미륵사지 출토 백제시대 암막새 연구 (A Study on Concave Tiles of the Baekje Kingdom Era Excavated at the Mireuk Temple Site)

초록

미륵사지는 발굴조사에서 다양한 암막새가 사용되었음이 확인되었는데, 그 중 삼릉심엽형 문양요소가 있는 A형식은 백제시대에 제작된 것이라고 생각한다. 이 형식은 사역 중심곽에서는 출토되지않고 연못지를 포함하는 주변, 특히 북측구릉에서 집중 출토되었다. 이는 통일신라시대에 사역을 확장하는 과정에서 미륵사지 중심곽의 창건에 사용했던 기와를 폐기한 층이다. 이 층에서 통일신라시대의 유물은 거의 보이지 않고 역시 미륵사지 창건기와인 6엽단판연화문수막새와 인각명문와, 녹유연목와 등이 공반되고 있다.
문양요소에 있어서도 A형식 암막새에서 나타나는 삼릉심엽문은 미륵사지 서탑출토 금동제사리외호의 문양과 유사하며, 왕궁리 오층석탑 출토 금제사리내합에서 나타나는 문양과 거의 일치한다. 뿐만 아니라 공반된 수막새나 녹유연목와에 나타나는 간단한 심엽문도 사리장엄구의 문양과 동일한 형태를 보인다.
드림새와 접합된 암키와에서는 원통와통을 사용하고 있으며, 등문양·태토 등에서 백제 기와와는 이질감이 보인다. 그러나 백제시대에는 이미 원통와통을 사용하고 있으며, 비슷한 시기 수막새 등문양에서 이미 변화의 조짐을 보이고 있다.
위와 같이 출토층위와 공반유물 문양요소, 접합 암키와의 검토를 통해 보았을 때 미륵사지에서는 백제시대 최초로 드림새에 문양이 있는 암막새를 창안 사용한 것임을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

The findings from excavation of the Mireuk Temple site confirmed that a good variety of concave tiles were used. Among those, A-type ones are believed to have been manufactured during the era of the Baekje Kingdom. A-type tiles have been unearthed not in the central area of the temple but mostly in its outer circles including the lake, particularly on its northern slope in a mass. This area belongs to the stratum where the tiles used at the foundation of Mireuk Temple were scrapped in the wake of expansion of the temple compound during the age of the Unified Silla Kingdom. However, few remains from the Unified Silla Kingdom era are seen here except for convex tiles with 6-leaf univalve lotus design together with stamped-roof tiles as well as green-glazed tiles at the edge of eaves that were used at thefoundation of Mireuk Temple.
In terms of designs, the three-pronged heart-shape leaf found among A-type concave tiles is similar to that found in the outer Sarira Containers made of gold-plated copper excavated at the site of the western pagoda of Mireuk Temple and almost identical with the pattern seen from the gold-lidded vessel for Sarira unearthed at the five-story pagoda site of Wanggung-ri. They showed the same pattern with the simple heart-shaped pattern of the convex tiles and green-glazed tiles unearthed together at the site.
Some clues of difference from the tiles of the Baekje era are found in the concave tiles connected with the roof end in that circular frame for tiles, lantern-type patterns and base soil are used. It must, however,be noted that circular frames had already been used in the Baekje Kingdom era and started to reveal signs of change in the lantern design of convex tiles during the similar period. Some sort of heterogeneity may only be attributed to different manufacturing location or different manufacturer.
From the above review of the stratum of excavation, pattern elements and connected concave tiles excavated from the Mireuk Temple site, it becomes known that concave tiles with patterns at the edge of eaves were invented and used for the first time in the Baekje Kingdom era.
