image like a mirror depending on the angle of light or on the angle of view.
Reflective objects present empty space or full space, material space or immaterial space. In Pavilion / Sculpture, which role does the reflecting material as glass and mirror? What does the empty space of the open pavilion mean? What is the meaning of the emptiness of the Far East, the empty space between the open space and the glass and the mirror wall? What is the relation between the empty - open space and the space emptied in between the glass and the mirror wall to the emptiness of the Orient? What is the connection between the open structure and the term korean gan “간(間, inter-space)” with space-time semantics and the notion of “Ma (間)”, established by Japanese architect Isozaki Arata? The mirror itself is empty, but the mirror is full by reflections. In Pavilion / Sculpture, visible space and invisible space, real space and fictional (reflective) space coexist. I examine what is the correlation between these spaces and the meanings of various emptiness of the Far East, , in particular, mu 무(無, non-being) of Laozi (老子) and the emptiness of Buddhism; the completion emptiness (wangong 완공, 完空) and the real emptiness (jingong진공, 眞空).
