미니멀리즘 순수성 연구 -댄 플래빈 작품의 순수성 중심으로- (A Purity Study of Minimalism -focusing on the purity of Dan Flavin's works-)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 미니멀리즘의 작품은 작가에게 종속되지 않고 순수한 사물 자체가 가지는 독자성으로 존재하며, 관람자가 작품과 마주한 상황에서 경험하는 즉각적 인식에 의미를 부여한다. 미니멀리즘의 비평과 미니멀리즘이 가지고 있는 순수성-사물의 순수성, 작가와 비관계로서의 순수성, 현전의 순수성 연구를 통해 작가의 개념이 부재하여 어떤 의미도 없이 존재하는 미니멀리즘 작품이 가지고 있는 미술의 확장성을 알 수 있다. (연구방법) 미니멀리즘과 관련된 이론적 비평 연구를 통해 모더니즘 회화와 미니멀리즘의 차이, 조각의 확장과 장소성, 미니멀리즘이 현대 미술에 미친 영향을 살펴본다. 댄 플래빈의 제안(proposal)으로서의 순수성을 연구하여 구체적인 순수성을 제시하고 각 항에 맞는 사례를 살펴본다. 마지막 장에서는 논의된 내용을 정리하여 댄 플래빈의 제안(proposal)으로서의 순수성 연구의 의의를 정리한다. 연구범위는 미니멀리즘에 포함되는 작가의 작품과 댄 플래빈의 작품으로 순수성을 제시하며 논의되는 순수성은 미니멀리즘의 작품 범위로 한정한다. (결과) 작품 분석의 결과 댄 플래빈 작품이 가지고 있는 순수성은 미니멀리즘의 특성, 순수성과 관련되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 미니멀리즘 특성 중에서 익명성, 사물성, 비인간성은 댄 플래빈의 모든 작품에서 표출되었다. 빛과 색의 도구로서의 순수성, 현전의 순수성(관람자와의 관계)이 강한 작품은 미니멀리즘의 특성인 현전성과 공간성이 모두 표출된다. (결론) 본 연구를 통해 미니멀리즘과 미니멀리즘 대표 작가인 댄 플래빈 작품 분석에서 나타나는 미니멀리즘의 특성과 미니멀리즘의 순수성과의 관계를 알 수 있었고 미니멀리즘의 순수성이 미니멀리즘 순수성의 특성 방식으로 미니멀리즘 작품과 댄 플래빈 작품에서 표출됨을 알 수 있었다. 미니멀리즘의 현전의 순수성은 사물의 유용성을 상실한 사물이 어떻게 공간으로의 확장, 장소 특정성을 가지게 되는 지를 보여주며 미술이 장소와 유기적 관계를 맺고 건축의 영역으로까지 확장되는데 영향을 준다. 본 연구는 미니멀리즘 작품에 내재되어 있는 순수성과 댄 플래빈의 제안(proposal)의 순수성을 제시함에 의의를 갖으며 작가-예술의 제안-에게서 관람자-예술의 완성-에게 전이되어 나타나는 미니멀리즘의 순수성에 대해 논의할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Minimalist work is not dependent on its artist and exists as the identity of pure object itself, giving meaning to the instant perception experienced by viewers. Through study of minimalism criticism and the purity of minimalism - a purity of things, nonrelational purity, and a purity of presence – one can see the anonymity, succession, and fine artistic expandability of a minimalist work that exists with no meaning due to the absence of artist concept. (Method) In this study, we examine the difference between modernist painting and minimalism, the expansion and locality of sculpture, and the influence of minimalism on contemporary art based on a theoretical critique of minimalism. We investigated purity as elucidated in a “proposal” from artist Dan Flavin, presented specific purity, and examined the cases matching each section. The final chapter of our study summarizes discussion and presents a summary of the implications of our study on purity as proposed by Dan Flavin. This study also presents the work of artists who fall under the category of minimalism and exhibit purity in the vein of the works of Dan Flavin. Purity as discussed in this study is confined in scope to works of minimalism. (Results) The results of this analysis suggest that purity in the minimalism of Dan Flavin exhibits such characteristics of minimalism as anonymity, thingness, and inhumanity. The works use light and color to strongly express purity, and the purity of presence (relationship with the viewers) expresses the present and spatiality together, which are further characteristics of minimalism. (Conclusions) The results of this study show the relationship between the characteristics of minimalism and minimalistic purity found through analyses of minimalism in the works of Dan Flavin, one of the most prominent minimalist artists. Minimalistic purity was found to embody the composition perceived by viewers as a pure object not embedded with symbols and signs, breaking the link with modernism. In particular, the purity of presence in minimalism shows how objects that lost their usability have both spatial expandability and specificity of location and how fine art forms an organic relationship with place and expands into the realm of architecture. This study has significance for its presentation of purity inherent in minimalist work and the purity of Dan Flavin's proposal. I hope that this study will create an opportunity to further examine the purity of minimalism, one that shifts the emphasis in a work of art from the artist (proposal of art) to viewers (contemplation of art).
